Holiday Sit-down dinner for 14. Prime rib, shrimp cocktail, tossed salad, twice baked potatoes, green beans with silvered almonds, rolls and mini strawberry shortcake. Food was delicious, a little slow as to not being accustomed to my kitchen, not knowing where things were and not asking but with this large of dinner party it was hard for caterers to get my attention. Caterers only big problem was not leaving early enough (after we discussed it) to get through the extremely heavy traffic and arrive on time which threw dinner off from scheduled time. Since everyone attending were friends, it just worked out that we had more time to talk but it caused the caterers to cook and reheat dinner items because they had gotten cold waiting in traffic getting here. It ended up working out well, a good time was had by one and all and as I early mentioned, the food was delicious- far above what we had expected. We will highly recommend Lunas catering and also will use them again in any future catering needs.

We chose to have cupcakes in tulip cups for our wedding and they were incredible. We are STILL getting compliments on how delicious they were! Wedding cake and dark chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting - yum! I actually received a text the day of our wedding being notified the delivery driver was in an accident but that the cupcakes were okay... which is top notch service but I was more concerned about the driver! Haha - but they promptly delivered our cupcakes regardless of what happened and for that I am grateful. The cupcakes of course arrived in one piece and were incredible. Thank you guys for still arriving on time and I do still hope your driver is okay! I wasn't worried the slightest because I trust you all. I appreciate your quality business so thank you a million times over. - Shaina & Alex

As a mom making changes to a more healthy lifestyle and struggling to meet all the family's needs with food choices, I could not be happier than with Chef Roy. He empowered me with the basics of cooking different ways of using veggies; multitasking at once in roasting, blanching, sauteing. He also showed the difference in cooking medium rare and medium well steaks as well as making the salmon so w o n d e r f u l--All in all, every bite has a story to tell with his amazing ways, for instance making the mashed purple potatoes taste heavenly with garlic and grape seed oil, the various roasted versions. I remember the how and plan to progress in experimenting more than I ever thought I could! No more casseroles with cream of chicken or mushroom soups added! Reading how to do it is one thing but seeing how to make it work in your OWN kitchen is another thing! Just tell him what you want and he will tailor to your needs. Just make sure you are on the same page with the scheduling and pay. Have a clear cut plan written in advance to assure all is covered. That was the only part a little confusing. Thank you, Chef Roy!

We used Diva B's Kitchen to cater our wedding reception and when I say she went above and beyond!! The cuisine was stellar in taste and presentation. She was attentive to our request and timely in responding to them as well. The absolute icing on the cake was her affordability. I will definitely be using Diva B's Kitchen again.

Helen catered our office St. Patrick's day lunch with a buger bar. Everyone raved about the food and her non-dairy green ice cream was the biggest hit of the day!

The foods at Mark's catered party were so fresh and produce brightly colored. His oyster mushrooms & grilled shrimp where mouth watering. My favorite was the fragrant peanut sauce which was - figuratively speaking - the icing on the cake.

For more information, please contact us back with more information about your event. Please visit our website or Facebook page for more information. To give you a little background on us, we're the Maclaskeys: A family of four who have built and renovated much of our newest venture -- Dimebox Ballroom, a venue space by hand. We're a family of artists (quilters, graphic designers, ice sculptors, chefs, painters, and sculptors), and we work to infuse every aspect of the space with our vision and artistic sensibilities. The daughters, Cheyne and Chase, have lived in the Austin area for over a decade where they would often commute back to their hometown of Montgomery (just north of Houston) to help run events at TJ and Carol's event space, Fire and Ice Hall (a beautiful, large tin building that was once a Sinclair Oil pumping station at the turn of the 20th century). In the late summer of 2013, the Maclaskeys sold their property and fulfilled a longtime dream of moving to the Texas Hill Country and continue the family business with Cheyne and Chase at the helm. The place would be Dimebox Ballroom, at Fire and Ice Hall, in beautiful and historic Georgetown, Texas. We are planning to have three venues, Fire and Ice Hall (the largest), Dimebox Ballroom (the mid-sized) and Gypsy Camp (the outdoor space). Dimebox Ballroom is the first of these venues to be finalized and was ushered in with a very special wedding -- Chase's!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
