Adria McCuaig is an outstanding writing teacher and coach. Adria worked with my two sons beginning in July 2016. Both of my sons were starting college in August, and I wanted them to get some assistance with their writing before starting. Their needs were different. The older Jack had two years of college under his belt, and had done well, but he took forever to complete writing assignments and had trouble moving from writing prompt to thesis in an expeditious manner. Adria’s assistance was amazing; she gave him assignments, counseled him on framing a subject, and coached him 1-1 until he improved. And he has made amazing improvement: he is extremely confident in his ability to complete assignments quickly, writes with confidence and authority, and does very well (7 assignments, 7 A’s in first 2 months of college). He credits Adria with his new approach and success. My younger son James was less advanced as a writer, and like a lot of students, had not yet really clicked as a writer. Adria worked intensively with James in July and early August, and she particularly excelled at keeping him engaged with clever assignments and adroit coaching. As a result, he started college with greater confidence in his writing and has gotten off to a good start. Adria has continued to coach James on his assignments through his first months, and he has relied on her extensively. He is coming along, and Adria’s engagement with him gives me confidence that he will continue to improve as a writer and succeed in college. In sum, Adria is an outstanding, experienced writing instructor, who combines a wonderful personal manner with thorough knowledge of her craft, an engaging, student-friendly personality, and great insight into the particular needs of individual students. I recommend her most highly. (P.S. I am a former university provost, and I have extensive experience teaching writing and overseeing writing instruction at multiple institutions and in multiple modalities.)
