I received excellent service from the Sweetwater Plumbing company. He was there on time and resolved my drain clog as best he could. A camera check revealed I have a busted sewer line and roots are causing the blockage, but Cordrey was able to clean out the blockage and get the water draining. I will need to have the sewer line replaced and I have already been provided an estimate from Sweetwater to have that work done in a month or two.

AL Rooter Plumbing is responsive, reasonable, honest, and determined. We had a laundry drain that spewed water all over the floor whenever we did laundry as well as a sewer main that needs to be replaced in the backyard. Ramez managed to clear the laundry drain after what sounded like a fierce battle on the roof and then provided us with reasonable options for the remaining work that needs to be done. It was clear that he wanted us to be confident in the diagnosis and treatment of the issues and was not pushy or overbearing. He will be out go to plumber for and future issues. Highly recommend if you want an honest plumber that won’t empty your bank account!

Melky and his team stuck with my problem until they solved it. I was honestly afraid I was going to have to jackhammer up 100 square feet of concrete to get to a sewer line...but they found a way around it and solved the problem of my 80+ year old sewer lines.

Little Jon’s plumbing are my hero’s! Working long into the night for two nights Jon would not give up on finding the problem with my plumbing. It turned out that a subcontractor doing work next door had fractured my sewer line and hidden the damage. Jon helped me to provide the information necessary to get the subcontractor to own and repair the line. I really don’t know what I would have done without Jon’s expertise. His prices were competitive and he offered flexible evening hours. I cannot recommend this plumber enough. Truly the best!

We wanted to replace an existing bathtub with a shower but the drain didn't line up so we had to call a professional. The plumbing in our old house was old and some not up to building codes. We hired Kenneth with AAM & Associates to install the shower. He had to re-route the drain, relocate the supply lines, locate the sewer drain and install a clean out AND he created an entire full bath for us that we didn't think we could afford until we saw the quote Kenneth gave us for the work. We LOVE our new bathroom--even the pipes behind the walls look great. Kenneth is a real professional. I would recommend him to anyone in need of plumbing repairs or a bath or kitchen renovation or new install. He's a really nice guy too.

Mike just replaced a 55 feet section of a broken sewer line. Mike is a decent, honest and very reasonable professional. He completed the work before time and overcame any obstacles while ensuring is working cleanly and safely. Mike's crew left the yard in perfect condition. I strongly recommend hiring Mike. Doing business with him was truly a pleasure as opposed to some bad experiences I had with other plumbing companies in the past. I was not nickeled and dimed by Mike. He, in fact, went above and beyond by fixing a bad toilet for no additional charge.

Scott gave me a great estimate on flood and other storm damage that happened to my home barely a month apart. Not only did he repair damage but he improved the home by tearing out old vinyl siding and replacing with cement fiber. He coordinated carpet replacement after sheetrock and insulation was replaced. Because I live in Colorado and could not be there for these two major projects as well as all the other house repairs requested he would send me pictures via email so I could see progress. Thank You S&J Remodeling. I am so happy I found a great contractor.

Manny is awesome and extremely knowledgeable about anything plumbing related. We actually had drain issues with our sewer (on the driveway) and Manny came out, used a camera to inspect it, and gave us such helpful information about what needs to be done next. His price is extremely reasonable, and very helpful for those on a tight budget. He is professional, polite, friendly, and again, very knowledgeable about what he does. I highly recommend Aqua Long Plumbing for anyone who needs a reputable, trustworthy company!

My wife and I live in a house built in 1963 and although it has great bones, it hasn't been maintained as well over the years. With all the flooding problems Houston has experienced, I'm surprised this problem never arose before... My wife and I awoke Monday morning at 1:15AM to the sound of bubbling toilets and bathtubs/showers filling up with sewage, it was absolutely disgusting to say the least. Our house smelled like a sewer and we were certain things were only going to get worse. Thankfully, we were wrong. Chasity and David with Just Jet immediately responded to my Thumbtack request and were at our house by 10:30 Monday morning. By 11:15, they were done and our drainage system is working better than it ever has been. You'd be surprised at how much I was ready to pay for the sewage removal and the actual cost I ended up paying. Their prices are extremely reasonable considering the work they are doing and they do it efficiently and correctly! David is a Master Plumber and, as a small business owner, I understand that customer satisfaction and retention is a huge part of the business. Just Jet team, please keep up the amazing work. You are on my speed dial if I ever have any plumbing problems again... definitely my go-to plumbing experts! Your professionalism and ability to get the job done truly speaks for itself and I cannot thank you enough for fixing what was a 9 hour long nightmare!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

      Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

      • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
      • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
      • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
      • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
      • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
