Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

Brandon did an excellent job of efficiently replacing the ugly chandelier in our dining room with the ceiling fan/light combo we had purchased, for a great price! We will definitely use him again for future projects.

Diamond in the rough as far as contractors go! If you need it done, this couple is the one to do it! They're the only company that gave me an estimate and constantly checked up with me and in the end, they stuck to the price estimated even though I asked for a few more things in addition to what was originally quoted. I know the job was more of a pain than they took into account before checking out what needed to be done but the price never changed. This is a true, genuine, honest, (pretty awesome if I must say myself) couple that work together to make their customers happy! I inquired about a few doors and ended up with 4 beautiful doors with new knobs, a hung mirror and a fixed chair and I couldn't be happier! We also found out we know some of the same people!! So glad we found them! Thanks Maury and Melissa!!

My husband stepped through our ceiling from the attic and we had a nice sized hole that needed repairing. Manuel was the only one to respond with a quote on Thumbtack and although I thought he was a bit pricey at the time, I agreed. Manuel arrived ON TIME and was very professional. I cannot stress enough how surprised I was given that contractors recently think the arrival time is a suggestion and not an agreement. I was immediately impressed. The second thing that impressed me was that Manuel and his assistant laid down thick butcher paper to protect my floors, and plastic to ensure that drywall dust didn't end up in other parts of the house. He also vacuumed and cleaned the floors when he left. The job took over 3 hours, so I no longer thought the original quote was expensive given the job and the impressive detail to quality. I would definitely hire him again.

I have used Fixed before for previous issues so I wanted to give them a call again when I needed electrical work done in my house. Fixed came out and installed two light fixtures and a dimmer switch in my dining room. They were prompt, professional and friendly. Their work was quick and great! Wonderful experience and I would recommend them to anyone.

Fina Ross guided us through a major remodel of our master bath, giving us the unique, old world style retreat that we always wanted. We love it every day. We have even had visitors who come back to our house with friends just to show them our bathroom. Other contractors lacked the vision, creativity, artistry and know how help us, and Fina Ross stood out right away as a contractor willing to go the extra mile and bring ingenuity, craftsmanship, and cost-consciousness to a big project. She spent hours walking us through choices and drawing sketches until we had exactly the look we wanted. She wraps design skills into every step of her projects at no extra charge, and that alone puts her head and shoulders above the rest. Additionally, she is relentlessly committed to customer satisfaction. She took every one of our phone calls, responded ot all emails, made herself available for meetings at any time that was convenient for us, AND applied the same level of service to the few minor issues we had after the job was finished and after she and been fully paid.

Jim removed a load bearing wall between the kitchen and living room leaving a load bearing post, opening up the house. He was very prompt and professional. He finished on schedule and cleaned up everything before he left. The end result was exactly what I expected from a professional handyman.

Galactic did a great, professional job on our remodel. They installed new windows, framing, Sheetrock, exterior hardy replacement and painted the home inside and out. They even stepped in and fixed some poor work we had another contractor do. They are the real deal.

After this experience, I wouldn’t hire anyone else! Geronimo was a true professional, payed attention to detail, thorough, and even made sure his subcontractors did work that was up to his company’s high standards. He even took on the job of painting our house when his guy didn’t show up. Talk about service!! Also, he is very easy to work with and knows how to communicate to understand what the customer needs. All the work was done in a FLASH!! If you need A+ roofing or general contractor help in Austin/Round Rock, look no further!

Marcos painted one room in our house. He was very prompt with his communication and very gracious when we cancelled the first time and set up a new time. He did a good job with the room and even did extra coats since the paint was lighter than we anticipated. After he finished he very quickly cleaned up and even helped us to get rid of some old furniture since we have a small car. I would hire him again if we need another room painted.

I was very satisfied with the Onyx shower and vanity installation in two bathrooms. My rating and hiring of Felipe was based on pictures of installation of other showers that he had done. Secondly, that not many contractors are versed with the installation of this type of material. Lastly, the tile and paint work that was done was to my satisfaction. The only problem encountered was the delay in getting sheetrock workers for work that had to be done prior to starting the job.

He was timely and was professional. The piece is structurally sound, build out of quality natural untreated product, which is super important when building a encloser for an Iguana or any critter. He made a wonderful effort to have the piece go with the other wood in the kitchen, cabinets (the encloser sits in what would be the kitchen nook). His pricing for such a specialized piece was great! Custom pieces that one could order from one of the online custom encloser stores start at what he charged me for the entire piece and his is much more substantial and structurally sound (for my Iguana that can get up to 15 pounds that is super important). I also loved the fact that he went through the extra effort to make sure the her encloser is super moisture proof. With exotics that have to have a steamer running in their enclosers twice at day, moisture proofing is a big deal. He also built a additional matching sleeping box for her. The only two issues were the miss judging on if the encloser could be brought into the house in one piece or as two pieces (I thought he was going to bring the encloser in pre-cut pieces and assemble it one site.) Which always tells you to clearly communicate with your wood worker on your options for assembling a specialize piece on site or at the shop. The other small issue was needing to add an additional hole cut in the top (which would have been easier to do while the encloser was on its side), but I will be able to do myself. Over all the encloser is huge (enough living space for my adult Iguana girl), extremely well built, and most of all a beautiful addition to the kitchen nook of our house. I did have to add some natural rug stripes to the ramps and turf to the second shelf for my Iguana girl to have some grip and wouldn't slip due to the extra water proofing, but with an exotics you will always have to do some extra modifications once the main piece is together and you have to see how your critter interacts with it to know what modifications with will be needed to be added after the fact. I will also be adding a custom man made sitting branch due to the size of her encloser and her size & weight, but again these are extra things that an owner will have to make after the fact. I highly recommend Matthew for building your custom encloser for your scaly critter family member.

Craft Built recently built a beautiful Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) / Guest House for us in our backyard and it is everything we hoped for and more! Craig, the Project Manager was on-site everyday with his crew and maintained great communication with us regarding the timeline and schedule. In the end we finished ahead of schedule and have been enjoying the additional room for family and friends all summer. We are planning a Kitchen Remodel for this coming winter and fully intend on using them again.

I asked Aaron to put a door on the master bathroom and to strip and paint the front door which had bubbling paint. The door on the bathroom is excellent. It opens and closes very smoothly and he did an excellent job in making the door fit in what was a rather small space. The front door was nicely stripped of red paint and sanded, however the paint job on the door could have been a little smoother. Aaron is very personable and listens to how you would like the job done. He worked very hard on my job and was punctual and completed the job in a timely manner. Over all, I was very pleased with Aaron's services and would hire him again should I need any other door work done

The job was completed on time, under budget and the workmanship far exceeded my expectations. I am glad that I gave a relatively new contractor the opportunity ! Mario and his team obviously have a lot of experience working for others as they completed a tough job with ease. I received bids as much as $1600 higher from people who advertise in flyers and offer discounts of several hundred dollars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! Sincerely, Eric

I had a sudden water leakage from my bathroom faucet, which destroyed the ceiling of the unit below. Also, it turned out that there has been a gradual water leakage which significantly damaged the wooden subfloor structure. I interviewed three contractors including Ken (MD Contracting). One of them could not do it because the scale of the job was beyond his capacity and another one wanted to do a $1500-demolition just to give me a precise estimate. My neighbor found him through his employee who had a very positive experience with Ken. Ken ended up doing my bathroom and the unit below and he gave us reasonable quotes. He is professional and responded to my questions promptly (This was important because I live in NY, and he worked on my investment property in Austin, TX). I strongly recommend Ken as a general contractor, and I will contact him again if I ever need home improvement projects.

Working with them was great and easy! We remodeled the whole living room, kitchen and master bathroom at a much lower price than other contractors. We are very happy with the result! They repainted the whole kitchen, added the statuary white marble countertops, changed appliances, added bamboo flooring throughout the whole living room. The entire master bathroom was tiled with marble, lights were added, mirrors, sinks, cabinets were repainted, we ordered a new tub and a shower - all was installed by the crew. It was a great experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
