What do you love about your job?
I love helping people learn to sing or play an instrument, and when I'm able to find the right instructor for each student, it makes me feel it's all worthwhile. I believe that learning music is a great addition to anyone's life, whether the student is learning for their own enjoyment or a career in music. So when a student (or a parent) calls me to say they or their child is having so much fun learning, it makes me feel like I'm making a difference in people's lives.
What or who inspired you to start your own business?
I started teaching piano to friends when I was in elementary school, and I knew then that I loved seeing someone learn. During college, I began teaching professionally, and before I graduated, I had more students than I could take myself. So I asked one of my adult intermediate students to take the beginner students, and thus, the idea of Melody Music Studios was born. I later expanded to all instruments and voice and in 2001, opened up in the cities across the country.

We have just finished our 6th lesson with John. My 5 year old daughter is taking piano lessons and I am taking guitar lessons. John is always on time, is always prepared, and is always eager to teach. My 5 year old can barely contain her excitement when he comes over. I am amazed at how much she has learned at such a young age. John encourages family participation during her lessons which is something that I fully agree with. Music in our house is a family affair. He has an obvious compassion for teaching young children and it is very obvious with the method he uses to teach them. He makes music fun. I am a middle school teacher, and would highly recommend him as a music teacher with your children too. As an adult student in guitar, John is always listening to my wants and needs. He is teaching me with a style that will benefit my ultimate guitar playing goal, and addresses my learning style carefully. I would highly recommend him as a guitar teacher too.(show more)
Currently, I'm the Manager of Tye's awesome band, Fifty Dollar Dynasty. Tye's guitar style is simply amazing! His band won the 2013 Texas Motor Speedway, Fast Track To Fame Contest and they played live in the Big D NYE show (think 40 thousand live fans and broadcast live on TV into 12 states and 70 markets). Taking guitar lessons from someone who knows how to play is cool. But taking guitar lessons from a future rock star is...priceless. Tye is low key and has not let the success go to his head. He's focused on helping others learn the craft which is an unusual trait for an up and coming rock star!(show more)
I would like to send this letter in support of Tom Lopez and his music lessons through the Universal City Music Studio. My son Jacob Bissell has been a student of Tom's since his days in the band at Kitty Hawk Middle School. At that time, Thomas was teaching Jacob drum techniques to supplement the lessons at Kitty Hawk Middle School. Jacob ended up his Middle School tenure as an honored/awarded musician with a great foundation in music. Jacob moved on to Judson High School, and auditioned for the marching band. He won a spot on the Judson Drum Line as a bass player. He held this position for two years, even though he could have moved to "snare position" his second year, but stayed on bass to help the Director. Around this time, Jacob was starting guitar lessons with Mr. Lopez. After two years with the Varsity Judson High School Band, Drum Line, Jacob decided to take a break from the marching band. At this time, it was found that Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) needed a percussionist. An audition was arrainged with YOSA, and Jacob was awarded a percussion seat with the Philharmonic Orchestra (YOSA's number one performing orchestra). He held this position with YOSA during his Junior and Senior years at Judson High School. His Senior year of high school, Jacob had to be in the music program to be eligible for YOSA, so he talked to the orchestra director at Judson HS. The Director needed a bass for the orchestra, so Jacob accepted the position. He started the semester in the Beginner Orchestra. With his excellent musicianship, he learned the instrument and was moved to the Honors Orchestra. He did receive honors for this position. All this time, Jacob had continued taking music lessons and having recitals with Thomas Lopez. Jacob had continuisly been a student of Tom's since middle school at Kitty Hawk. Now it was time to think of college. Jacob had thought that "Music Thearpy" was an area of study he wanted to pursue. Looking at the information from Texas colleges, only two in the state offered music therapy. One was in Houston, and the other was the University of the Incarnate Word, in San Antonio, Texas. After applying, and going through Music School auditions with the Director at Incarnate Word, he was awarded a Music School scholarship and an academic scholarship. With the substantial scholarship money, he accepted the spot on the Incarnate Word music school roster. I would like to congratulate Thomas Lopez for instilling in his student Jacob, the musicianship needed to advance to the level he has. He is active in the Incarnate Word Chorale, so he is learning about another instrument- his voice. Jacob is active in two bands- Disposable and 16 Psyche. As well as writing music, singing (fronting Disposable), he is currently teaching himself piano. I want to add links below to several of Jacob's performances. If the links get lost, you may find performances on YouTube by searching the names of the groups, and looking for "YOSA presents Carmina Burrana," where you'll see Jacob's senior slide on the screen behind the orchestra, at the beginning credits. While in YOSA, Jacob was with the first group to perform in the new Tobin Center, appearing twice about a month before Paul McCartney played the venue. Jacob has performed with nationally known artists while in the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, and went on tour to Canada with the organization. Thanks again Thomas, for bringing out the best in your music students.(show more)
I have two boys and Austin has taught them both at their school and out of our home for three years. Austin is an amazing teacher. My kids love him. He's super cool and super nice and great with kids. He teaches one son electric guitar and teaches the other a little guitar and a lot of voice and singing. He helps them perform solo performances at their school twice a year and comes to their performances and helps them. When they have a lesson at school my kids feel like the coolest kids around because their teacher is young and fun. All the kids at school gather around to watch and give my boys "thumbs up" signs. Austin sends them recordings to practice and emails them messages and notes about what to work on. Many times he will stay late in the lesson working with the kids or jamming with them. He even showed up at my 9 year old's birthday party and "jammed" for the kids. They LOVED it. BEST MUSIC TEACHER EVER.(show more)
My daughter has been taking guitar lessons for over a year and singing for the last 3 months with Paul. He is a amazing instructor. He is extremely down to earth and all around good guy! What I love about Paul is that he takes so much pride in his work! His prices are so reasonable and his schedule is always accommodating! He's the best!!(show more)
My daughter has been taking lessons from Mr. Olson for about two months now. She has made amazing progress so far, from nothing to playing chords and a few songs. Mr. Olson is able to redirect and focus my 7 year old to keep her on task and learning the lesson of the week. He certainly has the patience to teach young children. His lessons are tailored to each student to keep them progressing. As with any child, my daughter was very enthusiastic when she asked to learn guitar, but that interest waned after the first few weeks after she discovered that this takes real work to learn. Mr. Olson has managed to keep her progressing and brought back her interest in continuing her lessons. His style is encouraging and corrective without being negative, always praising the students efforts. He also has an amazingly advanced knowledge and understanding of teaching theory for an instructor only in his early 20's, much better grounding in education fundamentals than many seasoned and highly degreed teachers I know. His level of understanding of how to teach shows in the progress my daughter has made and respect she has for Mr. Olson. He is also a very competent and accomplished guitar player in his own right. For anyone looking to learn guitar I highly recommend you check out Daniel Olson, I could not recommend him highly enough.(show more)
Your service provided two professionals in my area that taught piano lessons. Our quest to find a piano teacher for my son was made a lot easier through your service. Although I did not get as many referrals as I thought I would, we did end up going with one of the referrals and are glad we did! The staff and owners at Pepper's were friendly and helpful. My son liked his teacher and wants to continue past the initial complementary trial lesson.(show more)

Great introduction for us both. Art was able to build on what I already learned and we discussed a path for moving forward. We talked technique, positioning, theory and other aspects of types of music learning. He is very friendly, likes to laugh and makes learning fun. Greatly enjoyed spending an hour with him today and look forward to the next lesson. Recommended for beginner, intermediate and master level guitar players.(show more)
