Absolutely excellent! I hire contractors all the time for my clients when we need to perform repairs after a house has been sold and inspected. The Enoch guys communicated very well, we're on time, and got the repairs done very quickly, but beyond that the price was overly fair and really saved my clients money since they knew what they were doing and exactly what the problems were . Highly recommended !

We paid another company to supposedly fix our unit, they were just scammers. Then we called A Team. They came out and were efficient and were dedicated to resolving the issue. They followed up with us and even came back to verify things were taken care of properly. They stayed true to their pricing and have the tools to diagnose and resolve the issue. They had to fix what the previous guys messed up and then found the solution to the original problem. I glad we contacted them because other wise our system would have been ruined from the first contractors. A Team is a legitimate company with legitimate technicians out there serving honestly and actually fixing things, unlike others who only try to sell new units! Thanks A team! I will use them again in the future, no doubt about that.

I had a problem with my air conditioning late on a Friday night and reached out on here. I got a reply within minutes and was able to get someone out to my house that night. Unfortunately, I still was having some problems on Saturday morning but Shawn was very quick to respond to my message and immediately came back over to finish fixing the problem, without charging me anything additional. Not only did Shawn just fix the problem, he walked me through everything he was doing step by step and explained what he was doing and why. The prices were very fair but the professionalism was top notch. Will definitely use this company again with any future HVAC problems.

They did a great job. Were very professional, fixed the hole where I had a plumbing leak repaired and a long crack in my ceiling. I could not even get other contractors to return my class, but Rosalio Gamez promptly returned my call and did a great job. I would highly recommend him!

Jorge came out to our home, a 1950's duplex conversation that is in the process of a gut remodel. He took his time, walked the rooms, and the outer perimeter asking questions on where we liked items placed, our needs and any concerns. The home never had HVAC, it was a window unit and space heater nightmare so this was always going to be a big job. Jorge and his team arrived early, on schedule and walked the rooms again making sure everyone know the exact game plan. We had a giant heavy attic fan that they removed, and did not charge us a penny to do so! That took about 45 minutes labor for 3 people, good job. We had a 4 Ton unit, 9 vents, electrical lines run all in the same day. I told the team don't worry too much about making a mess since the walls are getting knocked down in a couple of days but they insisted in cleaning up. The pricing is what shocked us the most. Me and my wife feel not only did we get a good deal, but we kind of robbed them. Not only was the price amazing but this install was right at the start of summer where HVAC installers are in demand and tend to hike up the prices.. Not this company! We got 5 quotes, and Jorge was easily the lowest, by several thousand on a couple! All components used were high quality. Jorge even texted me the next day to make sure everything was ok and to offer some ideas to pass to our contractors. I will be using Jorge for our maintenance and other projects we have and will absolutely recommend his services without hesitation.

David (8:22) was prompt, courteous and reliable. The best thing about this particular job was, on Saturday about 5:00 pm, he was ready to make the service call. However, we were not going to be home until late Saturday night, so he offered to come at 7:00am Sunday morning! He arrived at 7:00 and immediately diagnosed the problem. A very reasonable $65 diagnostic fee. As an extra bonus, the part he replaced is likely under warranty, so he called to let me know he would probably be refunding some or all of the charge for the part. Please give David a call if you need any HVAC work. You won't be sorry.

I have worked with three different contractors on various projects over the past four months...this gentleman (Josh) was a pleasure to work with and I will be calling him again for additional services. He reviewed the area of concern on a Sunday, gave me a quote and had the job finished in less than 3 hours at the price he quoted.

I like Jon because he came with the intention of not forcing me to change my system but to repair it. BUT I THINK IT WAS TIME. I had few contractors coming and giving me estimates and to be honest he seems more reliable. The work was fast and the system worked after few hours of install. So far no problem so im happy

Cool Tech was definitely the best mix of expertise, price and customer service out of the 5 HVAC contractors I had bid our house. They had the best price and a common sense approach on what options were worth paying for and which ones were not. They were the only group to provide a detailed engineered report on the unique HVAC aspects of my home. Once installed, there was a minor issue that occurred overnight. They came back first thing the next day and corrected it. First rate group all the way around.

I'm very grateful for Cobb's heating and AC. Larry was responsive to my family's needs, very professional, and what I appreciate the most is that it actually mattered to him that my family and I had been suffering in this heat. He was determined to help my family feel comfortable in our home once again. Larry responded fast, he arrived when he said he would, and he actually fixed my air problem. I made the mistake of choosing Universal Contractors when my AC first stopped working, and was unfortunately scammed out of $350. I learned my lesson and will now choose Cobb's heating and AC for all my HVAC needs from now on.

Green Attics did a number of small repairs (sealing up doors and the HVAC upflow) before blowing in insulation in my attic to R49. The technicians came on the scheduled day and seem to have done a fine job, though it's hard to know for sure without climbing up there myself. They mostly cleaned up after themselves, but not completely. The estimate for the insulation alone was a little cheaper than other bids, and it was nice to have a company that was willing to do the minor repairs too--so the whole house would be more efficient. My only issue was that on two occasions, Russ didn't call me back and left me waiting for days each time. The first was when I called to say OK to the bid--he didn't call me back!--and the second was when I emailed him to get a final price for the job (the guy who visited my house and did the original estimate had made a mistake in adding up the numbers). Russ did eventually come through with a fair price on the combo of insulation and repairs. I just wish he had been more responsive throughout the process. Still, I'd recommend Green Attics and even hire them again!

I had completely lost faith in hiring out any help when it comes to remodeling this condo I just bought a couple months ago. Learning as I go along I started stumbling when I tried tiling my shower. Found out about thumbtack from a friend and it linked me up with Jose and his crew. Nice group of guys, that showed up at 7 am for 3 days straight until the my shower was tiled and complete. I had 2 nightmare remodeling experiences prior to this and Jose saved the day and made my week. Shower looks great. Will hire again without hesitation on my next bathroom in a couple months. Thanks for showing me there are dependable and reasonably priced contractors out there. Do yourself and hire them! They work hard and do things right. No cutting corners.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
