Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman repair a roof?

A handyman may be able to repair simpler problems on a roof, such as damaged shingles or gutters. However, it’s important that you hire a pro who’s properly trained and skilled to handle your roof repairs. When in doubt, research the licensing requirements in your state, and review several handymen and roofers before making a decision.

Is it better to repair or replace a roof?

It depends on the severity of the damage. If a falling branch or a windstorm damages an isolated patch of shingles, you could probably repair it. However, if the underlayment is damaged or if the whole roof is showing signs of wear, you might need to replace it.

Always have a professional roofer near you assess the roof before making a decision.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

Ahmad called me right away after my request for roof repair. He came over the same day to examine the roof and he gave me a reasonable estimate for the repairs. The repairs were made next day and everything looks good. I would definitely recommend Ahmad and his company for roof repairs and installation.

White Star Roofing was a pleasure to work with. Our roof was inspected; the problem was correctly assessed and our roof was successfully repaired. I left a message the night prior to our service. By 10:30 am our roof was repaired. The price was reasonable as well. Professionalism and knowledgeability were evident within minutes. Every issue was discussed and photos were provided. My whole roof is next. I would trust White Star to do the job well. I highly recommend White Star Roofing.

We were talking about roof repair and during the discussion Reynaldo also suggested to check my warranty as roof is not that old and after checking we found that we still have warranty and it saved my money. I really appreciate his time, honesty, guidance which has helped. We discuss about other projects. Thanks again

I needed to get my roof repaired efficiently and economically so I contacted ACE Roofing Company. We had leaks coming into the house after the series of storms. I contacted ACE and they came out the next day, gave me a fair quote, and were able to come out today on a HOLIDAY to get it done before it rains later this week. I appreciate that because of my busy schedule I have very few days where I’m able to be home to get maintenance work completed. They identified five spots that were causing leaks and explained how they would fix it. He even explained that mold had formed over time inside our roof, which is something no one ever brought to our attention. They did not require a deposit and offered a longer warranty than normal. Very friendly and willing to explain the situation. During the repair they located another troubling spot and fixed it without charging me more. Eric was very good about saying that the quoted price is the only price they charge. Anything else they discover is on them. We also had algae on our stucco and Eric cleaned it on free of charge! What a guy! The work looks good. Time will tell if it holds up, but seeing as how other people are happy with their service, I’m confident we won’t have any troubles from their work.
