India and Anna were amazing! They arrived on time and worked through packing far more than I had expected in the 3 hours I had paid to have them help. Both were courteous and professional - they even let my dogs hang out in the kitchen while they worked.

Sarah visited our cats 10 times when we went on extended vacation. She was great with our pets and kept us informed. She provided pictures at each visit, a report, and we were notified each time she arrived and departed. She made sure they were fed, had water, cleaned their litter-boxes, vacuumed their area, and brought in the occasional UPS box. I will use the service again (YHPC) and have already requested Sarah for my next trip out of town. YHPC is professional and their pet care professionals are exceptional.

Tammi is a wonderful professional dog stylist. Both of my shih tzus have been going to Tammi since they were puppies. She knows what kind of style looks best on each dog. She will not shave them and call it a day, she takes her time and gives them the best cut possible.

Deciding to board and train both our pups with Maury and WeTrainDogs was hands-down one of the most impactful, rewarding experiences and truly a lucrative investment towards the well-being of my Family that continues to pay dividends in real ways that affect our daily lives. Being able to have guests over as well as the ability to go on a walks without leash-pulling were both major obstacles for my Family that in only 2-3 sessions time (plus practice) were virtually eliminated off the ever growing list of stuff we always seemed to stress out over. The latter of the two (leash pulling) was a big deal for me as I had a traumatic leg injury last year skiing that made walking both of our dogs on the leash very stressful and kind of dangerous for my recovery with the amount of leash pulling that would always last the entire 10-15 minutes spent walking. Nowadays, I can walk both of my high energy dogs together, with distractions, sans pulling; no problem. Maury was very quick to respond to my original bid request. After a couple of phone conversations and an in-person consultation, we decided to enroll both of our dogs (a 1 year old German Shepherd and a 1.5 year old Golden/Austrialian Shepherd mix) into WeTrainDogs’ 2 week Board and Train program as we knew they would be engaged and given more attention over your standard mass pet hotel options where pets are presumably ignored (b/c of sheer quantity) and/or anxious (with multiple handlers, sheer quantity & proximity of other pets). WeTrainDogs alleviated these concerns as they only take in a couple of other dogs at any given time and provided an environment that dogs are used to; a home. Maury updated us while overseas with photos of our pups and it really felt great to know they were doing so good during the 2 weeks we were having a blast overseas. The training though, in my opinion, is really what set this experience far above and beyond expectations. We've been through classroom type training with both of our pups early on but none of the lessons ever seemed to stick except for the most basic commands; sit and lay down. I didn't realize just how far personalized attention and training geared towards your individual dog(s) can go in progressing their training and development towards canine good citizens. Though we're near the end of our sessions that came along with our original Board and Train package, we plan on maintaining their progress through follow-up sessions with Maury, along with boarding them for lengthy vacations, long into the future. Thanks WeTrainDogs!

If I could give 10 stars, our family would! Our first experience with Tami has been amazing. We will definitely be asking her to care for our senior pitt terrier again. Our fur baby has had some medical issues lately and when we left out of town for about ten days she was still sickly and underweight, needing alot of TLC. Tami/Paws n Claws has been supportive and caring even before we dropped her off, checking on our dog via text and offering very helpful and accurate advice that was instrumental in helping us nurse her to health with the vet. We opted to leave our dog at Tami's home instead of ours for the time needed, due to our dog's state of being. This was a wonderful option and just what we needed! Her home is located in a nice neighborhood with a beautiful yard and very well behaved fur babies of her own that live there. Whenever we went to her home for visit/drop off/pick up it was always easy to communicate with her and change times if needed for my convenience. Her home is always very clean and nice smelling each time I've been and very comfortable for my dog. My dog was spoiled and pampered and we received texts and pictures and updates every day. She had no problem giving our dog her meds and special diet. She treated our dog like her own family. Tami is very knowledgable, talented, and passionate in what she does and we are so blessed to have found her. I would recommend her to anyone. When we picked up our dog she was very happy and comfortable and relaxed at Tami's house and she looked great and super healthy. If you are someone who has a family pet, and looking for quality care for them when you can't be there...you don't want anyone else but Tami, Paws and Claws! Thanks Tami!

Fantastic experience! I love the process of an 8-week training program at my home versus the one-time session all other trainers offer. One time with your canine is not enough to enforce best practices, and Howard knows that well. My puppy has made huge advances and each week both she and I are held accountable knowing our next session we will be tested. I recommend Howard to everyone and anyone looking for a knowledgable, kind, experienced professional for their canine.

Tammy is very good with animals. She gave us a lot of useful information to help us in working with our dogs. The sessions worked more with the owners than dogs. Just keep in mind it will be up to the owner to do the training not the All About Dogs staff. We were wanting someone to work with our dogs and train them and for us to reinforce what they were taught. In 2 sessions this was not an obtainable goal. We are happy with our start but have a long way to go.

My dog Bruno is a young rowdy pup, very smart but also very strong willed. After attempting to watch You Tube videos and train him myself, it seemed like I was getting nowhere. I was at my wits end and discouraged. I needed serious help! I brought my Bruno to Canine perceptions after reading good reviews elsewhere and needing help with his behaviors. He went through the 6 week off leash program and graduated yesterday. 1st, I'm very happy to have him home for Christmas but the change is so noticeable! I knew he would be super excited to be home and expected bad behaviors once he left. Only one day, but the change is extreme. The Staff of Canine perceptions returned my baby not only well cared for, but well mannered! The training they gave me put everything into perspective and gave me the understanding I needed to continue Bruno's training. I could not begin to explain how grateful I am to them.

I had a crazy dog! Food aggression/ horrible on leash/ always jumped on people and greeted them with a pee puddle. I contacted Chris - and through our free consultation he assured me this is not something I have to just live with and that he could help us learn how to communicate with the dog so the dog knew who was I. Charge and we could get control. Sure enough he did. It took a few visits - more cause of us being slow learning not the dog or Chris. Chris worked magic and now we have a wonderful obedient fur baby. Thanks Chris !

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
