Worth every penny! I was hesitant to book a relationship counselor, because my Hubby-2-be and I are so in-sync. I was even more hesitant to add an expense to our wedding budget. The 1 hour with Mr. Morris went amazingly. He is not a therapist always asking "well, how do you feel?", we learned a great deal about relationships, marriage, and how important key aspects like communication need to be! Looking forward to session two!

My wife and I jointly agreed that our marriage had gotten distant. We seemed to be too caught up in jobs and our 2 young children to consider the health of the relationship between us. We knew that our relationship could be improved, however we also had to admit that seeking a professional was the best way to do that. Having done some research online, we interviewed a few family therapists and in the end decided on Jesse at The Woodlands Center for Couples and Families. Jesse was able facilitate discussions, provide empathy for our situations and offer guidance on the next steps. Jesse gave both of us the knowledge and tools necessary to keep our marriage (and thus our family) not only together but healthy and evergreen. My wife and I are very pleased with the level of service and professionalism we experienced with Jesse.

Charlotte is an excellent massage therapist and overall caring person. She genuinely cares about your own individual needs and absolutely goes over and beyond being a massage therapist her care does not end at the end of your massage. I will with no hesitation recommend her to everyone i know.

After trying out numerous therapists to treat my 17 year old daughter's anxiety, Tobie Oidtmann saved the day! She was different than the other counselors/therapists we tried; not only was she really easy for my daughter to talk with, she also gave my daughter tangible exercises to do at home that really worked. Tobie is so warm and genuine that it really put my daughter at ease. I highly recommend Tobie to anyone who needs help.

I highly recommend Dr. Tyler Hamel if you are looking for a natural alternative to medicine. I was told by a medical doctor when I was 15 I needed surgery and would not be able to conceive a child because of scoliosis. Through chiropractic and nutritional services I now have 4 children. Dr. Hamel treats the body as a whole and doesn't try to mask the problem or put a "band-aid" to cover it up. He is extremely professional and very knowledgeable. If you're tired of the medical model we have now days of blanketing, try Dr. Hamel and actually fix the problem.

I have been seeing Daphne for about two years now, I have tried a couple of therapists before and could not find the chemistry that I have with her. She helps me to find and analize different pathways to take; to get to know myself better by asking me questions and talking about different situations. She is more like a friend than a therapist to me, because we have achieved a high level of trust, which is so important in therapy. My depression has improved as well since I started therapy. She is also bilingual, so I could bring my mom for a family therapy session! I have recommended her to my friends already!

my son has been going to speech therapy for more than 2 years, he was started with articulation difficulty and later was also given therapy for language delay. the overall progress was excellent. the staff, the therapist, Ms dana, all are very helpful, always open to communications and concerns and also go out of there way to help a particular child, they have you feel at home. Ms Dana also takes extra efforts to see that each child coming to therapy is successful and will also help all her way out to fulfill that. The environment they provide for the kids is loving, caring and kids love to go there instead of dragging them to go to the therapy. i am happy to see my child's progress after going to the therapy.

Over the years I tried to get healthy by going from one diet to another, from one type of workout to another, but couldn’t stick to anything and make it a lifestyle. I realized that in order to have a healthy body, you have to find your soul’s peace and seek to understand what makes your energy spark in life. The next step then, is to fuel it with a healthy diet, exercise, and meditation. Cafe Ayurveda created by Dr. Gupta is the perfect place to start this journey. Here you will meet Ayurveda specialists, who are pure at heart, and will dedicate themselves to help you find a better version of you, the version that we have all once seen when we looked at the unpolluted body and soul of a child who has boundless energy, who dreams endlessly, and is stress-free. Ayurveda treatments at Cafe Ayurveda connect you with nature to bring the balance back to your body. You will find yourself replacing coffees with juices and Ayurvedic decoctions, and TV with daily yoga and pranayama. It will become your lifestyle as you begin to feel energetic, strong, and happier than ever! - Andrea

I had Melissa as a therapist and she was amazing! In the past I've seen other therapist and did not think they were any good. She was different because she would really try to listen and understand me. My boyfriend and I had trust issues and it caused me to have a lot of anxiety and depression. She helped us learn to talk to each other the right way!

I worked as a physical therapist with 23 years of experience. I am looking for employment options in the Houston area.

I've moved from Italy since March 2014 due to my husband's international assignment. In Italy, I've been working for almost thirty years as professor of Math and Physics in high school and I'm willing to consider any opportunity as family support for child assistance and school homework. I'm familiar with children as I have three who are all above twenty and I led the Boy Scout Group in my town for ten years (I'm certified as an International Training Leader). Finally, I consider this as a great opportunity to further improve my English and to establish stronger local relationships with mutual benefits.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
