I bought my home in July of 2012. The home didn't have a pantry. I had a space that was going to waste and was of no use at all in my dining room. Dan designed a pantry and used the existing wall beside the refrigerator which separated the dining room from the kitchen. Dan designed and build a pantry for that space. He kept a small part of the molding and fitted the pantry into the molding on two sides so that it appears that the pantry was built into the house as if it was original. I can't say enough good things about the workmanship on this pantry. He noticed that the door had more space at the top than at the bottom. He removed the door and adjusted it so that it fits snugly and perfectly. I would gladly recommend Dan for any design or repair work on any job, large or small. The home also had the original builder toilets in it. I had Dan replace both the master and guest bath toilets. He noticed that one of the toilets had a very small leak. Dan removed the new (and never been used) toilet and took it back to Lowe's and got a new replacement toilet and installed it. This shows the attention to detail that Dan exercises in all that he does.

I have been looking for someone like Juan to help with some things around my house for a while and I'm so glad I found him. He just finished an install on a new exterior door an did a wonderful job and didn't finish the job until it was hung absolutely perfect! He is going to help with my kitchen remodeling soon too. I would definitely recommend Juan to anyone for home improvement, he does a great job at very reasonable prices and is a very nice man as well! Thanks again!!

Gustavo and his team were here by 8:30am every morning and worked until after 7pm. They finished painting my entire kitchen including cabinets in 3 days. Overall I’m pleased. His price was excellent. I think some detail work could have been a tad better but still excellent.

I've worked with Chiara on 3 projects so far. I initially contacted her because we recently purchased a new home that needed to be completely updated. We did an initial consultation and also met at the house so she could see the space. She presented a paint selection which we were both happy with at the first try. We only made some minor adjustments to the first colors she chose due to the lighting in the house. In addition to the paint selection she found painters who were top notch - and they did the job in on a tight schedule. For the sake of this review I won't go into extreme detail but the week of our move we were on a previously planned vacation and I had no hesitation giving her a key to the house for access for herself and the painters while we were gone. She supervised the job while we were gone and we were extremely happy with the result and having that done before moving in. At the last minute we decided we wanted to have the master closet redesigned and installed. She quickly created a functional design and found a contractor to do the building of the closet. While the installation of the closet itself took longer than I thought it would (this was not due to Chiara - our communication and expectations of the contractor could not have been more clear and besides, these things happen sometimes), I'm very happy with the finished product. Most recently I contacted her for the kitchen space. I purchased and refinished a kitchen table & chairs but wasn't sure about the color so I reached out to her to talk about the kitchen design even though we won't be starting that remodel until a later date. We did a consultation and talked about the design for the kitchen in detail. I was again very happy with the initial design and only made a few minor changes while we were talking about some of the details. She was able to get the kitchen chair cushions reupholstered for me in beautiful fabric that fits with the design we are doing in the house for a reasonable cost. Before contacting Chiara for the kitchen I was trying to figure it out myself and did some driving around town looking at fabrics. If you have never done that before it is completely overwhelming! I'm so glad I gave up on the DIY plan! She has oodles of resources, contractors, upholsterers, painters, people who do wonderful, quality work for a reasonable cost. We are currently working on floors for the extra bedrooms in the house. Truly, Chiara has been a pleasure to work with. She is very professional, prepared, she listens and works to incorporate your "vision" for your space while giving good design advice. She has been able to work on our timeline, doing one project at a time, little by little. I know a lot of people think that with Pinterest and HGTV you can do it yourself. Not true!! The investment in a designer for your home can make all the difference and without reservation I would recommend Chiara for any size project of whatever style/taste.

We've been wanting to remodel our kitchen since we moved in summer 2011. The house was built in 1999, and the kitchen looked it. We connected with Holly around 3 months ago. Her reviews are stellar and she is well-respected in our community. Holly provided us a quote that was competitive and comprehensive. We compared it with two other contractors; weighed various factors, i.e., labor, supplies, workmanship, proposed timeline, etc., etc., and decided that Holly was the best choice. We have extremely busy schedules. Holly managed the remodel every step of the way. She helped us make choices regarding colors, granite, and tile. In fact she came to our home with samples on a Saturday morning, since that was best for our schedules, and made great suggestions that we used ultimately. Everyone on her team was outstanding - granite, painting, tile. Attention to detail and quality of work was stellar. We felt our home was in good hands at all times, and were never let down. Holly asked for 10-14 days to complete the project. It was finished in 9 days. We could not be happier.

We are SO glad that we went with Dan at Design + Color for our house! He was punctual, professional and provided creative design concepts and ideas to give us exactly what we were looking for. He left his workspace spotless before he left, too. He provided excellent results for us in our kitchen and our guest bathroom. Also, he was just an awesome guy. We would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone - and will absolutely use him going forward with any other remodeling work. A+

I had a flood in my house and the baseboards needed to be replaced. I hired Chris and he did a great job. I highly recommend Chris and would/will use him again should the need arise. Additionally, I asked Chris if he could make me an outdoor cabinet for my outdoor kitchen area. He looked at it, gave me a price and his ideas and a few days later came back to install it and it looks awesome...have already received several compliments on it. Good guy...hire him, he'll do you right!

Alex and Jorge were A+. I am very thankful to have hired them to do my two projects - kitchen and bathroom tile remodel. Their communication is great and they are committed to getting the job done how the customer likes it. They worked with me when I had a few additional request or special requests and they did everything with a good attitude. I previously hired a man by the name of John Rodriguez based out of Plano / North Texas and he was AWFUL. Stay away from him. I wish I hired Alex and Jorge before. They fixed all his work. Thanks A&J!

Carlos and Jamie did a wonderful job and are great to work with. I had a brick outdoor kitchen surrounding a gas line, hose spigot, and right next to some windows. I also was trying to save the existing grill which was attached to the brick. They took care of everything quickly and left everything clean and were very detailed to make sure nothing got damaged. Will definitely be using them again for some other house projects.

Brandon was very responsive from the time he sent his quote to finishing the job. If there was a delay of any kind he was always sure to communicate that with me. There were many selections of stone to choose from and he helped me pick the one that looked better for my idea. Bronson and his team came and finished the work in a timely manner. The Valiant Outdoor Designs team is professional and provides quality work. I'd recommend them to anyone and will be doing work with them in the future!

John is the only contractor I would call for any job I do in the future. He helped me save money on my materials and has proven to be quite the wildcard! My projects have always finished in reasonable time, the transformation was smooth, the quality was perfect and the job site was always tidy! He did the various types flooring throughout my whole house, created custom built-ins and custom cabinets. I referred him to my mother and he did various types of floors in her home, transformed bathrooms and added on stairs and door to her deck. He has reliable subcontractors who have provided quality work, too. He was always on time. I cannot say enough, really. He also likes to work with designers which I LIKE a lot, sometimes I send him ideas and he gives me advice and feedback. Truly an all around great guy and top-notch contractor.

Spencer did a great job for me. I am an interior designer and ran into a major problem with the cabinets I had ordered from another company. Spencer was able to provide me with an alternate product at my customer's price point and deliver and install the cabinets in a reasonable timeframe. The product was very good for the price. There were a few minor bumps in which I and my client would have benefited by a little more thorough knowledge of his product on Spencer's part; however, Spencer was very responsive and I would definitely use Kitchen Cabinets Now! again. Giving this a 4-star review but really merits a 4.5 rating.

I was very impressed with the work that Frank and his crew did. His attention to detail and interior design scheme gives the kitchen remodel a warm comfortable feeling to work in. With many design changes presented to him as the remodel progressed, he easily accommodated them. Frank is a responsible, very hard worker willing to please.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new kitchen!!! I ordered a modern style kitchen with glass facades from Modern Concept in May, the kitchen arrived from Europe in less than 5 weeks and was delivered and installed in my new house in North Dallas without any issues. It is SPUR stylish cool looking and specially created for my kitchen and house design. I love automatic opening hardware on drawers and cabinets, glass facades look slick and very modern! All my friends and neighbors are very impressed by this design, quality, and especially absolutely affordable price! I could get IKEA MDF kitchen for price of this European glass beauty! So happy with my order from Modern Concept and would highly recommend this company and glass kitchen. You can email me if you want my review o recommendations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
