Alfonso is the BEST!!! Not only is he fantastic at tutoring, but he is also very respectful and super nice. This was the first time I have ever hired a tutor, and was a bit hesitant at first...all I can say is I'm SO happy I chose him. (Tutoring was for MATH 1350-Lone Star College)

Mr. Martinsen has been my son's math (Algebra 2, Pre-Cal, AP Cal and SAT Math) tutor for many years. As an educator myself, I recognize how important a solid math foundation is to a student, no matter what subject they major in college. Hollis was recommended to us by a friend. Hollis has a very flexible schedule and will work with you until you understand the material. Here are just a few reasons why he may be a good fit for you: 1) Hollis meets his students at their level. He doesn't waste your time reviewing concepts that you already understand. He figures out quickly what you already know, and goes from there. 2) Hollis pushes his students to the next level. My son has always been strong in math, but needed clarity on several topics. He will push to deeply understand the topic. He has taken my son to the top of his class. 3) Excellent SAT Math tutor. The Math section of the SAT is not only a test of your understanding of math concepts, but also a test of your ability to perform on a timed, standardized test. For my son, he was able to provide him with test taking strategies that enabled him to get a 740/800 (99th percentile) in the spring of 2017.

I was desperate for an Algebra tutor for my son. Bonnie came to assess my son's needs and recommended a tutor best to fit them. We couldn't have asked for anyone better. We got Yoshi & he was so professional and on the top of his game that literally the next day my son aced his quiz. He went from a low D to now a high B hopefully an A by the time school finishes. My only regret is not finding The Brain Domain earlier in the year. This was my first time using Thumbtack & writing a review. I highly recommend them!!!

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Stacy is extremely bright and adept at connecting with children. She has a facility with explaining things multiple ways and will hold the bar exactly to where the child is capable of working. She has a wonderful attitude and was a joy to work with. Our daughter (age 12) worked with Stacy on Pre-AP math for 6th grade and found her support invaluable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
