I have two gas hot water heater needed to be replaced due to age (15 years old). One in garage and the other one in attic. Scott, a master plumber, came the day I contacted him to take a first look and gave me a very reasonable cost of labor to do the job. He came to complete the job two days later on a Sunday. There were some unexpected difficulties during the job and Scotty's experience and expertise showed in the solutions. For example, the one in garage needs a short version of water heater due to space restriction. But the new water heater tank is more than 2 inches bigger in diameter, so it will not fit the old space. But Scotty added a 90 degree elbow at the gas line outlet to redirect the gas line away from the water heater and solved the space problem. The attic water heater was much harder to replace and Scotty handled the job with hard work and expertise. Scotty did an excellent job replacing my aging water heaters I have no problem recommending him to my relatives and friends.

I can't say enough about how happy I am regarding the service I received from C.W. Electrical Service. My job was a small job, replacing a ceiling fan with a large dining room light fixture and connecting a remote to an existing ceiling fan, but given the experiences I have had from previous electricians in this area, this was far and away the best. Chris was very professional, knew what he was doing, pleasant and the price was hard to beat. Thank you!!!

Angel was awesome! He gave fair prices, performed the work as soon as he could, gave honest feedback (won't try to get you to do something you don't need) and was a super hard worker! On top of that he is a VERY nice guy. I have read horror stories, so thankful our first time using a handyman was with Angel. We will absolutely be using him for our future needs!!

Joel and his crew did a great job removing the popcorn ceiling and repainting it. They projected that the project would take 2-3 days and they stayed within that timeline. The ceiling needed to be repainted with an oil base paint because my sheetrock was stained, Joel honored his price and repainted without any extra labor charge. Joel communicated well and even though there is no website and we did not sign a contract I would recommend Joel for his excellent work and value price.

I was very satisfied with the Onyx shower and vanity installation in two bathrooms. My rating and hiring of Felipe was based on pictures of installation of other showers that he had done. Secondly, that not many contractors are versed with the installation of this type of material. Lastly, the tile and paint work that was done was to my satisfaction. The only problem encountered was the delay in getting sheetrock workers for work that had to be done prior to starting the job.

We had the worst luck with hiring contractors for our rental UNTIL we found Mario. He and his workers were amazing! They were all very professional, punctual and they work unbelievably hard and it shows. We were so pleased, we can't wait for Mario and his crew to do our own house. We are very picky and have high standards but I would recommend him to anyone and everyone, they are that good! It is hard to find quality reliable workers these days and if you go with Mario you won't be let down.

I hired Melisa and Sabino to extend my sprinkler system to a new shrub bed I had built. They both stopped by one evening, looked at the job and offered me a very fair price that included both parts and labor. The next day Sabino arrived and knocked out the job just as planned. Great service at a fair price. We will call on them again soon to have other work performed around the house.

Pros: the fence that I hired Derby to build turned out perfect. He upgraded my posts from wood to steel and picket thickness. All for a reasonable price. Cons: construction site cleanliness was disappointing but not part of any agreement so I won't take stars away for that. I recommended this business.

Chris did a fantastic job and was very reasonable in price. I needed several small things done and he was very accommodating in agreeing to get the materials and arrange comfortable times to do the work. He furnished the labor and material. Repaired a fence post, , installed new dryer vent, caulked sixteen windows, removing and replacing solar screens to do so. He sealed and painted spots on upstairs ceiling and down stairs rooms, painted the front door, garage door jamb and replaced sweeps on storm doors. I highly recommend him and look forward to his doing two rooms of tile for me in October.

We had a rot issue with most of the joints on the fascia of our house. A good portion of the damage was obstructed by gutters or in challenging locations a good distance off the ground. Lance and I walked around the house and had an open discussion about the project. We discussed materials, labor, and schedule. After some negotiations we settled on the scope of work and cost for the job. Within days the project was in full swing. Other than some unavoidable weather delays, the project moved along swiftly and meticulously. Watching their methods and progress, it was clear Lance and his team were committed to the project. They started reasonably early and continued all day - taking only short breaks - to a logical stopping point for the day. This pattern repeated until the job was satisfactorily completed. Lance was well organized. He kept the work area tidy throughout. He was respectful of our property. If I have the need for a carpenter in the future, UpBuild TX will certainly have a chance to bid the project.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
