Joel isn't even done with my project yet, but I had to come here and say how amazing he is! Not only was his bid the most reasonable I recieved, he tackled a difficult existing texture problem with ideas that only a seasoned vet would have come up with. His team is extremely professional and man, do they know what they are doing! I am remodeling an older house, and I'm actually thrilled to have more work for him to do after our initial project. Hire this guy!!!

Manuel, Handyman Walls, and his crew did an excellent job on this project which consisted of removing popcorn ceiling, retexturing and patching up the ceiling and walls. When you hire Manuel, you get someone that is diverse and has the ability to do things that are beyond the typical paint job. He was able to come up with solutions for some issues I wanted to address. He was able to take out an old return air filter vent of an unusual size and replace it with a new one of a normal size that required a little structural change. He finished out the tile in a bathroom and redid the thresholds. Installed some new fans as well. All of this was done in a timely manner. Manuel is flexible, competent, has a good eye for detail, and is passionate about delivering a fine quality of work.

Fina Ross guided us through a major remodel of our master bath, giving us the unique, old world style retreat that we always wanted. We love it every day. We have even had visitors who come back to our house with friends just to show them our bathroom. Other contractors lacked the vision, creativity, artistry and know how help us, and Fina Ross stood out right away as a contractor willing to go the extra mile and bring ingenuity, craftsmanship, and cost-consciousness to a big project. She spent hours walking us through choices and drawing sketches until we had exactly the look we wanted. She wraps design skills into every step of her projects at no extra charge, and that alone puts her head and shoulders above the rest. Additionally, she is relentlessly committed to customer satisfaction. She took every one of our phone calls, responded ot all emails, made herself available for meetings at any time that was convenient for us, AND applied the same level of service to the few minor issues we had after the job was finished and after she and been fully paid.

They removed my tile from my kitchen and entrance way and set new tile. Also tiled my spare bathroom and laundry room which had linoleum. Very friendly, the floor looks great. I supplied all the materials and they supplied the labor. Now that I know they can do good work I will have many other jobs I need done. Mario checked up regularly on the work and his price was fair. To be balanced, one thing i would suggest is that they slow down and be a little more thorough with the grouting. They do go back at the end to make sure everything is good though and correct problems.

Mr. Felipe Gracia did an excellent job on our Master Bath remodel. He walked us through the process from design to completion. He was punctual and on the job every day. I would not hesitate to use Mr. Gracia or recommend him to others. We have a new beautiful onyx and tile walk-in-shower. My husband wants to shower all the time! We absolutely love our newly remodeled bathroom.

Joe did a great drywall repair job on a ceiling water leak. His fee was very reasonable and the work quality was good. He showed up when he said he would and was very efficient with his time. He did a great job keeping the area he was working on sectioned off with plastic to minimize dust and keep my kids out of his way.

Craft Built recently built a beautiful Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) / Guest House for us in our backyard and it is everything we hoped for and more! Craig, the Project Manager was on-site everyday with his crew and maintained great communication with us regarding the timeline and schedule. In the end we finished ahead of schedule and have been enjoying the additional room for family and friends all summer. We are planning a Kitchen Remodel for this coming winter and fully intend on using them again.

Chris has done a lot of work on our house and was always very professional and knowledgeable. He has helped us with cosmetic things like placing a trim around our mirrors to make them look nicer, to building a wooden headboard for my son, to fixing kitchen plumbing problems and building us a wonderful outdoor patio area! I will continue to use Mr. Spene whenever we need him.

Working with Chad and his team at Figure 3 was an incredible experience! I never expected them to go so far above and beyond on my kitchen remodel. Even though I changed my mind on things and called nearly daily, they were always there for me and so friendly and adaptive at each step. They provided great pricing options that fit me well and always presented ideas even better than I could have imagined. The final project was so clean and amazing, I would definitely use them again for future projects!

Spartan was very quick to respond to my request and even came out on a Sunday to do a hydrostatic test required by my insurance company. In all he installed 2 sinks, 2 faucets, a dishwasher, disposal, replaced shut off valves and supply lines. Replaced a gas valve to turn on/off my gas stove/oven, cleaned and replaced a toilet tank and put in all new inerds. Charged me what I thought was a very reasonable price, especially for coming out on such short notice and on a weekend. Evaluated and gave me several options to replace a tub that is leaking. We will most definitely be hiring him to do the tub replacement as soon as my husband and I determine which route we want to take on that job. He and his apprentice, son, were very easy and nice to work with and communicate with. They did a beautiful and professional job and cleaned up the job site very nicely before leaving. Best plumbing experience!

Mike was such a find! I’ve been struggling with horrible contractors throughout this entire remodel and Mike stepped in and knocked out some work I needed done as well as helped out with another miscellaneous part of the job at no cost. I HIGHLY recommend using him for any odd jobs you might have.

Yes he's very helpful. I inquired about drywall repair and he advised it could be fixed an easier DIY way. Even though I didn't use his services, he offered me great advice on how to repair it by myself which helped me save $. Thank you for your honesty and help!

Working with them was great and easy! We remodeled the whole living room, kitchen and master bathroom at a much lower price than other contractors. We are very happy with the result! They repainted the whole kitchen, added the statuary white marble countertops, changed appliances, added bamboo flooring throughout the whole living room. The entire master bathroom was tiled with marble, lights were added, mirrors, sinks, cabinets were repainted, we ordered a new tub and a shower - all was installed by the crew. It was a great experience.

We did a full kitchen remodel and Alex at Premium Cabinets helped us design our project and they provided all our cabinetry. They really help make our vision come to life. We added alot of extras like crown molding , roll out trays and a really nice trash unit that pulls out from one of the cabinets. The price was good, but the value was very high for the money we spent.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
