Urban Taste Catering did an excellent job in meeting our expectations for our 4 Day Executive event. They worked with me in regards to my budget and it didn't take away from the quality of the food or set up. The food was delicious, and the communication between Tiffaney and myself was clear, prompt, and concise. She was also able to create a gluten free menu for me that didn't lack in taste and deliciousness and it was lovely. I was nervous about using someone that I wasn't familiar with since I was planning this event from out of state and I am so glad that thumbtack was able to put me in touch with her.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Chef Tony Teems when I threw a close family member a baby shower in February 28th, 2015. This new baby is the first addition to our very large family in many years, and so I was beyond excited to throw a very special shower and deliver an exceptional experience for the guest-of-honor and her closest friends & our family. My event planner and I both worked extensively for a few months to find the perfect catering partner to deliver just the right culinary experience for the event. The planner and I spoke with so many different caterers and had so many tastings, my head was spinning! At this time, I had not yet discovered Chef Tony, so as time was getting short, I elected to proceed with a different caterer. As I continued to ponder the other caterer's menu and reviewed the total price, was just not satisfied- then, I came across Chef Tony Teems' website, ChefsLikeItHot.com. The first thing that drew me in is the variety of his catering menu. Chef Tony's skill set covers a wide range of cuisines from Traditional French to down-home country soul food! He understands the delicate culinary intricacies of so many styles of food and can offer whatever tastes your palette desires. The second thing that captured my attention was his competitive prices. After reviewing so many proposals and prospective contracts from other caterers, Chef Tony's prices are more attractive, particularly for the high quality and complex nature of the cuisines he offers. Chef Tony can work within your established budget and deliver the best value for your money. What drew me in even further was Chef Tony Teems, himself. After reviewing his menu and his prices, I called Chefs Like It Hot Caterers. Chef Tony was very charming, funny and friendly, but what struck me the most was his heightened level of professionalism and can-do attitude. Chef Tony asked all the right questions, answered all of my questions, and even anticipated questions that I did not even think to ask. Even without much time left on the calendar before the shower, Chef Tony confidently reassured me that he would deliver the type of food and service that I sought. -and he exceeded my expectations. Finally, and most importantly, the food tastes amazing! Chef Tony and his assistant chef Lacarnist Hiriams they provided us a delicious, beautifully presented spread of food that had the entire party raving! The baby shower's program started 45 minutes late because I couldn't get the guests to stop eating the food, to stop talking about the food, to stop asking questions about the food, and to stop trying to hire Chef Tony for their own special events! In summary, if you're seeking: *A range of menu options that look and taste absolutely divine * To capture the greatest value for your budget * To deal with a trusted professional whose primary goal is wowing his clients * Then book Chefs Like It Hot Caterers and Chef Tony for your event right away. Bon Apetit! P. Berry

Islanders was a fantastic addition to the wedding my team and I worked on last weekend. Carrie, the owner, worked collaboratively with both our team and the bride and groom to get great food at a great price. The meals were fresh and delicious - the guests really enjoyed them & the customer service they offered was great. If you're planning to have food trucks at your wedding they are a must!

This is actually the second time that I have been fortunate to use Cari's service. Cari's delicious quality food & presentation is the reason why I keep coming back! Some of the best deserts that I have enjoy are the cheesecake bites & the dream bars. As snack food (for I had a baby shower)..,I highly recommend the cucumbers sandwiches, they are out of this world! Cari came to my party two hours before in order to prep & have everything ready as the guest arrive. Cari's down earth personality makes a real treat for wanting to get to know her more & her artistic & delicious food makes you want more! Darla

Kaleidoscope Kitchen is Amazing!!! They catered a wedding reception for our daughter in December. We had the wedding reception at our home. There were around 125 guests to celebrate the big day. Kyla was very helpful with the menu planning process and she answered all our questions promptly. The moment we contacted Kyla everything was very professional and extremely helpful. Food set up was prompt and also clean up after went very smoothly. The entire staff was professional, organized and extremely attentive to the guest. We had an afternoon reception so we chose to have heavy appetizers and Hors D’ Oeuvres. The food was delicious!!! We got rave reviews from everyone about the food—especially the Hamburger sliders. I really enjoyed that the items we used gave options for those that were vegan, vegetarian, and also gluten free. The red pepper dip was wonderful!!! We had something for everyone. Our guest commented on how great everything was. IT made me feel great to have a party that everyone talked about and NO STRESS for me the mother of the bride! Thank you truly for making our daughters reception a special and stress free day!!! I would recommend Kaleidoscope Kitchen to anyone. Yours Truly, Happy Mother of the Bride

Roger was very professional and extremely easy to work with. I explained to him over the phone my expectations, and he had great recommendations. I am allergic to gluten and I was so impressed with his knowledge about gluten and great menu ideas. We ended up having the entire menu gluten free and not one guest complained. The food was amazing!! Every single person raved about the food. From the appetizer to main dish, it was ALL delicious! I highly recommend Soirée Chef Group.

Nate did an amazing job catering my wedding reception! He has an extensive menu to choose from. We tasted several items at our tasting and loved everything. We settled upon the blackened salmon and the southwest chicken along with several sides (which were just as tasty). The food and presentation at our wedding reception was impeccable!! We received several compliments from our guests about the food. To top it all off, his prices are better than many other caterers/hotels. Great food at a great price!! You can't beat that! I would definitely recommend Nate to anyone looking for a caterer!!

Crave went above and beyond my expectations. I have no cooking/party skills whatsoever so when I took on the task of throwing my parents a 30th wedding anniversary party I was a tad scared. Crave helped me design an entire menu along with drink pairings (our family loves their cocktails), and gave me great options for my gluten free sister. On the day of the party they were so positive, fun, and above all completely professional. My parents were so happy and impressed, plus the drinks were ahhhhmazing!!! Will def be calling them for my next party.

We had the pleasure of Phillis and her staff from Sunday Dinner Catering cater our event recently with NFL Hall of Famer Mike Singletary. The comments we received from our guests were as complimentary of the catering as visiting with Mike. We will use Sunday Dinner again and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have a professional and problem free event.

TrueBlessings Catering catered my wedding. Chef Rickey is friendly and very personable. He truly makes the clients feel at ease about their event and provided a worry free experience so that could focus on other aspects of my big day. At the reception the TrueBlessings Catering Team was very attentive to all of our guest and provided attendees for the head table and families. Most of all they worked within our budget. I will use them again for my next event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
