The problem with home repairs is that they don't always go as scheduled. The good news is mine was not an emergency and I was willing to work with Jason. Jason called, let me know what was happening on his current job and that he was running behind. We agreed to reschedule. He showed up late the next day. In his favor, he did call me and let know what was happening and the reason for delay. He did make it to house, found the problem with my plumbing and was on his way in 30 minutes. I have no issues with hiring him again if and when needed. Sad part is, even though he was done in 30 minutes he was still running behind for his last job of the day. Told him I would keep his number on file for future use if he was ok with it. He was. Will not hesitate to call him again if needed.

Robbin was punctual, professional and extremely attentive to our home improvement needs. He connected us with other service professionals if he wasn't comfortable doing the job himself. He was affordable and worth every penny. He made sure everything was just right and cleaned up afterwards. The services he provided was caulking windows, replacing ceiling fans, rerouting ac drain, and inspecting plumbing noise. Robbin is a reliable and a very hardworking handyman. He kept us in the loop with everything he was doing and continues to offer excellent customer service even after the job. We will definitely hire him again in the future. Thank you again for your valuable services!!!

Texas Best Handyman responded to my thumbtack request to install new windows within minutes of my request, answered my call the first time, and was over completing the work within days. Eric and his partner did an excellent job of the install even though some of the windows I ordered were too small. No sweat for him and looks perfect. And the price was right. While they were there, I had Eric bid out some other projects, and ended up hiring them for 2 complete bathroom remodels and a kitchen backsplash. They re-routed plumbing lines, built a shower pan and moved the drain in the master, tiled everything and textured drywall surrounding the showers. Very clean work and had it all done in 7 days! This was a lot of work. He even fixed some mortar imperfections left over from someone else who did our floors. The most refreshing part of it all is that they showed up at 8:00 am every day, worked efficiently and effectively, did exactly what they promised, and I felt comfortable enough with him that i gave him a key to the house. Hire him, you won't be disappointed. I don't normally leave reviews, but when I do, it's because the world needs to know about it.

I needed to hire a painter for my place of business which is a hair salon. I hired Jose and he was just fantastic! His communication was very thorough and he was on time and he did a wonderful job. I actually needed him to repaint the room from a prior painter who did a very sloppy job. Jose made my room look bright and beautiful and on top of it he cleaned everything so thoroughly. He wanted to leave my room spotless and I could tell he took a lot of pride in his services. I was very impressed with his work and I have already hired him to do a plumbing job next in my salon. He is the nicest guy you want to work with and he has an excellent work ethic. He is very upfront and honest he will tell you what he can or cannot do and his prices are very fair. Jose is going to be my go to guy for any handyman work I need in my salon going forward. I highly recommend him for whatever your handyman needs maybe. This man is a true professional!

Carl is a good man who is true to his word. Very fair pricing and got the job done right the first time. I had a pool pump motor acting up and he came out, told me what was wrong and even helped me search for a replacement motor online. Once the pump came in he was here the next day and got us all setup. I'd recommend Carl for any pool related services along with plumbing, electrical or mechanical work. We'll be using him in the near future for some ceiling fan and exterior lighting installations. Great guy. Thanks, Carl!

They were on time and completed work efficiently. Their prices are way above market and I was way overcharged for a disposal replacement. We had them look at our toilet handle that was broken as well and they quoted $150 for a "partial rebuild." All my toilet needed was a new $10 handle which I bought at Home Depot and put on myself. The original reason for the call was my shower pressure has diminished greatly. They suggested I replace the shower head (which I ended up doing on my own after buying a new one from Home Depot). When I got home from work (my wife was there during the work being done) the kitchen sink faucet (where they replaced the garbage disposal) is not so loose I have to hold it still with one hand to turn it on and keep it from coming out of the frame. I am having the same issue with my shower handle where they removed the shower head to verify it just needed a new one.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
