The menu Karen created for our back yard party was fabulous. Everyone loved the chicken and steak fajitas prepared on the grill. The lime cilantro rice was a nice change from the standard Spanish rice. Everything on the menu was made fresh!

Holiday Sit-down dinner for 14. Prime rib, shrimp cocktail, tossed salad, twice baked potatoes, green beans with silvered almonds, rolls and mini strawberry shortcake. Food was delicious, a little slow as to not being accustomed to my kitchen, not knowing where things were and not asking but with this large of dinner party it was hard for caterers to get my attention. Caterers only big problem was not leaving early enough (after we discussed it) to get through the extremely heavy traffic and arrive on time which threw dinner off from scheduled time. Since everyone attending were friends, it just worked out that we had more time to talk but it caused the caterers to cook and reheat dinner items because they had gotten cold waiting in traffic getting here. It ended up working out well, a good time was had by one and all and as I early mentioned, the food was delicious- far above what we had expected. We will highly recommend Lunas catering and also will use them again in any future catering needs.

Laura was such a fantastic help with planning my mother's birthday party! It was a party of about 40 guests at my home. Laura gave wonderful recommendations on food choices based on what I had told her about my mom. She arrived early to set up a wonderful spread of food. I loved how something new seemed to come out every 20 minutes or so. It kept guests going back for more. We received so many compliments on the food and on Laura's service. I cannot think of one thing for Laura to improve on! We will definitely be using her again in the future. Lindsey, Round Rock

If you are looking for the PERFECT caterer for a dinner party in your home, Kniseley Catered is for you. We used this company to serve a buffet style dinner for a professional office party during the Christmas holiday season. From start to finish Robert and his crew were supportive, attentive and a true pleasure. The menu was customized for our guests. The food was excellent. The cost was extremely reasonable. They even did the dishes!

I had a birthday party for my wife with 80+ guests. Goodies & Bits provided 3 different Paella dishes, a Spanish salad and 4 different appetizers. The food could not have been better and my guests raved about the fare. Five of their people worked the party. They were well dressed, professional and accommodating. Marvin and Estella are a joy to work with. I look forward to using them again at a future event.

Bon is my go-to caterer, period. She has catered an annual party for 60+ people for the last 3 years. She also did a more intimate gathering for a sit-down dinner for 20. I have also sampled her personal chef work through a friend. Regardless of the size of the event, Bon creates delicious, beautiful food, and she and her team are the height of professionalism. To top it all off, they do an amazing clean-up job! Working with Bon is easy and so enjoyable. You will be thrilled with her work!

Absolutely amazing!!!!! She arrived very promptly and set up very quietly! I barely even noticed she was here. The food not only tasted amazing, but it had a very beautiful presentation. She was in contact with me constantly while building the menu and gave me amazing recommendations. We used lyndie for an office party of about 40 people, but I would also use her for a glamorous wedding of a couple hundred. She went above and beyond setting up a beautiful buffet style meal. I have not stopped hearing complements from my colleagues about how amazing the meal was. Definitely priced economically compared to competitors which is always a plus. We had an incredible assortment of cheeses along with her tostada chicken bites, our entree was the aji de gallina(to die for), with some rice and green beans on the side, dessert was chocolate bites and shortcake berry trifle. Could not have asked for a better all around experience

David was "GREAT" at our catered boat party. 150 people-NO PROBLEM. On time! Pork Ribs fallin off the bone, Brisket-Fork Tender, Chicken-not dry, Fish was great smoked and the Pastrami (which is new) really had me going. The way it was cooked and then the smoke-I've never had anything like it. We will always look to David first for our party!

I found Chef Heath for my small, festive dinner party - 9 people. I chose food drop off, and it was delivered punctually to a home in Barton Hills in spite of gridlocked Trail of Lights traffic. Our appetizer was a delicious hummus with bright, crisp crudités. The rib roast was perfectly cooked and seasoned, succulent and juicy. The tiny roasted potatoes and herbed green beans were al dente and subtle. Dessert was a tart sweet raspberry pie. Everything was gluten and lactose free and was easy to put into our dishes and serve family style at the table. The extremely reasonable price included delivery, and my friends couldn't stop talking about how good everything was!

Chef Lee catered my son's nautical themed 1st birthday party. The food was a hit with both the kiddos (which is a difficult thing to do with toddlers) and the adults. Most importantly, I didn't have to lift a finger to do anything regarding setup or serving! A true professional & talented Chef!

Eric and his whole operation is stellar. I hosted a birthday party with 50 guests. From the start through the finish, Eric was the perfect person to work with. Because of the weather, I had to throw some changes at him - the response was always, "No problem, We'll make it happen." On top of that, the food is excellent. Guests all night kept commenting on how great the food was. When you are doing an event, you need someone who can give you top quality food, and be a great person to work with. Eric is that person. He will be first on my list to call for future events, and I would recommend him to anyone I know.

I had a party planned and my caterers canceled last min. I found a flyer for Uncle Knock's and decided to call. They understood what I wanted and what I needed and surpassed my expectations for the party. My guest were blown away by the food and friendly service. You feel as if you have known them for years!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
