Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

We used 1 Source to move 2 10x20 storage units, filled to the hilt, as well as to move items from a residence. They showed up with 4 crewmembers and two huge trailers. They were able to knock out the job around 5 hours. All of the movers were very friendly and professional. Thier contact rep who organized everything was super responsive, I didn't have to wait for a response even at 11 at night. I would totally recommend 1 Source for assistance with moving your items.

Smothers Brothers are the best! I was nervous about the time and cost of moving from San Marcos to Austin but as soon as they showed up my worries were gone. These guys move super quick and were very reassuring the the whole time. Granted I’m only in a 1 bed room, but they somehow managed to move all my stuff start to finish in under 2.5 hours! All of that at a stupid good price too! Would highly recommend them to anyone needing moving services in the area 🙌🏼 10/10

I was very satisfied with my experience with Evolution Moving Company. They were punctual, worked quickly, but thoroughly. They wrapped every piece of furniture! They knew exactly what they were doing and needed very little guidance from me. I have moved many times, and I have to say, this was the easiest yet because of Evolution Movers. I would definitely recommend them and will use them again.

I believe the responsiveness, punctuality and responsiveness were all good. I have some issues with their service 1) Wall damage while bringing in large furniture items, 2) Nicks to the master bed and kitchen table 3) TV screen display issues. We used the TV late Saturday night and the screen display was perfect. The move started on Sunday at 8:30 am. The crew assured us that that could protect the TV during their move. They wrapped the TV with one blanket and taped around the blanket. When we plugged in the 3 month old TV on Monday (no HDMI cables required, just had to plug in the power cable), the screen display had lines going across the screen The moving company did not agree that the damage happened during the move, insisting that we get the TV issue addressed with the TV manufacturer since the TV was less that 1 year old. We did not feel this was ethical, as the TV was working correctly late Saturday night and wasn't working correctly when we plugged in the TV on Monday. How do we justify the damage with the TV manufacturer, other than mishandling? If you have them move your electronics, be very aware of how they are packing. Moving your TVs need more than just 1 blanket/tape.

It's not easy to find movers who care about your belongings as much as you do. I can tell that Chris and the team does. Thank you for caring and will not hesitate to use your team again.

Our stuff got moved, mostly unharmed. Unfortunately the team that came to move us struggled a little bit. One of the guys kept dropping items and had little regard for our space. He would pick things up with no regard for walls or door. I had to request they stop dragging heavy dressers on the floor. We had to stress and oversee them closely once they got to the new location which just had all new floors and paint. For paying a higher hourly rate than most movers I guess I expected a little more care for our belongings. They also didn't show up with a big enough truck. If it weren't for their supply van in which they were able to squeeze a few items into they would have had to make two trips and extend their time. Mind you, we made 3 personal trips in our own pick-up truck.

Admin person responded promptly and was very easy to work with. The movers showed up promptly and were friendly. This would be a good option for people who will take min. Of two hours and have an elevator. It would be more cost efficient for those people.

The only complaint I have about my first experience with this company was that there was a miscommunication on the arrival time. When I initially booked with them, I was told that they could have them here at 8:30 in the morning. However, when 845 rolled around and I called, I was told that it was a one-hour arrival window. The day I booked them I had to call HEB to reschedule my delivery so I could be back in time. The movers showed up after the arrival window, which meant I wasn't sure I would be back in time. Luckily HEB showed up before we left to take my things to storage. The good does outway the bad, hence the five star rating. It was easy to schedule an appointment the day before I needed them and even though the guys were late, they immediately began loading everything on the truck and they were very efficient, professional, and friendly. They really took care of all of my items by wrapping them in moving blankets to ensure that there was no damage during transport. We got to the storage unit that I share with a friend and my friend had randomly thrown things in there. The guys helped me to move things around in the storage unit so that we could get my things situated. I really appreciate them doing that! All in all, I would recommend them and I will be using them again in the future!

Kevin was great over the phone, scheduling everything. The crew the day of moving was on time and courteous. We opted for a three man crew, even though we probably only needed two. The crew chief was very attentive, and responsive to any request. Of the other two movers, one was honestly an idiot, and the third was very sharp, -!; mentioned he'd been doing this kind of work for 5 years and it showed, in his abilities and thought process. Overall we were happy. A couple things they should do better. 1 - it took them 35 min to get from one location to another, even though it's only a 10-15 min drive tops. 2 - They were prepared with supplies, but they didn't bring any water/Gatorade/or an ice chest. Therefore they stopped in between stops for refreshments. At $145 an hour, that extra 15-20 min cost me an extra $44. 3 - They underestimated the size of truck needed. We filled up both the truck AND the van they brought. Thank goodness for the van! We would have been in trouble without it. We did have some items that did not fit, and we made 2-3 trips in our truck while they were loading items. 4 - They should wrap the sides of their dollys to avoids damaging items, or leaving red paint on them. As you will see in some of the pictures, they left red paint and a few blemished on our washer dryer. While it may not seem like that big a deal, they washer and dryer cost us about $1,500. These units were purchased at Lowes, and delivered in perfect condition. Now they have quite a few blemishes on them. It's just frustrating because it's easily avoidable. Overall they did a good job, they took direction well, and everything arrived in pretty good condition. They were the most expensive option out of 5 quotes, so I did feel I needed to hold them to a high standard.
