We needed to clear out a storage unit we had for years and hadn't even seen in 3 years. I only had a couple days to get it done and did our search on Thumbtack. I received 3 bids quickly and decided to talk to the person that bid the middle amount first. I believe you do get what you pay for. When I read his information and other reviews and after talking to him, I decided WM Pro Movers were the right fit for me. They communicated with me as the moving day began and let me know how they were doing as they had other jobs before mine. They needed to push our appointment back a little because their last job had more than was originally reported. They set a new time and showed up before I did (I appreciate people who are on time). The 2 men were great and helped me take care of my antiques wrapping them very carefully. I went through the unit quickly so I could ascertain if there were fragile items I need their special attention to. We got it all cleared out and they were very pleasant to work with. We made the 30 minute drive to our new home and they unloaded and unwrap our furniture and paintings. Overall I would recommend WM Pro Movers wholeheartedly. Trustworthy, efficient and a fair price.

I booked Spotted Frog Moving a few weeks ago and also got prompt response time from Jason throughout the process. They were a few minutes early to begin my move which was really amazing as I've often heard horror stories of movers being hours late. So these guys were not just on time but a few minutes early. They confirmed with me the day before the move. All of my items were handled with care and moved efficiently. They finished the job in just under two hours as he told me they would. Everything about having them take care of my move was as smooth as I could have hoped for. Highly recommend and will use them again when I move for sure!

Sara and her wonderful crew at Ashford Home Services were the best. We hired them to pack and move our 83 year old parents who had not moved in over 25 years. The Ashford movers were prompt, very hard working, polite, patient and understanding. Sara is very skilled in working with the special needs of seniors. I highly recommend Ashford Home Services.

Todd and Josh were outstanding in helping me solve a problem moving a couch upstairs. Previous movers had been unable to accomplish this. My staircase is small and the second floor ceiling is low. Todd and Josh were able to hoist the couch over the second floor balcony, then maneuver it past a challenging set of doors to the location I wanted it. This involved temporarily removing two heavy wood doors. I recommend them both.

I’ve moved several times in my life with several different movers. 1Source beats them all by far! I shopped around a lot for my move from Texas to Kentucky, 1source wasn’t the lowest bid but one of the most reasonable. Andy handled the booking process. He’s a very personable fellow, fun to talk with and put me at ease during a stressful time. When his crew showed up they were super friendly and polite ... really swell guys. They started quickly, assessed the task, asked a few questions and got right to work. They moved fast and worked great as a team. They really hustled! They wrapped everything, dismantled furniture, were very careful and caused no damage to walls or floors. This was a long distance move that had to be timed just right. They stayed in contact with us and arrived a half hour after us ... perfect timing. The move in was just as efficient. No scratches or dings on our stuff. These guys are excellent. Look no further.

Harder's Movers did an amazing job accomodating my last minute request (on a Sunday) to move. They also took complications in their stride, and though many came up during my move (due to the logistics of my apartment complex) they were able to move my belongings in an efficient and courteous manner. In addition, they were friendly.

Great group of guys (Brian, Nick & Robert) who took very good care of my furniture from storage to house. These guys hustle, even with the Texas heat and stairs. Brian and his team are a testament to the fact that you do not have to pay an arm and a leg for quality moving services. Will recommend Precision Movers to others moving in the future. Thanks guy!

Easy. Happy. Everything from the word go was 5-Star. I had never used Thumbtack before and was extremely pleased to find Tammy and the team at Greater Austin Moving. Tammy took great care and really listened to my specific moving needs, rather than trying to fit me in to what their moving packages were. Then on moving day, the movers were early (with a courtesy call, of course), efficient, friendly and had just the right tools based on my setup call. 5-Stars across the board. I will use them in the future and recommend them to friends and family. They even took my afternoon, small-window arrival request. THANK YOU!! - Thomas K.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Rodney and crew were very gracious, polite and careful with our belongings. They worked hard, fast snd followed directions to where we wanted stuff. Rodney was great about removing his shoes where I had carpet. These guys worked several hours on Labor Day holiday and all at a reasonable fee. Will recommend them to anyone I know looking for movers and will use Flamingo services for any help with old furniture out, new furniture in!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
