He drove more than 1 hour to install my elliptical, and he did an amazing job. Truly a handyman - someone you can trust to do the job right when he said he will do it.

What a wonderful job Integrity did of washing my walls, patio, skylights and windows. I got an offer within an hour, contacted the next day to schedule the appointment and the job was done the next day. Wonderful young man - Cody - clean appearance, great attitude, quick, professional, detailed and attentive. He even threw in a few windows without charging. They provide other handyman services as well - locks, hanging lights, painting, etc. I was very impressed and will use them again for these other services.

Mr. Blast did an outstanding job on hanging a cathedral ceiling fan. He and his partner were timely and professional. He had to work with a partial scaffold but; he made it work. After completing the task of hanging the ceiling fan he hung four mirrors to my satisfaction. I changed my mind on the height of two of the mirrors however; Mr. Blast made the adjustments promptly without complaint. Mr. Blast is highly recommended to complete your handyman chores.

I feel very lucky to find Geovanny on Thumbtack after a very bad experience with a previous contractor. Geovanny responsed quickly and managed to come to my house the very next day, showed up on time and finished the job nicely. Will definitely hire again for future handyman jobs, 5 stars!

I had some sprinkler system issues (a broken head and a buried cracked line) and my husband had given up on fixing them. So, I went to Thumbtack! I received 3 quotes; The first quoted me $75 per replacement head and $150 for the cracked line. The second quote would come out to look at the problems to provide an estimate at a rate of $39. And then Jeff offered to come look for no charge. Jeff came by the very next morning and said he could fix both issues in less than an hour so it would only be $60. The work was fast and done very well, and far less expensive than anyone else. Jeff was very nice and seemed to be a great all around handyman. I referred him to a coworker of mine the next day and Jeff is actually at his house today doing a few miscellaneous repairs. Thanks Jeff!

My project was very small--just putting a recessed lighting fixture back in a 14 foot ceiling and changing out some light bulbs. For weeks I couldn't get a handyman or electrician to agree to come out or to call me back. I guess the job was just too unexciting for them? A neighbor suggested I put my project on Thumbtack. GCG responded right away, we set up a time for them to come out, they showed up at said time, and they were in and out in 15 minutes, and super friendly to boot. I know I'll have larger projects in the future, and GCG is going to get the calls for those.

Sammy with HD handyman and construction has been doing work at my 4-Plex since the past month-and-a-half. I have gave him three Apartments to remodel he has completed two of them so far and half way through the last one. He has done sheetrock, flooring, Plumbing, kitchen cabinets, installed tubs and few other things. He did an excellent job and I was very impressed with the quality of his work and attention to details. He also helped me with Section 8 inspection and needless to say it passed in first attempt. Sammy is a good honest working man. He does what he says. Thank you Sammy for all the work and all the help that you have given me.

I was looking for a handyman to help me move a 1 BR apt on Jul 28, 2018. Franklin responded to my request with his quote. Then, I sent him pics of the furniture to moved, and we talked over telephone. On the move day, even though the move was supposed to start at 9 am, he was up early - at 7 am - and promptly responded to my call from the U-Haul as they wanted to know who will be helping me move. He responded promptly and shortly thereafter arrived on time at my apartment to help with the move. During the move, brought all his tools, was thorough in packing the delicate stuff (TV, dining table) and moved things cautiously yet efficiently. Throughout the move, our interactions were pleasant and very friendly. Moving is always a stressful experience but I was glad to have Franklin by my side. I throughly recommend him and would definitely hire him again.

Mr Lake and his crew have done several handyman jobs as well as tree trimming and lawn care for me. The were always prompt, ready and most of all honest and fair. There were times I really didn't know what I needed and thought it was worse than it was. They came in and told me and even shopped for supplies needed. So, I would refer them to everyone! He has never let me down.

Frank was great! I need a heavy mirror hung and a tv mounted in my new apartment. Once I showed him where I wanted everything he got going. We were able to continue moving my items in and out of the apartment as Frank worked diligently. I’m extremely happy I took a chance on these guys! Everything was perfect! Will definitely look into using them again for any other “handyman” jobs!!

I used Xpress Handyman for several small jobs around the house - adjusting the position of a dining room light, hanging a large mirror and placing curtain rods. They were on time, worked efficiently, and cleaned up completely. The work was high quality as well. I will use them again and have recommended them to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
