I originally consulted with another attorney that had great reviews online, but once I met with his team in person, I was so disappointed. I walked away from that office and started looking for another attorney. I found and called Michael Hanten and within 5 minutes of being on the phone with him, I WAS SOLD!!!!!!! If you need a professional but aggressive attorney that can get the job done without wasting your time and sugar coating stuff, then go with Michael Hanten. #enoughsaid

As the owner of an accounting consulting services business, I have had the pleasure of working with the Amaro Firm for almost three years on Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement claims litigation. Our work together on the Deepwater Horizon spill claims process involves navigating an extensive and complex settlement agreement and representing victims of the Spill against numerous parties whom all have a vested interest in ensuring that those victims never receive economic remuneration. Throughout this arduous process, the Amaro Firm’s staff has consistently demonstrated themselves to be highly skilled, insightful, meticulous, and unrelenting in their pursuit of justice for their clients. David Miller is a model example of the exceptional attorneys working at the Amaro Firm. While collaborating directly with Mr. Miller for the past eighteen months on Deepwater Horizon Settlement claims, I have witnessed first-hand his excellent analytical skills and ability to quickly formulate an effective strategy for each individual client. Additionally, Mr. Miller’s keen eye for detail and exceptional writing skills make him an invaluable asset in virtually any legal setting. Perhaps most importantly, Mr. Miller is easily accessible at all times and is highly motivated to help each and every one of his clients and vendors succeed in any way he can. All of the aforementioned attributes are also exemplified by James Amaro, the Managing Partner of the firm. Mr. Amaro is a leader in his field and is an impeccable example of the intellect and unwavering persistence required of all attorneys involved in guiding clients through complex legal disputes. Due to the high degree of competence, skill, and overall professionalism exhibited by the Amaro Firm I would highly recommend their services to anyone in need of expert counsel with their BP Economic or Medical claims, general insurance disputes or personal injury lawsuits, especially trucking accident litigation. Ms. Bruera and I spoke directly, there was no middle person as the other attorneys I spoke to had. Her voice was calm and listened didn’t interrupt me one time . 1st asked, how my daughter was not just what happened. After meeting with her the next day which she offered to come to our home but we met at her office. She made myself and daughter feel very comfortable and after hearing the full case she right away told me what was going to happen. Her fee was a flat fee even if it went to trial no hidden fees or 40% (too high) like the other attorneys. After reading about her on the web and meeting with her she made me feel I can sit back and she will do everything in her power for my daughter. She really seemed to care about my 10 year daughter and her dog bite. We felt she was a fighter we were not just another case on her desk. We feel very confident in her ability to represent my daughter .

Michael West has been my family attorney for three separate cases in the past nine years. In the first one, he defended two of my Civil Air Patrol colleagues and myself against a fraudulent lawsuit brought about by two individuals that claimed we had contracted with them for rental of a facility when we clearly were publicly acknowledged that the facility was permitted to be used by the Hobby Senior Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol rent free. The culmination of that lawsuit was when the plaintiffs were unable to explain how a signature line on the purported rental document specifying a Wing Commander’s signature had been obliterated by a “cut and paste forgery” of one of my colleague’s signatures. Other witnesses testified as to the authenticity of our claims of being allowed to use the facility rent free without any obligations what-so-ever. The judgement in that case was that both sides went away and took nothing from each other but the judgment cleared my colleagues and myself of any obligation (past, present and future) to the plaintiffs. A second case was against a defendant that tried to claim that money I had loaned her was a gift when I clearly had a document that the defendant had initialed indicating that it was clearly a loan that was to be repaid by a certain date without interest at that specified time. The defendant contested that position but on a check that the defendant had cashed, it was clearly documented that the check was an “emergency loan.” The defendant tried to dispute that documentation but the judge would have none of that nonsense from the defendant and ruled in our favor. The defendant had to pay the judgment against her and despite several appeals by the defendant; the case was clearly a victory for us. A third case that involved a property dispute has just been completed and the ruling of the jury was 12-0 in favor of Michael’s client, Lucy Turoff. This was a matter of a purchase of property by my wife. The defendants in that dispute had unlawfully encroached on almost a ten foot swath of the property that they claimed was theirs by adverse possession and that they claimed to have had a fence delineating that claim in place for many years. That was proven to be a false claim as well as their claim of the proper boundary of the property. We had photographic evidence that such was not the case and all of the property surveys supported our position in the lawsuit. With all of the legal documentation supporting our position and video documentation of the tortuous interference by the defendants, we were totally confident in our attorney’s ability to have the jury trial (that the defendants insisted upon) won in our favor. I highly recommend Michael West’s firm (West and West, L.L.C.) for use by those who seek justice in civil case matters. Respectfully yours, Michael L. H. Turoff

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.
