I came across Survival of the Fittest during a critical time in my life. I was in a transition period both personally and professionally and needed a fitness regime to help me tone up and reduce my stress. A friend recommended Donna Gordon, owner of Survival of the Fittest Personal Training. Coach Donna and I clicked from day one. During our 5 am sessions, she was prompt, cheerful and always motivated me to reach my goals. Coach Donna helped me recognize poor eating habits that were sabotaging my results. Overall, this was an excellent experience and Coach Donna is an awesome trainer that will get you the results if you put in the work.

i have had several trainers in the past. Jim is the only one that shows up rain or shine and helps me achieve my weight and fitness goals. Workouts are tough but never the same. I am amazed at how my balance and coordination have improved. I would recommend Swift Performance Training for those that are serious about physical health and fitness. He can get you results.

Chris is simply amazing. His knowledge of anatomy is phenomenal. After no success addressing a sciatic nerve condition with doctors and other trainers, Chris created a training program that for the first time alleviated the pain. I recommend him for any age - he has worked with my 90-year-old mother-in-law who saw remarkable improvement in balance and strength. He is professional, fun and incredibly creative in formulating personal workout regimens. - TerriD

I was very surprised to see the results from Rosemarie's tests, that I don't eat as healthy as I should. I got some great tips on improving my diet and gained a powerful resource, since I believe that I alone, am responsible for my health. Doctors these days know very little about prevention & diet, so I appreciate solid guidance & scientific proof of what can be improved.

I have been working with Laurie for over 5 years now. I have always found her to be easy to talk too, and have enjoyed building a relationship with her. She is thoughtful and I feel really cares about me and my overall well-being. I rely on her for information regarding all things from exercise to nutrition to random thoughts that may or may not be effecting my health. She does a good job of explaining ideas and processes so I can understand how they work and how they will affect me. I feel more empowered and in control of my health because of Laurie. Thanks!!

Kris is an excellent trainer. Achieves a great balance of maximizing results without causing injury - extremely cognizant of health issues of each client. Focus on delivering proper form. In addition to hitting my goals, Kris ensures that workouts target areas that are important for good general health (i.e., legs, back, core). Good attitude and motivational. Changes up the workout to keep it interesting and the body guessing.

Ms. Fikes has a masters degree in health and kinesiology, a PE and health teaching degree plus certifications in Pilates, CrossFit and aerobics. She has been a trainer for over 13 years and her experience and professionalism have helped me obtain a healthier body. I highly recommend her as a trainer for any age.

Excellent massage therapist, MT CHCP Health care professional, listens carefully to your symptoms ailments injuries to help find the core of your pain -steadfast. Prerequisite: heating elements to help calm relax and soothe sore muscles in tension area and gently massaged my excruciating pain away. 100%! Zeroed in pain-zone with Swedish deep tissue massage -saving my life, my money and saving time at doctors offices prescribing a bandaid script -not a solution. Three years later I still have no pain! No pain killers. I am grateful to David. I truly believe he saved my life. I book massages regularly now with him when in San Antonio, TX

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a health coach?

A health coach is a service provider you can hire to help you realize your wellness goals. You can hire a health and wellness coach to guide you through life changes, keep you focused on weight loss or fitness goals, help boost your mental health, and more. Many health coaches work with their clients for set periods of time as the client moves toward a measurable goal. Wellness coaches come from varying backgrounds, and may have different areas of focus depending on their education and training. Research potential coaches by reading their reviews, researching their academic and personal backgrounds, and learning about any certifications they have earned from coaching institutes. Often, health and wellness coaches sell coaching packages ranging from three to six months or longer, depending on the client’s needs. The average national cost for an individual health coach session ranges from $60 to $90, although prices may range as low as $30 or up to $130 or more, depending on your location and the coach.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.

What is a holistic wellness coach?

When you want to reach new heights with your health and wellness, consider hiring a holistic wellness coach. Much like a health coach, a holistic wellness coach is focused on your well-being and meets with you in one-on-one sessions to help you identify and reach your targeted goals. A holistic wellness coach will typically have you take all components of your life into account when working to achieve your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, a holistic wellness coach will not only offer recommendations for your diet and exercise, but also discuss your emotional health, your work/life balance, your spiritual side, and each area of your life that affects your ability to follow a nutrition and fitness plan.

Although they are highly motivational and often can help clients achieve great results, holistic wellness coaches are not professional health care providers or registered dietitians. Different institutes and training centers provide certifications for holistic wellness coaching, so be sure to research your coach and read their reviews to understand more about their techniques and training.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
