Robert did a fantastic job painting my master and half bathrooms. They were very dark in color to start with and now are a beautiful light gray that has lightened up the bathrooms. Definitely recommend.

She is a joy. I was pleasantly surprised by her keen sense of my preferences...She even picked up on my favorite color even though I never said it directly. She knows how to add the right touch with style/high quality but yet stayed well within my budget. I was much more productive after her first visit when she figured out what color was too "distracting/agitating" in my home office. Definitely well worth my investment. She is a keeper and will be helping me out in phases to get through the entire house-Master Plan in the upcoming months.

Aisha Lewis helped me decorate my living room two of them. worked with me and within my budget and saved me cost of many items, and I get compliments on the job she did. It works out best if the details =a color scheme are specified early on and those who are hired by the designer know how to do certain projects. Sometime they may be good in one are but not the other. Also good idea to see product first and then order online, sometimes products online look different when they arrive. Overall good job done and we are looking forward to working together again on next project

We are SO glad that we went with Dan at Design + Color for our house! He was punctual, professional and provided creative design concepts and ideas to give us exactly what we were looking for. He left his workspace spotless before he left, too. He provided excellent results for us in our kitchen and our guest bathroom. Also, he was just an awesome guy. We would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone - and will absolutely use him going forward with any other remodeling work. A+

I have used Watson Tile and Stone for two separate renovation projects in my Arlington home. I was so pleased with the quality of the first job that I did not hesitate to have them also do the second round. Whether you need help in picking out materials, finding American-made products, arranging for Habitat for Humanity to take away every usable discard, this company will do it all. My thanks to all the skilled craftsmen who took pride in their job - especially Luis for really creative tile design and James & son Jacob who put everything back together with real patience for my indecisions. When an accent color I chose turned out to be wrong, they cheerfully repainted for me. The painters carefully wrapped furniture and protected rugs and floors before and during the work. Cabinet design and staining were exceptional. All my inquiries were immediately answered. Bonded and insured of course - but these folks have an exceptional level of customer service - before, during and even after completion of work. Patsy went out of her way to make choices and ordering easy for me, and Angie escorted me through huge granite warehouses in search of the perfect slabs. You won't find this level of support in a "big box" store. I am a VERY happy and appreciative customer!

Kellie responded quickly and informed me she was very good with color, which is what I needed advise on. Once she met with me, it was just what I needed. She knows colors, how light reflection or absorption affects them and how they pull different colors from their surroundings. She listened to what I was wanting to achieve and helped me select the colors that best matched my color scheme.

Thanks to Kim, we found our general contractor, and our whole-house remodel turned out great! Kim has a real talent for color and design. She was always ready to go with samples of everything that she knew would fit our taste, as well as introducing new ideas. More importantly, Kim kept the job moving forward, organized, and on schedule as the project manager. She really pulls it all together...literally. Judy Saxon

If you are looking for a truly professional approach to your staging needs, Barb Wenzel is top notch. We selected Barb because her hourly quote best suited our needs at this stage of our house marketing strategy and additional reviews. We were not disappointed. Barb came to the house and discussed the potential of our project pursuant to our listing timeline and worked to do a preliminary staging with recommendations for finalizing the job when it came time to list the home. She will return to put the final touches on the project when we do our photography. Barb is not only competent but has excellent people skills and is very easy to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to use her again. Hire her if you need effective staging for your home or design consultation.

We hired The Home Store to provide interior design services to help update and redesign the layout of our living room and master bedroom. They also designed and renovated out kitchen and maste bathroom and did an outstanding job! They were very helpful with color and product pairing along with helping with furniture and accories for that living area and master bedroom styling. We have already hired then for our lake house and have referred them to friends. Their design showroom was extremely helpful with picking our products and pairing our colors and textures. Giacomo was patient and his experience with design and renovations helped bring the entire project together.

I am one of TAMELA Bowie's client. I simply love my eating area. I told her that I love the color orange and wanted to decorate my area in bold orange. I have gotten so many compliments on the eating area. I can't wait to have her decorate my living area with a pop of teal.

Jennifer is extremely personable which makes her easy to work with. She designed the interior for my Belize vacation home and is extremely creative. She considered the beach location when coming up with color schemes and this went a long way to set the ambience for our home. She also thought of all of the important details - night stands have to be the right height to match the bed, dresser has to be the correct width to line up with the wall mounted TV that it is under. Things that I would have never thought of. I cant recommend her more highly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
