I hired Eddie to do my front and back yard along with removing debris left from the previous owners of my new home. He also pulled some unwanted bushes. I am 100% completely satisfied with the work he did. It was pretty warm outside but he knocked it out pretty quick and his price was very fair. I will be referring him to a family member and would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. Hard worker and very easy to do business with. Thank you Eddie my friend !!

Professional and efficient. Came promptly and inspected the damage to my patio sliding door glass rather than giving an off-the-cuff estimate site unseen. He checked on availability of glass and gave an estimated time frame for completion. I contacted him that evening to accept his quote. He picked up the replacement glass the next morning, arriving at my home by 10:00 am. Everything was completed and cleaned up by 11:30. Less than 24 hours from initial contact to finished job. I will definitely call him again for any needed repairs.

Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

Although not all items are completed at this time, Mr John Allen, the owner, is accommodating and fair minded. He and his crew can think on their feet and solve unanticipated problems. Working in an old home always presents challenges, so far, he is managing well. We had to add on some charges for additional work we wanted, John was fair. Give him a shout for an estimate.

Orlando replied to me right away he was very professional and courteous. I had part of the gutter hanging from the storm so he realized it was urgent. He came out the next day and by the time I got home he had put it back on. He even went to store to get more supplies and cleaned up before after himself. . The value was great and I appreciated how he handled everything and how he communicated with me. I’ve been trying to find a reliable handyman for awhile now so felt great this worked out!

Andy, David, and Greg were absolutely instrumental in making my family' dreams come true! They were able to do in just a two weeks what would've taken others months to get done! They were able to completely remodel my kitchen, scrape, resurface, re-acoustic all the ceilings and walls in my home which includes vaulted ceilings and repainting the entire 1,300sq ft home. While also getting a new 35yr roof installed! I couldn't believe it! All this in just 2 weeks! They delivered an incredible service at a competive rate! My wife and I couldn't be happier! Thank you all so much! I'll definitely be hiring them again when I'm ready to renovate the exterior of my home!

I can't say enough how happy I am with the services I have received from Pablo at Affordable Outdoor Structures! They are prompt, professional, courteous, and thorough. The work has been well done and in all cases sooner than estimated. They provide written estimates, which not all companies do, and their prices are competitive. I have had several home improvement projects, and will have more in the near future, and use Affordable Outdoor Structures every time. I have recommended them to friends and to our parish call list. Haven't yet found anything they couldn't or wouldn't do. My first job was so small, other handy man companies wouldn't return my call, but Pablo at Affordable Outdoor Structures did, and they have gotten my loyal business ever since. Couldn't be happier!

Towers Contractors was amazing. My in laws house had 4 layers of shingles on it and Towers Contractors took the time and put in the hard work to take all the layers off, assess the roof for damages and put on the new single layer of shingles. Its a huge relief when you know the company you hired will go the extra mile to make sure everything is done properly and fix the bad work others left behind. We will absolutely without a doubt be calling Towers Contractors for all of our future house work at my in laws and my future home. Thank you Towers.

Thank you to the owner Steven Shauer for his skilled work and unbeatable prices. We recommend him to anyone who is looking for an honest and experienced company. Mr Alex and his Team did an outstanding job for us. He did the following work for us: *Installed two Motion lights outside. *Took out a old set of Slide doors and installed a new set that has blinds between the glass. The the quality of work was EXCELLENT! *We have old double front entrance doors that needed redone badly. We were loosing air and when wind was blowing outside you could feel the wind coming in to the house. he re-did all around the door with weather stripping, etc and as he had said, stopped 90% of the wind from coming in the house. * They installed for us a new front door lock that includes combination numbers for entrance verses keys. They were very nice to take the time to teach my wife how to use it. They did the same with installing a video security door bell for us. *They also did a EXCELLENT job for us wiring up a large 10'X24' new storage shed that we have. They placed new Florence lights for us and electrical outlets in it. Mr Alex and his Team are true professionals. They do excellent work, they are trust worthy, respectful people to have around, and yet... there rates for work well done are very reasonable. Based on the types of work he did for us as mentioned above, I highly recommend the Alco Painting/Home Remodeling Co. Eddie Garza San Antonio, Texas

For all you people who need cabinet work, you could never go wrong in hiring Tony Lopez. This man is the epitome of a true professional. Our cabinets are so beautiful that my wife and I sat here admiring his work. Our son was calling his friends bragging about what a great decision I had made when I hire Mr. Lopez He is a genuine individual who gives more than 100% to his customers. I was impressed in seeing how meticulous he is in every aspect of how his cabinets will function once he leaves your home. Mr. Lopez should be very proud of himself not only as an individual, but as the impact he has on his customers with his professionalism. Hiring AFL Enterprises (Tony Lopez) was the best business hire that I have ever made.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
