I appreciate the time you took to come out and give me an estimate. You were on time and you replied back so quickly with any questions I had regarding my project. You were also willing to work with us and our budget which is a huge plus. I will def. keep your # for the future as my husband wanted to go with the same Sheetrock person who built our home in the beginning. =)

Frank and his team did an amazing job on our job. We had our shower re-done and re-tiled our bathroom floor. We live in an old home built in the 1920's and hit some bumps along the way, Frank was always available to help us and Adan and Lois were so kind and worked so hard to get the job done. I would definitely use them again.

CJ helped me repaint my 3400 square foot home. Ceilings, walls everything. He was really great to work with. I called a couple references before selecting them. The price was the reason I selected them. They were well below the others and I was worried I wouldn't be happy. In full disclosure my home was empty and it probably made it easier on his crew. He also installed crown molding in my living room. I am so happy I selected them. They just came back about a month after finishing the job to clean or touch up any of the items on my tick list just like a new home builder would. When I stain my patio or instal patio blinds, I will call Carsa.

I'm not sure where to begin. Roberto answered my request for a quote very fast. After talking to him on the phone he was able to meet at my house within a couple of hours. I had issues with sagging sheetrock in my garage that was at risk of falling on my garage door (which could have been very bad). Roberto gave me varying quotes based off of the degree in which I would want him to fix the issue. I decided to go ahead and have all the sheetrock replaced and/or re-nailed properly (previous owner did nothing but patch jobs). He said it would take 3 days and him and his team were able to get it done in 2 days. Not just that, in between the project he was able to install two bathroom lights/fans that I desperately needed installed. One of the bathrooms needed electrical re-wiring to be done and he had no problems getting that done with his electrician, all within the budget. Overall Roberto was a great person to hire. We hit it off as well and I instantly felt a level of trust when working with him. He gave me free estimates for other projects I want done around our new house such as kitchen remodeling, building an outdoors covered patio, opening walls to make more of an open floor plan, and getting wood paneling installed. He will be hearing from us as soon as I can start stashing away more money for these projects. And that's the other thing, his prices are very reasonable and I don't get the feeling he is taking advantage of us as customers. His honesty and attention to detail is refreshing.

We used Opus for the renovation on our home. Our home is about 40 years old and required a lot of work and an addition. They helped us with the drawings, permits and the interior design. The professional service they provided us made us feel comfortable and safe. Their pricing was excellent and the finished product is beautiful. They were on time and and on budget within roughly 2% of the original estimate. A great expierience! We would only use Opus for any future projects and highly reccomend them to anyone! :)

Quan designed my home addition exactly the way I wanted it. She had great suggestions and was a wonderful resource. She was also very patient despite my relative ignorance of design and construction.

This is my brothers company. He worked very closely with our State Farm insurance adjuster for coverage. We got a new roof on our house with lifetime warranty, our freestanding office roof covered and even got the insurance to give us money for the remaining trees to be cut and trimmed from wind damage to the trees. Very honest, respectful Christian man!

I had 3 doors that were not sealing properly and were then leaking in to our garage or house every time it rained. Robert didn't jump to any conclusions on what might be wrong, but came and walked through it all before making recommendations for repairs. He was very flexible on time and fit our ASAP deadline. He's also come back since to do some extra sealing. Great work!

This was a complete kitchen and bath remodel including enlarging the space for the kitchen. They worked with me to design both spaces and incorporated everything I wanted included custom designs sliding barn doors and cabinets. Their cabinet maker listened to me and built exactly what I wanted while keeping my budget in mind. I found items on houzz which he was able to custom build for me. They make corrections when something didn't work and made sure that I was pleased with the finished process. I will use them again and have recommended them to friends.

We hired Edwin for a complete bathroom remodel. He built a custom vanity with marble top, framed and built a new shower, and, most importantly, installed our *heated floors*. He has an excellent electrician and a great plumber. Edwin is very affordable and worked with us at every step. He even came back to fix a problem with the toilet even though it turned out to be a manufacturing defect. I strongly recommend him!!

Curtis is very professional and courteous. We hired him to build custom modern floating bathroom vanities for an investment property. Quality seems great by photos, as I didn't touch, feel or see in person since I'm in another state. I look forward to giving Curtis and his crew more work in the future.

Mark and his team did an excellent job completely gutting and making over our kitchen. This was quite a large kitchen remodel with a fireplace being removed, an island with prep sink installed, and multiple appliances moved to new locations. It turned out absolutely beautiful and Mark always took the time to make sure they were really accomplishing my vision for the space. We could not be happier with the final outcome and are constantly getting compliments on our new kitchen. I would not hesitate to recommend Mark for any type of remodel job!

I had a wonderful experience with Hearne Construction Services for my bathroom remodeling project. Mr. Hearne was prompt to submit a written estimate and I was pleasantly surprised that the final cost ---which I thought was very reasonable--- included the services of an interior designer! She made it so much easier for me to create the Zen feel I was looking for! The construction crew was professional, punctual, and respectful. I was particularly impressed with the tile setter and carpenter’s attention to detail. This was a 5 week project and the workers made sure to leave the place clean and tidy at the end of each day. My next remodeling project is the kitchen. I definitely will be calling Hearne Construction back!

I have nothing but good things to say about this company! I needed a custom home built and they came in under budget and before schedule. I am thoroughly impressed with the work they did. Friendly and professional, Savior Contractor Management listened to my concerns, and made sure my every need was met. Though I already had the plans, I decided to make some last-minute changes, and they were more than willing to accommodate. If you need your home built from the ground up, I highly recommend this company!

Our cabinetry remodel was professionally done by someone who was obviously an experienced cabinetmaker. Everything about our job was custom, and Texas Craft made sure that the custom cabinets were perfect and the installation in our mid-century modern home was on-schedule and expertly done. Kudos to Texas Craft Remodeling. Steve Ritchey

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
