My first day of math class I sat at my computer and literally cried because I had no idea what I was doing. I was hesitant to pay for a tutor because as a college student money is already tight but failing my class is not an option I've meet with him once and he is awesome and believe me when I say this because the only time I give reviews is to warn people not to waste their time or money however Alfonso is worth every penny

Armin started tutoring me about 4 weeks b4 finals and at that time I had a D in algebra. Struggling was an understatement, I was falling more & more behind & I kept meeting up with tutors that would not show up. Finally I got connected to Armin who worked with me several times for 4 weeks & I finally understood algebra & with Armis help & guidance I finished the semester with a B. If I had his help from the beginning I know I would have earned an A.

I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to meet and work with Hollis. I was a 24 year old college student in desperate need of a tutor in calculus. Hollis quickly took me under his wing and helped me with academic issues I never even knew I had such as a lack of a better understanding in basic algebra and severe test anxiety. He identified these issues and focused on improving them before helping me improve my higher level math skills. He was very patient with me and if I didn't understand something he didn't make me feel inferior but instead found another way to explain it and didn't move on until I was comfortable. We'd analyze my class work and homework together so that I understood it better to get a good grade. He was extremely flexible especially when I needed him during the week and when it came to tests and finals, he was very good about meeting up with me on test day to go over last minute questions and give a good pep talk. He not only cared about my class, he also cared about my well being. There's no doubt that Hollis is a brilliant man and I couldn't have passed calculus at the University of Houston with out him! I would highly recommend anyone at any grade level looking to improve their academics to go to Hollis. I still hate calculus but Hollis made it bearable! :)

My daughter always seemed to have panic attacks leading up to tests. I was desperate to find a way for her to be comfortable especially as SATs were coming up. All I can say is after a few weeks with the tutors and life coaches at Chelsea International Education, my daughter’s confidence level went up a lot. She was not only prepared to take her SATs but her core academic skills have improved tremendously, which has helped her with her AP exams. The fact that all of the Chelsea tutors are fully qualified teachers, I think makes a major difference and really sets them apart. It really is a quality service and I am very happy to recommend them to anyone.

Erica was an amazing and very understanding tutor for my child. She worked very hard with her for about a year and a half and helped bring her up to grade level and beyond. My child went from having very low math scores to now having high Bs and even As sometimes. We couldn't have done it without her!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
