How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Stop looking for an electrician and call Ruben. Ruben knows his stuff and is my go to electrician now for my house and all my rental properties. I had 4 electrical outlets not working on various sides of an older house. I had other electricians tell me they charged by the hour and the price could be very high, and would have to remove Sheetrock to fix the issue. Ruben showed up on time, assessed the issue, and quickly fixed all of them in less than 30 minutes with no Sheetrock removal. Gave me a flat rate charge that was very reasonable.

The electrician did a good job but it took longer to diagnose the issue. It took at least 30 minutes longer than it should’ve. It was a easy fix once diagnosed.

I cannot say enough about AEE- they set an appointment, after responding immediately. Showed up exactly when they said they would, and the electrician was possibly one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I wish all contractors were half as wonderful as this one was today. I will be recommending within my neighborhood app as well. Thank you!!!

Have Jorge installed 1 ceiling fan and 2 light fixtures for me. All need very tall ladders which is something I don't have and not comfortable to do. Jorge was very responsive to my messages. His price is also very reasonable comparing to other licensed electricians. There was some communication/ payment issue but we were able to work things out at the end. Very polite and it was pleasant to work with him.

One of the best electricians, I’ve ever worked with. We had a super small job and honestly could’ve done it ourselves (connecting a fan remote to the light switch), however we were nervous about doing it incorrectly. Demetrus offer to walk us through the process for free over the phone, so it wouldn’t cost us any money. We were still nervous so he came out and did it for a very reasonable price. I truly appreciate his generosity and coming by to help us with a job that literally took him 10 mins lol. He didn’t have too and could’ve decline, however he went out of his way to help us. He now has a customer for life, please use him for your services. He’s amazing!

The chandelier fell as the electrician was attempting to put it up. It’s now installed and broken. Friendly reminder of you yelling to your partner to hold the “stressors” better when it fell as I watched from my kitchen… The light broke and the arm is rigged. We overlooked the fact you showed up two days late for the job. Even after dropping it we didn’t ask you to refund it… we simply asked you repair what you broke. This will cost us more to fix than your install at this point… Coincidentally this is the arm that came undone when it was dropped. As you can see all the copper wiring now - you didn’t even want to fix the light you broke but I made it clear it needed to be done and you finally agreed.. ( pic of arm and light that was repaired ) it’s a shame As far as the rate goes - if you felt underpaid you shouldn’t of taken the job?!

We had someone from MS Installations come out to look at a breaker that wouldn't stay on and a thermostat that wasn't getting power. They responded very promptly and had someone come out the same day, so I'm giving them a star for that! Once the electrician got here, he flipped the breaker back on and told us it must have been the weather. We told him it would trip again, but he said if it did, we would need a new breaker. I felt like we knew this before we ever called MS. For the thermostat, which wasn't getting enough power for some reason, he looked in the attic, determined it was too difficult to get to, then said we would have to call an A/C guy for that. So I paid this company $200 and got a grand total of none of my problems solved. This was about 6 weeks ago and I'm still pretty upset about it. Something tells me they are not going to give me my money back, and I don't care to have them out again, so I'm considering it a sunk cost. Sounds like others have had more luck - if you choose to hire these guys, I hope you do too! But we won't be using their services again.
