Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

We had a tricky job of moving a piano downstairs- two flights with a twist on the landing between them. Metroplex Piano Movers did a great job moving the piano- fast, efficient, and no damage to our home or the piano. Fair price and good communication.

I didn't realize how heavy a piano was until we attempted to move it. Metroplex Piano's was in contact with me within 30 minutes of my request & talked me through what the process would be to get the piano moved. They came out the very next day on time & had the piano moved within 15 minutes of their arrival time. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to safely move a piano.

I submitted my request online. Then I spoke with Andy on the phone to schedule the piano move. A convenient time was established. They delivered professionally and ahead of schedule. They did an excellent job moving the piano carefully and positioning it close to the wall without any instruction from me. Obviously they have done this before many times. When they left I thought I would just move the piano a little bit more into my front room. I didn't want my wife to see her Christmas present when she was walking into the kitchen. Let's just say the piano only wiggled and didn't budge so I left well enough alone. Thank God I didn't have to move this heavy piano myself. Well worth the price which was outstanding for the work involved in my opinion. Thanks Metroplex Piano Movers!

Extremely fast same day service. They had my upright player antique piano moved from my house to my daughters in no time at all. I like that they had 4 guys for the move. My piano is very heavy but they made it look like childs play. Thank you.

I'd like to thank Danny and his crew from Metroplex Piano moving. They did a great job delivering a very valuable 120 year old piano! The owner was willing to accommodate my requests, worked my move into his schedule and gave me what I thought was an excellent rate compared to the other quotes I received on thumbtack. The crew was clean and courteous and professional. During the delivery my wife was rushed and in the confusion they did accidentally leave the bench on the truck. However, later when we realized it was missing one of the guys from the crew went out of his way to return the bench. Pianos are a very expensive and I would trust these guys to take good care of your investment.

They were the first to respond, the first to provide a quote, and when I messaged a request to call, I was immediately phoned. They were always in contact with me and arrived early for the job. They were accommodating and considerate. My piano arrived beautifully. And upon talking with the movers found out that the company raises money for families in need. Wonderful surprise and added bonus. Happy to support a business like this.

Andrew and his crew were great! I needed an upright piano and old organ moved into storage and they took the utmost care of my instruments. It happened to rain the day of pickup and they made sure everything was covered during the loading process. Both were wrapped upon getting to the unit. My blankets were a bit small and Andrew even offered his to add that additional level of padding. I would highly recommend if you need someone great that cares for your instruments as much as you do!
