Cody and his team are fantastic. We originally hired Cody to do a bathroom tile project, but he ended up working on our entire home remodel. He was very good about sticking in our budget and making sure the work completed was quality. We would definitely work with him again.

Blast did and excellent job reinstalling the molding on the ground floor of our townhouse that was flooded out a few weeks ago. I called him and he was here the next day to take a look at the place and he volunteered to come and work all day on Sunday with another guy in order to get the job done. They had to work the entire day and they never quit. He was very polite and friendly to me and my family throughout the day. He even volunteered to come back this week to repair the vanity in my bathroom and paint the entire downstairs. Overall, you couldn't ask for a better contractor and worker. I would recommend him and his crew to anyone and everyone. We have a number of other things that we repairing or replacing and we're going to ask him to do it all.

I hired this company to clean my parents' house based on the positive reviews and was not disappointed. I don't recall the manager's name (Mark?) but he was very polite, professional, and helpful. 3 ladies came to the house and were there for about 3 & 1/2 hours. They dusted everywhere, cleaned the bathrooms, kitchen, windows, swept the floor and vacuumed. They did a good job overall but missed the area between the shutters and windows. Mark had them come back to clean that area the next day. I am happy with the work and the experience was pleasant. Will definitely hire them again for another cleaning job!

If I could give Jeff ten stars I would. Jeff arrived promptly when he said he would. I needed a new ballast installed in my overhead kitchen light, which he had absolutely no trouble doing. The light attachments were a little long so Jeff improvised it so that they didn't show through the fixture. He is absolutely very professional and friendly and I intend to use him again if I need anything else repaired.

David performed an excellent job in cleaning, recoloring and sealing my kitchen, foyer, and bathroom tile. He also sealed the wall tile in my bathtub/shower area. The results are beyond my expectations and at a very affordable cost. As David was moving a potted palm from my foyer to the dining room, the lip separated from the rest of the clay pot and crashed to the wood flooring. He promptly cleaned it up, examined the flooring to ensure there was no damage, and then discounted approximately $40 from my quote to pay for a replacement pot. This incident was in no way his fault; in fact, it appears the palm was overdue for re-potting in a larger container. Nonetheless, he took responsibility. Moreover, David offered to caulk around the toilet and tub to ensure a tight seal and is coming back after the weekend to do this at no additional cost. I am extremely satisfied with AAA Tile Masters and would absolutely recommend this company to others.

After hurricane Harvey I hired a contractor to repair my home from the damage the flood caused. The contractor was so inept and his workers literally destroyed my home. The drywall had holes and gaps in it. The electrical outlets were dislodged so badly that the covers couldn’t even go on them; they used a sprayer to paint the interior rooms and the paint got all over the crown molding and the ceiling and after I fired him I was left with no kitchen or bathrooms. Chris came in to initially put in a door for me and he ended up saving me and my family from having to endure several more months of living in a construction zone. He painted the kitchen cabinets(after the previous contractor said it couldn’t even be done) he installed all of my appliances, he did all of the trim and baseboards in the entire house, he hung all the light fixtures and ceiling fans, he hung wallpaper, he installed and painted all of the doors both interior and exterior, he painted the ceiling and installed vanities in the bathrooms he essentially completed my entire home and fixed everything the previous contractor messed up. He even installed cameras outside of my house and a new doorbell. He worked long hours right before Christmas so that we could have an operable kitchen to cook dinner in for the holiday then he came back early after Christmas to finish up everything before the new year came in. I am eternally grateful to Chris for his diligence and patience and perfectionism. He handle my home as if it was his own. I would highly recommend Chris and I now consider him as part of my family because of the compassion he exhibited while working to ensure my home was completed in a timely manner and with such excellence.

I called Handy Dude Service to install a new kitchen sink, disposal, and dishwasher to replace my existing ones. Not only did they show up within 24 hours' notice, the end result was exactly what we needed! During their work, they went the extra mile to make sure our concerns were met, and walked us through the installation once it was complete. I was so impressed, in fact, that before they left, I presented them a list of other projects I have in mind for the future. Definitely call Handy Dude Service. A very cordial, professional, and versatile team.

Eddie and his crew with Elite Property management not only did a excellent quick job on installing new carpet in my bedroom but installed baseboards, sheetrock and managed to pull a old vanity out of the wall and re install it without damaging it. If there was a 10 star Eddie would get it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! I have already made multiple referrals .

I had hired a contractor from Thumbtack to lay some tile in my bathroom. When he was finished, I went into the bathroom and noticed to horrid job he did with the cutting of the tile around the baseboards! I reached out on Thumbtack once again, and found JC Carpentry to lay some quarter rounds to cover the awful job. He came out and assessed, and we came to a solution. Let me say, he did a FANTASTIC job, was priced just right and was fast!! Thank you so much JC, you have all my future work for finishing carpentry. 😊

Zach came to change out a broken bathroom vent fan and re-seal a window that leaked during the last storm we had in Houston. He was very knowledgeable and I appreciated that he cleaned up the area after installing the vent fan. I also appreciated his honesty when he saw some deferred maintenance items but didn't pressure me into fixing them right away, but explained when a good time to fix them would be. His price was very fair.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
