I cannot say enough wonderful things about Ed! I was planning a travel trip for 48 kids (ages 10-16) and adults going to Dallas for a swim meet from California. As soon as I talked to Ed on the phone I knew that he was the right caterer for us! He even helped me with various things outside of setting a menu. I think the biggest reason for 5 stars comes from the 39 satisfied swimmers (and 8 coaches/chaperones) he fed! They raved about the food and said it was the best they have ever had on a travel meet!! I'd say the empty trays at the end of the meal was a true sign of delicious food! Do not hesitate to hire Ed for any of your catering needs! He's amazing... truly! Thank you for everything and you can be sure that when we are back next year, Ed will be my first phone call when setting up the trip!

Luke did a great job catering a sit-down dinner for my daughter's bachelorette weekend. He responded to my initial inquiry promptly and was easy to communicate with via e-mail and text as we planned the menu. The girls wanted to float around the pool and enjoy a few adult beverages during the day, but wanted a restaurant-quality meal that evening without having to worry about dressing up or driving. Luke arrived promptly and served a great meal with a choice of lamb chops or filet mignon as the primary proteins. The meal included a sushi appetizer, salads & sides, and a yummy dessert of creme brulee. He cooked, cleaned, and rolled with the punches with this rowdy group of 8 ladies and they all had a great time and enjoyed the meal. We will definitely hire Luke again for other dinner parties at the house.

I reached out to Jim through Thumbtack for a quote for catering our wedding reception. Within hours Jim replied with all the details I needed. Within days Jim had sent us all of his paperwork including his insurance papers, permits, menu and itemized invoice, all while we were still waiting on call-backs from "friend-of-a-friend" "caterer-on-the-side types." People who, no doubt, didn't have any of these permits or insurance or even realized they need them to work in some venues. Planning this thing was filled with indecision, date changes and even a venue change. We actually contacted 2 other cateres and NEVER GOT A REPLY. Through it all Jim was calm, accommodating and flexible. All i ever got from this guy was "no problem" and " I'll take care of it." After all was said and done we decided to cancel the reception. But I was so taken with Jim's level of professionalism and service that I felt compelled to send him something anyway. We both felt such a sense of relief and peace once we had him booked, and that's priceless. I'd like to also share one note with anyone who may have reservations about having bbq at a wedding reception, as my fiance did at first. If you're concerned that there will be bbq sauce everywhere and it will get all over your guests' hands and clothes, please don't be. Jim offers a wide assortment of meats and his food isn't prepared or served swimming with bbq. We were looking forward to serving our guests a real, bonafide, down home, stick-to-your-ribs MEAL, and not some bougie over-priced veggie platter or dry-ass chicken breast-broccoli dinner. In fact not having had the opportunity to have Jim's food was the only disappointing thing about cancelling our reception. But if his food is anywhere near the level of his service and professionalism we were in for quite an amazing experience. I will definitely have him top of mind for any event needing a caterer in the future.

Chef Jared came through for me BIG TIME! I called him on a Tuesday night at 6:00pm for a catering event on Wednesday at 11:30am for 35 people! Chef Jared came through with BBQ none the less. We had so many compliments from our customers on the food alone. We have his number now and we will definitely will be using Chef Jared for all of our business events along with some personal events.

WOW is the word that pretty much sums up our experience with Urban Taste! I am with Pensacola International Airport and we had the honor of hosting a Deck Night Party at Southwest HQ in Dallas, TX. Not being from Dallas and only having one months notice - I had no clue on catering companies and their performance. I reached out to Urban Taste Catering and Tiffany was so easy and pleasant to work with! She was able to customize the menu to fit our Gulf Coast hometown cuisine and also coordinated all of the amazing decorations and props for us! The success of our event wouldn't have been possible without Tiffany and her wonderful team and I highly recommend Urban Taste Catering to anyone in, or near, the Dallas area!

Tony was absolutely amazing from the very beginning, since the first message I received from him he showed him his professionalism, patience and his true passion for his catering business. He always responded to every single question I had with a smile, and I had A LOT. He always reassured me that he was going to make my wedding day a special day, and he did, even with some obstacles due to having a small kitchen at the venue I picked, and having very little time to setup, he made everything worked to perfection, the food was delicious, he made sure me and my husband got something to eat at our wedding! I was full just after eating the appetizers since they were of very generous size. His staff was incredible too. He truly seemed thankful for giving him the opportunity of being part of our wedding, but I'm the one that's thankful for having found Tony. You definitely get your money worth, and compared to what others caterers want to charge and for less food, you will get more than what you are paying for. I foresee and wish much success in the future for Tony's business.

Charles was very professional and responsive. He gave me a good deal and customized our menu to accommodate vegetarian options. The food quality was great and several of our guests asked for Charles' contact info. My husband also said their salsas were better than any of the locally made salsas he buys from central market. Great job! Satisfied customer.

Cari catered an open house event that we had. She did an awesome job. Prior to the event, Cari made sure to stay in contact with updates and to confirm the headcount. The food was amazing. Our guests were so pleased and gave many compliments. The Martini Glass Humus Trio was a big hit! I would recommend The Divine Dish to anyone searching for an amazing caterer.

The Bite Catering is a class act! I couldn't be more pleased with my experience working with them for my annual summer party! From my first contact with them to wrapping up the final details, they were always prompt in responding to my phone calls or email messages with answers to my questions. The Bite Catering offers a wide selection of menu items, and they did a fantastic job of creating a personalized menu consisting of a variety of hors d'oeuvres that I had in mind while keeping the cost in line with my budget. They also were very accommodating when I told them I had dietary restrictions that needed to be met. The day of the party, everything was ready on time. Not only was the food beautifully displayed, but also everything was delicious and very fresh. I was very pleased that the food was left on display for the guests to enjoy, with plenty of time to go back for more, and not removed quickly after the guests went through the serving line the first time. The extra food was nicely packaged and sent home with friends and family after the party. I experienced nothing but professionalism and quality in my dealings with The Bite Catering. I heard from numerous guests about the great service provided by all the serving staff during the party. I would not hesitate to use them again for future special events requiring a caterer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
