Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

5 stars PLUS! I never hesitate to give a positive review when it is deserved. Blue Electric exceeded all my expectations! Impeccable service electrician Zach came to our home to fix a broken outlet, dimmer switches and replace a ceiling fixture post Texas winter storm. Professional and respectful of keeping things clean which we appreciated so much since we just had new carpeting installed. This is now our designated electrician company. I can't say enough great things about the work and quality. We also love that their work is guaranteed for life. Thank you for such a wonderful service. You have gained our trust after having had so many previous electricians fail to meet our expectations. The best!

I highly recommend this gentleman. He is a master electrician and knows what he’s doing. He showed up on time, and explained what he was doing and what was needed to fix the problem. Then he quoted a price before starting. I will definitely use him again in the future.

Honest good workers. Samantha the office manager keeps you informed. The electrician made sure that all waste was taken care of! These are the light fixtures I purchased and they removed existing light fixtures. I also supplied light bulbs but if you need materials, inquire with Samantha or the team-

I did not hire the company as they quoted me $702 for a small job. The apparent electrician called me to say for just testing where the fault is they will charge 702 for the full solution. Also trying to sell his plan at the same time. I got the issue fixed by someone else by just paying under 150. The company is not what it says it is! Beware

Keith Myers is an outstanding electrician. He is very friendly, skilled and hard working. He installed an outdoor patio fan for us and had to do some problem solving when he came across a switch that wasn't working. He also installed a fluorescent light in our garage to provide better lighting. He also helped us with an issue we were having with a previously installed alarm system that went off while he was at our house!

Chris is a very nice and professional electrician. He worked hard for us. But we needed him to come back to finish the job because he didn't have the right tool. So we prepaid him for his trip back to us, even though he said it wouldn't be a charge. I felt it was only fair to give gone a little extra because he was going to come back and help us. Well, he didn't show up, and after the months and many missed appointments after he told us he was on his way, he never came back. Tl:dr- never came back to finish job and blew us off multiple times over several months.

We hired Jay’s Electric to add an outlet so that we can run our outdoor water feature. We had an appointment with another company, but they cancelled an hour before our appointment. Jay’s came up in a last minute search this morning. We were relieved that they were able to get us in on such short notice. Mr. Hammid showed up about an hour later and squared us right away. He was professional, throughly explained how he planned to complete the work, priced right, and left the area as pristine as he’d found it! We’ll definitely be calling this company for future projects and will highly recommend it to others! Update: We were so pleased with Jay’s Electric’s work, that we hired him to come today, 9/10/20210, for a number of tasks (full motion tv brackets x2, garage rack, added curtain rods to pergola, and outdoor lighting). Needless to say, he did an amazing job on them all! We love his attention to detail and the fact that he’s so meticulous at everything he does. He is truly a skilled electrician, but he’s also skilled in so many others areas. Hiring him is money well spent. Thank you, THANK YOU for displaying so much pride, professionalism, and amazing work ethic!
