I first met Jose when I hired him as a furniture assembler. He came to my office assembled 2 office furnitures which was very difficult. Took him about 6hrs. Did a great job with a great price. I then hired Jose again with his partner Alberto to assemble a pergola from Sams Club, very huge project which they completed in a day, they also had time to assemble my basketball court. Again great job. I will have another review for Jose and his partner Alberto because they did renovations with my living room. I must have hire Jose over 10 times in a 6 month period

Within an hour of posting, Rene reached out and set up a same day walk through. 30 minute after the walkthrough I had a rough estimate. I had a contract in hand the next morning and him and his team showed up 2 hours later. They are the most efficient, polite and professional renovation/construction company I have dealt with. We are about half way through the project and so far it has been going smooth.

Felipe and Jacob were very professional, always on time, and completed the project in a timely manner. They were tasked with fixing our 1 yr old frameless leaky shower and true to his word, it no longer leaks! His team had to tear the entire shower down to the wood frame and rebuild from scratch. I'd highly recommend Felipe and his team to anyone looking for a small to large bathroom renovation. The estimate received was fairly priced compared to the others we received. Thanks, Felipe! You have happy customers here!!

True Touch finished installing our tongue and groove ceiling two days ago and we still can't stop looking at it! Billy went above and beyond for us in every conceivable way: within 24 hours of putting in the Thumbtack request they were on site to confirm their bid, stuck to the original agreed upon price (which was very affordable), made three different trips with us to pick out the wood for the project, showed up on time for all appointments, finished the work in the originally estimated time, and did an amazing job on the work itself! He's also just an all-around nice dude, and was happy to talk with us and give advice about our plans for future renovations. We will absolutely be using Billy again in the future; we could not recommend him more highly.

After contacting several contractors and spending hours figuring out who to use for various remodeling around my home it became exhausting. The last quote I recieved was from Steven from LMP. After all the quotes I heard exactly how the job would get done from various contractors. Steven not only was very responsive but also he was very punctual, and very descriptive. I heard everything I needed to hear to have total confidence that Steven would be the best person for the job. Now after the job has been done I am extremely pleased and so glad that I picked LMP. Even my neighbors came to look at the work and now two of my neighbors are going in with me to have Steven redo our fence as well. Best decision I ever made, thank you Steven and LMP!

Ken Mackey, MD Contracting, did a fabulous job on a large project to do multiple repairs and renovations in preparation for selling my house. He had been recommended by my next door neighbor. I chose to work with Ken after seeing his beautiful work in her home (especially her master bathroom) and after getting a very reasonable quote from him! My project included a total tear-out and rebuild of a Jack&Jill kids' bathroom, a beautiful walk-in shower expansion in the master bathroom, and a refresh of all the upstairs surfaces plus a downstairs laundry room. Ken listened to what I needed, helped me make a plan within budget, and followed through on every detail until I was satisfied. He is dedicated to doing things right. Thank you, Ken, for making all the details of my house shine!

The replaced a fence for us. 6' Cedar picket with steel post. We were very satisfied with the quality of work. They dug the post 30 inches to ensure we would not ever have an issue with the fence leaning. This was our issue for a fence we replaced 5 years ago. We have some other renovations we are going to hire them for.

It is a different approach, but great Project Manager that walk me thru the process and got a 3D of the what I want before actually building it. Now I am almost done with our home renovation, had a few changes along the way but Bamboo did not charge any Change Order just actual labor hours. Which is great because had quite a few and they where easy to talk to. Another thing they strive themselves with there pay as you go policy, which is really great, no lock in.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
