Bender construction rescued our 1918 dinosaur of a home with a complete remodel from the foundation to the plumbing ,electrical, A/C , all our bathrooms they completed with an artistic eye for detail. There designer pulled out the stops and we gave them full rein. They worked diligently to make the 11 week opening of our new home. We couldn't be more thrilled to see that they stayed true to the original look but with a modern version of it. We wanted a period correct theme but more of an open floor concept with big beams and lots of light.they pulled it off and rarely do I see my wife cry.. They did more than we could've hoped for and kati, my wife was crying with joy after seeing the finished product. Profection is what they built with surgical precision, the mastercraftmen Bear. These men worked together like a well oiled machine and even though we made changes daily, they didn't bat an eye. We saw their men jock and laugh as they'd lift one another up working nonstop. We would and plan to work with thos team again ssf soon to build our outside kitchen. Thanks to Blake and his team we have finally got our dream home complete. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you and so you can pay the best price.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Tim was very easy to work with. He is a man of his word. Great at communicating his plans. I’m very pleased with my porch remodel. The cedar posts look great! I would hire him again.

Joe and the team did a great job on our porch build. The price was fair and they continued to work with us throughout the end of the project to ensure we are getting an end result we were happy with. We would certainly hire them again.

Great all around experience. Easy to work with, made sure everything that we wanted was completed to our satisfaction, and gave us great recommendations based on their experience. The final projects (back screened porch and small front deck) turned out great, even better than we initially hoped for. Would absolutely recommend and use again

I can't rave enough about the work Nick, Steve and Ethan did for us in screening in our porch. It has now completed what was missing from our house and I couldn't be happier. Their attention to detail is something you rarely see these days. Not only was the work they did outstanding, but they are the most genuine guys who care about their customers. They have a life long customer in me. These guys deserve your work, you won't regret it.

Bud was amazing. I decided a week before my daughter's first birthday I wanted a deck built to expand our existing porch. I talked with a few different contractors and we decided to go with bud and I do not regret it. He is very honest and hard-working. He and his coworker were outside by 7 a.m. every morning to ensure that my deck was complete in time for her birthday party. He takes great care of his clients, even sending back some of the cedar purchased and exchanging it to make sure that we only had the best (no cracks or scaring). I highly recommend bud and will use him for any future projects.
