My brother and I first started using Keith when I was in 5th grade. Keith brought them increased test scores, as well as true understanding of the concepts they are learning. 7th grade was when I began studying with Keith. From the start, Keith was incredibly warm and friendly, and also had a grasp on every concept in my schoolwork. I continued to learn with Keith throughout high school, and I honestly say that he was the reason I succeeded in ACT, Math, Chemistry and Physics. I have never met someone more devoted to their work and to their students. He would work with me for countless hours until I understood the material so I would be prepared. He would even answer homework questions over texting on his own time. I believe that his work ethic and friendly personality are what sets him apart from other tutors. I am now in college at the University of Illinois, and I still consult Keith with questions from time to time. I would truly recommend him as a tutor to anyone.

Working with Melanie was wonderful! I came to her since I needed help in improving my SAT Reading and Writing scores (which they did!), and after a few sessions, I definitely felt ready for the test. The sessions took place in her home, which was nice and cozy. Melanie was great at giving feedback on my essays, and I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a good SAT English tutor.

"A patient, intuitive and smart tutor who really connects with me" Sandeep is an expert. He exceeded my expectations. If you want the best and if you want the best results, go with Sandeep. Sandeep is an excellent tutor. He was extremely thorough and quickly found my weaknesses. he was extremely valuable when he focused on my weak points and we worked together to improve them. He also helped me write, edit and proofread my college applications, essays, resume and cover letter. I had a wonderful experience with Sandeep. I really enjoyed my sessions with him. He is brilliant and he connected with and engaged me and truly made SAT prep fun and positive for me. I was also looking for someone to help me write my personal statement for my college apps and to polish up my cover letter and resume. I was looking for someone with excellent writing skills. Sandeep knows how to how to present my strengths in my essays and applications. I also worked with Sandeep remotely for a while (phone, emails & fax) and that saved a lot of time. Since Sandeep's rate is on the higher side, I did not work with him initially, but after working with him, I know he's totally worth it. Having worked with other tutors in the past, I can say that Sandeep is the tutor and writer you need if you are looking for the best. Don't wait.

Michelle is such a caring, and genuinely understanding person and tutor! I went into SAT tutoring scared and now I take the test in November and I'm feeling ten times more confident about it. I can really tell I have improved since the beginning of our sessions and I owe it all to her, she truly is amazing. Over time we really have developed a friendship and I am so excited to see how I do on the test!

Blessing was hired to tutor my college sophomore. My daughter has learning disabilities and needed help to get through the required college math. Blessing has been wonderful with her. She is patient and willing to go over anything my daughter needs her to. She explains the concepts and doesn't just help her "get through the work." One time while my daughter was away for the weekend Blessing developed a 10 page math review for her to help her with an upcoming test! Over and beyond. So glad we made the choice to hire her!

Before finding Brittany, our family had gone through six other tutors and tried a few different agencies. My daughter Maggie had not done well on her SAT and had struggled in math as well. Brittany worked with her over eight weeks to cover each section in depth and really helped her to understand the material. My daughter retook the test and her score improved 370 points! Brittany has so much experience and is so great at working with our daughter to get to the root of the problem. We recommended her to all of our friends with children in high school. If you need help with test prep for your students, she is the tutor for you! Brittany made Maggie feel so comfortable and helped her so much with understanding the material, that we kept her on as a weekly tutor for math and chemistry. She is such a bright and compassionate young girl, we feel so thankful to have her in our lives!

Mrs. Blojay helped my daughter make progress in several of her math classes, especially in Algebra. The customized plans she developed for my daughter accurately identified the learning gaps that had impeded her grasping new concepts. While working on the learning gaps, my daughter was better able to grasp and understand the concepts presented to her. As a result, my daughter kept pace in her math classes and successfully completed them. Equally important, my daughter made acceptable math scores on college entrance exams and gained entry to college-level math classes without having to take non-credit prep math courses. Mrs. Blojay also provided a foundation of problem-solving strategies that assisted my daughter throughout her college years and into her current profession. As a retired educator (math teacher and guidance counselor), I can appreciate the efforts made by Mrs. Blojay in assuring the successful outcome for each student she encounters. Her comprehensive approach to "meeting the student where he/she is" and providing understandable, knowledge-building steps to "where he/she should be" is highly beneficial and satisfying to the student. Students who have received tutoring from Mrs. Blojay met or surpassed the required passing scores on local school and national assessments. As a result of receiving help from Mrs. Blojay, students have thrived, succeeded, and gained self-confidence in learning and using math.

Ms. Wen is an amazing violin instructor. She has studied violin and piano since 5 years to age and it shows through her knowledge and practice of the arts. My son and daughter love working with her and always look forward to her lessons. I make sure my kids practice at least 30 minutes every day to apply what they learned in their music and build a solid foundation. Wen is very responsive and will be flexible with my schedule if my kids have something come up. Recommend 5/5

Dr. Fikar is extremely knowledgeable of the SAT and Subject tests, quite detailed with his approach and study materials, and patient with his teaching. While my son has yet to take the exam, I feel confident with Dr. Fikar guiding him toward the test date. Yes, he is expensive, but I believe the sessions will be well worth it. Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.
