Mike James helped us design and then he installed our new backyard. We knew we wanted and needed to redo it but weren't sure what to do. He patiently walked us through options based on likes and our budget. He then handled removal of old and install of new expertly. Mike stays on top of the project constantly. He pays great attention to details and can do just about anything that is needed -- from landscape to irrigation to fencing and much more. He is professional and outstanding with communication - he kept us informed constantly on all aspects. He and his crew were prompt, neat, quick and honest. This is our second project with Mike James and we have two more planned. I now look forward to working on projects again since finding Mike James.

He arrive on time. Hit the ground running and never stopped till he found the source of trouble and fixed it with great skill and concern for doing a job well and complete. All in all he did an excellent job and produced a working irrigation system instead of a quite difficult piece of plumbing. I'd gladly recommend him to anyone or a difficult job well done.

Excellent, reputable company. Our irrigation system was destroyed to bits because of the construction on both sides of our home and American Arbors did an outstanding job to repair everything. Chuck is a good guy to work with. His crew is simply amazing.

Mr. Rey Trevino " rb Raging Bull" , and I Joe G. Flores met about August 1, 2017 as I was passing by his residence in Pflugerville, Texas. Mr. Trevino provided me with some information concerning a sprinkler system. Then on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at about 10:30 pm at night my sprinkler system had broken and water was flowing all over my back yard. I looked for the shut off value in the dark and could not find it since the grass had covered it up. I called Rey at 1-602-732-4815 and he remembered me and the address I had recently provided when we first met as it was only minutes from his residence. Rey arrived with in a few minutes observed the damaged and explained the damage and repair required. He then located the cut off value, and after removing a lot of dirt form the box, he showed me how to turn the sprinkler system water off, with out having to turn off all the water to the house. Mr. Trevino saved me some money by his willingness to assist me late at night to turn off the water to the broken sprinkler system. Mr. Trevino said I have some other jobs scheduled for Monday, morning but since you near by I will repair your sprinkler system at 8:00am before going to my first job. Rey arrived on time and with all the parts to complete the task. Mr. Trevion manner was pleasant, his work was excellent and prompt, he seemed to have a through knowledge of the irrigation and sprinkler system. I was very pleased with his work, attitude, and his professional demeanor. My big gist surprise was his discounted price for all his time, labor, material ,experience, and work. I highly and truly recommend Rey Trevino for any work for a sprinkler system and/or repair, and am sure he could save you some money also. Joe G. Flores

Jeremy and his team were excellent throughout the process. First, through quoting, Jeremy was extremely responsive and helpful in fine tuning my plans without being overbearing or pressuring. Then, during the job, they put things together quickly and professionally. Finally, what really made them stand out was how they handled a problem - I had an issue with my irrigation system that, left unresolved, would have led to some very dead grass. Instead of 'sorry, this wasn't our fault' or 'we'll get to it eventually', they worked consistently after everything else was completed to get this resolved and everything working well. I would highly recommend Jeremy and his team!

I asked Rob and IPS to modernize a 20-year old lawn and landscape irrigation system with 96 individual heads, updating the heads, and adding drip tubes to sidewalk strips and flower beds. I am exceedingly pleased with all the work and the attention to detail, right down to adjusting the Rachio controller. Great job!

Tom was a pleasure to have in our home. Tom helped to put together a boot bench and a television cabinet. The television cabinet was complex, but Tom handled it easily. He also helped to put up a dry erase board in minutes. I recommend Tom to any friends that need help with a handyman, whether it's assembling new furniture or repairing a sprinkler system. Thanks, Tom!

This was my first time using this app, so wasn’t sure what to expect. Morales Irrigation was the first company to respond. Edgar met me at my house, checked the sprinkler system and found a bad valve. Edgar recommended a fix and a gave me a quote immediately that was great. Edgar came out this morning and repaired the sprinkler and works perfectly again. I highly recommend his service. Thanks, Mike

Our sprinkler system needed to be reprogrammed and sprinkler heads aimed for best watering. We also needed to have height extenders installed on two sprinkler heads. The front flower bed looked pretty sad with two dead rose bushes. Thanks to E.J., Davis, Chase and Ivan with A Cut Above everything was taken care of for us with exceptional service and expertise. They were on time, friendly and professional. I particularly like the plants chosen as replacements for the flower bed, 2 red sage plants and 1 red yucca surrounded by river rock. I was given great and easy instructions on caring for our new plants. I would recommend A Cut Above to all our friends and neighbors and will definitely call them for future landscaping advice and projects.

Jameson, was fantastic. I had him come basically redo a whole new irrigation system in my yard and the attention to detail you put go make sure everything was perfect and that I wouldn’t have any issues in the future was amazing! I would hire him in heartbeat for any other outdoor projects I have. If I could I would give him 100 out of 100 on this review. Thank you Jameson!!!

Juan diagnosed the problem, fixed it and inspected the whole system. I am not 100% satisfied because of the charge. $175 for work completed in less than an hour, with no part replaced.

After listening to our drainage problem Brad offered some creative, multi approach options that worked with my budget. Upon deciding on one, his team worked tirelessly and consistently until project was completed. The result was above and beyond my expectations. With the hardest rains since then the solution moves water away from draining under my house, even with part of the French drain system not in full operation (I haven’t put gutters on that part of the house yet). Brad and his team were professional; the work was top notch. I would highly recommend his services and will be using him for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
