Absolutely excellent! I hire contractors all the time for my clients when we need to perform repairs after a house has been sold and inspected. The Enoch guys communicated very well, we're on time, and got the repairs done very quickly, but beyond that the price was overly fair and really saved my clients money since they knew what they were doing and exactly what the problems were . Highly recommended !

Jorge came out to our home, a 1950's duplex conversation that is in the process of a gut remodel. He took his time, walked the rooms, and the outer perimeter asking questions on where we liked items placed, our needs and any concerns. The home never had HVAC, it was a window unit and space heater nightmare so this was always going to be a big job. Jorge and his team arrived early, on schedule and walked the rooms again making sure everyone know the exact game plan. We had a giant heavy attic fan that they removed, and did not charge us a penny to do so! That took about 45 minutes labor for 3 people, good job. We had a 4 Ton unit, 9 vents, electrical lines run all in the same day. I told the team don't worry too much about making a mess since the walls are getting knocked down in a couple of days but they insisted in cleaning up. The pricing is what shocked us the most. Me and my wife feel not only did we get a good deal, but we kind of robbed them. Not only was the price amazing but this install was right at the start of summer where HVAC installers are in demand and tend to hike up the prices.. Not this company! We got 5 quotes, and Jorge was easily the lowest, by several thousand on a couple! All components used were high quality. Jorge even texted me the next day to make sure everything was ok and to offer some ideas to pass to our contractors. I will be using Jorge for our maintenance and other projects we have and will absolutely recommend his services without hesitation.

I have worked with three different contractors on various projects over the past four months...this gentleman (Josh) was a pleasure to work with and I will be calling him again for additional services. He reviewed the area of concern on a Sunday, gave me a quote and had the job finished in less than 3 hours at the price he quoted.

Cooley with Universal Contractors did an awesome job. When he arrived it was like a sauna upstairs and downstairs in my house. He researched what he thought the issues could possibly be and after doing so he talked to me about what needed to be replaced along with the pricing. He gave me a small discount because he was a couple of hours late due to the traffic. Also, He ensured that I understood what was going on with my units. By the time he left my house, it had begun to cool off. He called and texted several more times to ensure that everything is still going well. I will use him to replace my upstairs unit. I just want him to be early this time :)

Mike and his crew did a great job of replacing my entire HVAC unit, inside and out, on a very hot Texas day. I called him late on a Friday afternoon and he came out personally the same day to evaluate my problem. After he examined my system, we decided I needed to replace both the compressor/condenser unit outside and the evaporator inside, considering they were 23 years old. Mike offered me a great price for a brand name AC system and installation. He and his crew came early the next day and installed the entire system, which by 1:30pm was blowing the cool air we needed. I would recommend him to anyone. He didn't charge for his initial service call so it was worth it to give him a try. I couldn't be happier with the results.

I like Jon because he came with the intention of not forcing me to change my system but to repair it. BUT I THINK IT WAS TIME. I had few contractors coming and giving me estimates and to be honest he seems more reliable. The work was fast and the system worked after few hours of install. So far no problem so im happy

Cool Tech was definitely the best mix of expertise, price and customer service out of the 5 HVAC contractors I had bid our house. They had the best price and a common sense approach on what options were worth paying for and which ones were not. They were the only group to provide a detailed engineered report on the unique HVAC aspects of my home. Once installed, there was a minor issue that occurred overnight. They came back first thing the next day and corrected it. First rate group all the way around.

Matt came out and installed a downdraft duct and rerouted another separate duct under our house. He was able to respond right away to our needs. He was honest and did the work we asked. My wife and I made a mistake in where we had him place the duct. However, Matt was a professional and came back out and moved it for us. Working with Matt has been a great experience. I will be using him again for my duct and HVAC needs..

After several bad experiences with my home warranty company, I contacted Air Care. From the office staff scheduling to the technician, everyone was professional and courteous. My home warranty contractors kept telling me nothing was wrong with my ac, but it never kept up on hot days. Rusty took the time to check the system and found two torn ducts as well as a refrigerant leak. Because of the age of my system, I decided to replace. David put together an awesome quote with financing that made the system affordable.

I never thought I'd be ranting and raving about a plumbing company but I've told so many people how good it was to work with SWAN. Amazing customer service & communication. And helped us solve our plumbing issue for a very fair price. Worked late to squeeze us in. Just all around a great experience, which is so important when your family is going through the stress of plumbing issues & not having water. We worked with/spoke to several plumbing companies and yall were by far the best. Thank you Jordan & team!

I'm very grateful for Cobb's heating and AC. Larry was responsive to my family's needs, very professional, and what I appreciate the most is that it actually mattered to him that my family and I had been suffering in this heat. He was determined to help my family feel comfortable in our home once again. Larry responded fast, he arrived when he said he would, and he actually fixed my air problem. I made the mistake of choosing Universal Contractors when my AC first stopped working, and was unfortunately scammed out of $350. I learned my lesson and will now choose Cobb's heating and AC for all my HVAC needs from now on.

Todd from Texas Discount Air is my hero. Our heater quit lighting, and nothing we did would fix the problem. I called a few contractors and they were pushing me to replace the entire furnace. With a seriously ill husband and daughter and no income, this was just not possible. Then Todd came to look at the furnace. He showed me what the likely cause was - a very simple fix - and walked me through everything I needed to know in order to fix the heater myself in minutes. I have not words enough nor time to express how huge this was. What a blessing! What an honest, kind, ethical man! I will never again call on any other contractor for our heating and cooling needs. I know that in the future, regardless of how big or small the job is, I can trust Todd to give me a straight answer and fair pricing for any repair.

After 2 different AC repair companies, Tim was by far the best. He was super helpful and clear about what he was doing and recommending, even helping me save money along the way. The pricing was also the best option for me. With the other repairmen, they would show up late and take a really long time to get things done (to the point where I had to call Tim). Tim and his crew replaced my entire AC system hours faster than expected. Also, Tim's warranty and maintenance can't be beat. I couldn't recommend Tim more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
