Patty wasted no time in reaching out directly, it was as if she knew I was feeling defeated! She took the time to address all my questions and concerns over the phone on a Thursday evening. I met with her the following day for a personal 1x1 training session and I was sold! Her staff is friendly, professional and knowledgable and her studio is spotless! I'm looking forward to taking this journey with Patty by my side.

Victoria has been training my husband and I for about a month now...my husband who always talked about needing to exercise just never did...he needed someone to be accountable to. He has not only lost 10 lb but has lost inches as well...where I was going to a gym before...I now can workout in the privacy of my own home which my husband also prefers...Victoria has got me working muscles that even all those machines were not working...she knows her job and she gets to know her clients and builds a workout plan that suits your needs...she's also certified in nutrition...I encourage anyone who has tried and failed to give her a try...

Keyuna trained me for 6 months with great exercises that improved my strength, endurance and flexibility. Additionally she helped me come up with meal plans and gave me nutrition advice that helped me lose significant weight that I could continue indefinitely. she worked with my schedule, provided equipment and was open to different locations when the weather was nice. I wish I hadn't moved away. I haven't met another trainer as positive and motivating as well as flexible to my crazy nurse schedule.

I’ve only been working with Donna for a short time, but I’m already seeing results! I can already lift more weight and do more reps. She creates unique exercise plans that always keep me on my toes (literally!). I know that Donna genuinely cares about my success. She’s always accommodating with my schedule and even spends extra time with me to make sure I get the most out of my training. Donna always greets with me a smile from ear to ear. She’s truly a pleasure to work with! She’s a staple at the Rackspace gym!

I have been training with Allyson when she first became a Personal Trainer in 2015. I started at 287lbs, 42% body fat. I am now currently weighing 172lbs, right about 16% body fat and it isn't over yet! Ally has helped me through the toughest obstacles, but made me feel like I was capable of anything. She is truly a life saver.

Paul has truly exceeded my expectations. I had been hitting the gym hard for two years straight, and did not know half of what I’ve learned through Paul’s nutritional information and fitness training. I would highly recommend Paul to anyone ready to make a change to a overall “Healthy Lifestyle” 💪🏽

Steve is probably one of the best trainers I've ever come across and one of the most inspiring people I know. I've personally seen him go from 330lbs and not even able to do a single push up to 180lbs of pure muscle in little over a year and he did it all while working a full time job and as a full time student. The most miraculous thing about it to me is that he did it all by himself! He personally gave me the inspiration to start working out as well and change my life for the better. Through his diet and exercise routine I went from 215lbs to 171lbs in 3 months. I had way more energy, I felt better and was faster and stronger and fitter than I ever thought possible! If you're at all timid or unsure about getting a trainer or don't know if you have what it takes believe me Steve has been in your shoes if not worse. Doesn't matter if your old, young, overweight or skinny Steve can get you to achieve your goals and get you in the shape you've always wanted to be in. Not only did he give me the tools to achieve my fitness goals but also gave me the confidence and courage to surpass other obstacles in life. His training is not only a physical transformation but a mental one as well. You'd be amazed by how much you view the world differently when you can view yourself differently as well. If you choose Steve as your personal trainer I can honestly say you won't be disappointed.

Chris is simply amazing. His knowledge of anatomy is phenomenal. After no success addressing a sciatic nerve condition with doctors and other trainers, Chris created a training program that for the first time alleviated the pain. I recommend him for any age - he has worked with my 90-year-old mother-in-law who saw remarkable improvement in balance and strength. He is professional, fun and incredibly creative in formulating personal workout regimens. - TerriD

In the summer of 2017 I made a decision to get healthly! I'm fortunate to have found Jesse to help with during this journey. He has been with me on this journey 100% not just for my training session but all my questions in between. From nutrition, motivation and changes to my training! He is very passionate about what he does and you can feel that. I have lost 30+ lbs and tone in places that needed toning but my goal was to be healthy for my daughter. I am healthier now in my 40s than I have ever been!

Shayla has been a Godsend for me! When I first met her I was 213 pounds, never worked out in my life, I ate fast food almost every day, and drank about four cokes a day. I was a ticking time bomb for many serious health conditions. Over the course of 3 months she taught me the importance of what I put in my body and how it really does effect your mood and energy. She provided me with a detailed meal plan tailored to my situation and my body's needs. She started me on supplements that have dramatically improved some deficiencies I was experiencing and helped me regain my energy. She was always attentive to what I was experiencing in my daily life and offered many alternative ways to deal with those issues through natural methods. She has taught me countless body weight workouts to help me lose weight while also strengthening my core and improving my flexibility. I was clueless about working out before I met her and now I can confidently walk into a gym and do my own workout without any confusion or embarrassment. I've lost over 30 pounds in these three months with Shayla, l went from a BMI of 33.4 to 28.2, I'm down 2 dress sizes, and went from size 16 pants to size 12. My relationship with food has changed from living to eat to eating to live. No amount of money could amount to what Shayla has taught me. My life has completely changed for the better and I can't thank her enough for the information, wisdom, and encouragement she has provided me with. I would definitely recommend Shayla to anyone looking to turn their health around. She knows what she is doing and truly has a heart for others. The results and knowledge you gain from training with Shayla make the price you pay more than reasonable. I am extremely grateful for what Shayla has taught me and now have the skills to keep my body perfectly balanced and thriving for the remainder of my life. Thank you Shayla for truly changing my life!

Joseph has been my primary trainer for a year and a half. His workouts are challenging and well structured; he is always early to the workout site and comes well prepared. He demonstrates knowledge on how to isolate different muscle groups and modifies workouts on an individual basis as needed to prevent injuries. When you get to the point in your workouts when you start to feel comfortable, Joseph will toss another 'wrench' in the mix to challenge you further. I've been one of Joseph's campers since he started Camp Gladiator-New Braunfels and have witnessed his improvement as a trainer. He does a better job now at keeping his campers on task with their workouts and continues to do an excellent job at correcting form despite the ballooning number of campers(which speaks for his quality of training in itself). I can think of only one area in which improvement could be made. It would be a challenge to campers if he were to bring extra equipment to workouts; tires, fire hoses, etc. I do unsterstand this is not entirely feasible, with lack of vehicle space. However, his workouts do not suffer in any way despite lack of said equipment.

Germain is such an impressive source of knowledge. The App he utilizes for his coaching programs is phenomenal. He is timely, professional, and intentional to cater to your desired goals. As a result of signing up for coaching I was able to lose 12 pounds, but most importantly I regained the self-love and confidence that I always promoted to my participants as an instructor, myself. I always iterate how important it is to find something you love whether it be lifting heavy weights or running or swimming or dancing. I have always felt best when I'm active and mentally healthy and a huge component of that is fitness, but I was in a rut and I just couldn't get out of it on my own. I didn't want to workout and I didn't want to go to the gym. Germain helped reinvigorate my passion for fitness and rediscover my niche.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
