I worked with Mike to have some Christmas lights installed on our roof and around some tree trunks. Mike was stellar in his communication and his level of service is second to none. A very personable guy and more importantly, very detail oriented which is hard to come by these days. He truly treats the project as if it's his own home and now we're looking into other landscaping projects that I'll know he'll do a great job on. Highly recommend Mike and his crew!

Wonderful experience! We needed something as simple as getting plastic brackets off the roof line that were left on from Christmas lights. Able to schedule on our time and get it complete before HOA complained!

We were very happy with the results after Angel painted our single story house. He is an honest combination of quality and value. He met with us two or three times before we scheduled. He repaired, prepped (including pressure washing), and then painted. His prep was so thorough that two of my neighbors mentioned it. He did an excellent job with the exterior repairs, which included carpentry on the siding and roof soffits. The whole process took some time, a couple of weeks, due to spring storms and unexpected but necessary repairs (a storm-downed branch damaged the soffit) and it was worth it. Angel really takes his time to do it right, and has pride in his work. We took a chance hoping that the job quality would be worth the value, and there is no doubt that’s the case.

I love my gutters! It took forever to get them because of the rain and my schedule but they were patient and added me first once my schedule cleared up. I was skeptical of the color when she showed me the swatches, but she picked the one she thought would be best and it match my color paint PUUURFECT! They know their stuff about Gutters! They are professional. I could only afford half the house or the problem areas first bc it is a brand new house and they got them done in about 4 hours. They are not about overcharging or GETTING OVER, very honest people and tell you the real, you may want this, you don't need that. With this new home, I've had contractors overcharge me, so they were a breath of fresh air. Friendly, Professional, Fast, Quality Work ---- I just love my gutters you will too!

My husband and I were introduced to Ruben's Handyman Service through our NextDoor Neighbor forum. On a ridiculously hot and humid summer day, Ruben got a Texas style workout, installing wood flooring in a large closet in our home. This Army veteran receives a 5-star rating for his service to our country and for his skillful workmanship! Nice job, Ruben!

My experience with Dennis is limited to a roof repair, so I can't speak about his overall roofing expertise. But, in my experience as a long-term homeowner (of an old home), repairs are usually more annoying to contractors than a large re-roofing job,. So, if they're willing to take on a small repair and do it right, they'll do a good job of a new whole roof. Dennis not only diagnosed and fixed the problem correctly, he took care of other annoying and related problems that he discovered as a result of fixing the leak. He also consulted with me on a number of other issues he noticed, but was at no time trying to do a hard sell. He could have, as did other contractors, apparently, just fixed the leak and walked away from the other problem. Of course, he was completely honest with us about what he found, he was creative and timely with his problem-solving, and was affordable. Finding a contractor who is smart, honest and patient enough to figure out what the real problem is (there's always a problem in an old house) is a lucky break! I have no doubt that Dennis and his crew would do a great job on a new roof. And I know for sure he'll do a great job on repairs. We did have a slight problem with communication. We were both probably a little at fault in that regard. How, with so many ways to connect (email, phone, text), it gets harder for us all to reach one another, I can't figure out. But all's well that ends well. The communication problems were minor and on both sides and ultimately don't detract from my 5-star rating. Hire this guy!

They were friendly, polite, quick and knew what they were doing. After they got the old roof removed, more damage was found. They showed me the pieces they removed and fixed it up correctly. They even cleaned up all around afterwards. Looks great now!

This was my first time using Thumbtack and I must say, I’m glad I did. Within minutes we had several responses to the repair we needed done. (A leak that was appearing on the ceiling in our master bathroom.) J&L Concrete and Roofing responded to our request and we set an appointment for an estimate. After climbing into the attic, onto the roof and inspecting the ceiling, Jose discovered the cause of the leak as well as spotted several shingles missing and or in need of replacement. He provided images as well as a detailed explanation upon inspecting. He also reassured me that there was no mold and no rotten wood, which were our biggest concerns. He replaced two roof boots, inspected the entire roof and replaced the missing/damaged shingles. Jose was thorough and efficient. We are thankful for the work Jose and Dulce provided. They were responsive to all communication, on time to both appointments (estimate and repair), accommodating to our schedule and did quality work at a fair and affordable price. We have some other projects in mind and will use them again in the future. A++ Local business!

He tore out my fireplace and sheet rocked and textured the new wall, he replaced my small porch poles with larger ones and found and repaired a leak on my roof. I would highly recommend Vic Searcy of Searcy Construction to anyone. His bid was very reasonable. He is a crew of 1 but works like 10 men. He does beautiful work and will come back and make it right if you are not happy. I say this because after he was done and paid out we primed the new wall and the seams seemed to pop out after we primed. This was not due to him making a mistake - it really could not be seen with the texture on the wall until the wall was primed. I texted him and told him about what happened and came out the next day to look at it and he repaired it within 2 days. This contractor does not leave you even after you have paid in full - HE WILL MAKE IT RIGHT! I understand the fear you may have about hiring a contractor but with Searcy Contruction your fears are unwarranted. I would hire again. In fact I would not seek any additional bids. He is trustworthy and will do a great job for you.

I live in Georgia but my house needed repairs in Texas. I hired M and Y because I had hail damage to my windows and I need to sell my (rental) house ASAP. They ended up painting the exterior of my house (3200 square feet), replacing rotted wood trim, and glazing my windows. It looks great!! Once I hired him online, they began working right away. They pressure washed the first day and let it dry. Within 2 days, the complete job was finished. They finished before I made it to Texas! I would definitely use this company again.

I recently had My Friend's Roofing replace my roof, I'm excited with the finished product. Professionally across the board as far as the work, they worked within budget, and they know their product. That gave me options to work with them, I've never worked with an contractor with the same enthusiasm as My Friends Company.

1st of all thanks you guys! The roofing crew from Texas Energy Experts performed beyond my high expectations. After shopping around and then getting my Spanish tile roof put up, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I got the best value for my money by choosing this stellar outfit. This is who you go to when you need a roof put on the right way with non of the bs that comes from other companies.

Adriel did our gutters about a month ago and we are so satisfied with the work that was done. He also traveled from Austin to San Antonio just to educate us a bit more on the type of gutter that would best work for our metal roof while staying at a reasonable price. Thanks Adriel!

I believe GreenForm is new to the greater Austin market, and after meeting with the owner Bernard, I knew this was my roofing contractor. Quality contractor with great work ethic and integrity. All of the above. Every phase was handled on time and as promised, phone calls were always returned. They not only did the metal roof but installed a new patio with some "remodeling" on the back of the house. Also did a great job in helping with insurance and then a reasonable bid. Always cleaned up every day. A special thanks to Dakota and Raul for a job well done. There is no question I would not only call them for another job but certainly recommend them to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
