Vanessa was awesome. Jenny, my fiance, is perfectly fine with getting out on the dance floor and breaking it down - not me, though. Vanessa patiently taught us swing and helped us put together a dance for our wedding. I'm way more excited (and confident) about the first dance now than I was when we started planning the wedding - and I owe that mostly to Vanessa. She's super observational and could tell us exactly what we were doing wrong and what steps were causing one or both of us to trip-up. She definitely is an expert in her field and has a keen eye for dance and ear for music. Great personality and very kind, too - which really matters in her line of work. Five stars, two thumbs up, and all the other synonyms for awesome - if you want to take dance lessons (for a wedding or for fun), Vanessa is a top-notch choice.

My fiancé and I just had our first dance lesson with Ashlyn and it went really well! We both went in there not knowing how to dance and after just one lesson we feel comfortable dancing in front of all our weddings guests. Thank you!!

I've been taking lessons from Robbie for years. She loves dance and it shows in her classes and lessons. She can teach the most advanced dancer, but also has the patience and can break down a move for the beginner dancers. When my husband and I got engaged, I knew she would be the perfect instructor for our first wedding dance. She gave us a great dance, and my husband wants to do more lessons with her to now learn Salsa.

Zoe is my favorite teacher I have ever taken class from! (and I have taken a lot) Her passion and love for dance and fitness is incredibly contagious! She is passionate about her students and really cares about helping them get the fitness goals they want. She has personally inspired me to work towards my goals and has helped me fall back in love with Dance! The first class I ever attended of Zoe's was Barre Burn at LA Dance fit. It was so intense and amazing I literally couldn't walk for 2 days! So worth it! I have also taken her SUP yoga class. It is so much fun being out in the Marina. She is professional, talented, creative and so much fun to be around! She will instantly make you feel comfortable and energetic! ZOE ROCKS!

I've only had the pleasure of taking one formal tap class with Lara, but I've received her choreography on a handful of occasions, all of which furthered my dance skills by leaps and bounds. She always used our time to its fullest (and was very patient with our various amounts of previous experience, to which she catered perfectly). Having taken lesson/choreography from Lara since junior high school, I'm happy to say she's always treated me and my peers like young professionals, which was particularly conducive to learning the most I could every session. Like several of Lara's students, I am now enrolled at a performing arts School pursuing a BFA in Drama. She's seen her students sent to Pace and New York University in NYC and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh just to name a few. I can confidently say we all owe our success in part to Lara, for her support in the classroom, and as importantly, as a presence in our day-to-day lives. An incredibly talented mother of an equally talented triple-threat of a son (and my best friend), Lara has so much to offer it will be a challenge to contain it in a Tap Lesson! I thank Lara for her guidance and instruction. I'm thrilled to see new students will have the same opportunities I did!

I've taken salsa lessons twice a week for the last month from Impulso Salsa and can not recommend them enough. I've learned so much and have the confidence to dance in a real world setting now. The classes are fun, informative and a great way to get exercise.

Let me begin by saying, before taking dance lessons from Brittany, I had no formal prior dance instruction. In fact, I didn't even know what ballroom dancing was, or even if I could do it. I have now been taking dance lessons from Brittany for several months. Not knowing what to expect when I showed up for my first one-hour lesson or even if I would click with the teacher, Brittany put me at ease from the start. In fact, I felt so positive after the first hour, I asked if I could continue that evening into a second hour of instruction and she said, sure! Brittany is patient, passionate, personable, professional, persistent, and extremely positive in her teaching methods and styles. In fact, as a result of feeling comfortable with her, she makes me laugh sometimes in the words she uses to critque and motivate me. She has a way of critiquing something that I'm not doing well by spinning it into a motivational comment to get it right and reminding me of my "muscle memory". She is an accredited dance instructor and very knowledgeable about many ballroom dances, both as a follower and leader, to teach both men and women. She is also very sharp, has lots of personality and poise, and believes in her students as she attempts to instill her passion for dancing that she so loves. Also, the cost of her lessons are very reasonable and her schedule is flexible as she tries to work with yours. It is amazing how our paths crossed as she was exactly what I was looking for. I would not hestitate to recommend her to anyone.

About

I am a professional belly dancer who's been dancing for 18 years. I have extensive training and was making a living solely on teaching and performing when I lived in West Texas. I believe that my gift is opening up women to appreciate their feminine energy and that dance can heal and transform you, as well as get you in touch with your sensuality. Belly dance is an ancient dance form with very natural movements. Anyone can learn and it's very strengthening and toning to the whole body. I teach privately and working to build up by client base to start having group classes on Saturdays.

About

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I began my dance career by being on my high school's drill team the McNeil Majestics for the past three years and ending with being the en croix choreographer in my senior year. Then after graduation, I joined three local Austin dance companies: Tru Dance Project, Third Coast Contemporary and The Other Guys. I had the opportunity to train under Quinton Weathers and many other such as Cheryl Copeland, Shepherd Allen and Jonathan Thomas from I Got Sole. I also had the opportunity to attend dance conventions such as Jump and Nuvo. I also performed in Austin's Dance Project and Dance to Breathe where I was handpicked by Chuck Maldonado to perform in his piece in Dance to Breathe. Recently, I've been to LA this past summer and took classes at the Edge as well. I am willing to take my time with my clients to ensure that they reach for their goals as dancers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.
