Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Michael did an excellent job. We had a tile repair job in our kitchen, and he did an outstanding job with the replacement tiles we had on hand. We are already planning to use him again for a wood floor that needs attention.

Michael set approximately 1000 sf of 24x6 porcelain plank tile for us. The job took three weeks to complete. Even though the project took a little longer than we hoped for, the quality of work was outstanding. I personally appreciated the fact that Michael set the tiles himself and took time to insure the thin grout lines were straight and tile planks were even throughout. We got the floors we were hoping for and highly recommend Michael.

I was trying to lay some tile myself over the weekend as part of a very fast bathroom remodel to surprise my wife while she was out of town. I couldn't get the tiles spaced properly or do a quality cut around the toilet hole, so I put a request on Thumbtack and Sergio responded instantly and was able to come out same day. The tile work was great and works around the toilet hole in a perfect circle. Thanks Sergio for helping me to save this project from a delay.

Jose did an excellent job of tiling our kitchen backsplash. We had selection of 2 different types of marble tiles and the ones behind the cooktop needed lot more detailing compared to the rest. Jose was very patient, detailed and focused during his entire job. Thank you Jose!

Do not hire this contractor. Please see the picture and hand sketch. I hired Alfonso to do my shower and tile work. Alfonso is very hot tempered. He quit in the middle of the project. He damaged my bathroom too. He doesn't like to be corrected even if he is wrong. Please see attached picture how he incorrectly cut tiles and try to do the path work. He cut the bull nose tile vertically and forced fit horizontal bull nose. Instead he should have cut two of the adjacent bull nose in 45 degree angle and install them in the corner as it is done in a frame as shown in my hand sketched drawing. In additional there was no reason for him to cut the tile below. Tile could have gone 2 " higher and would have looked smooth. When I pointed out these, instead of redoing just 4 tiles he said, no one tells me how to do my job. I know what I am doing. He got mad and quit. Now I will have to spend more money, hire new contractor tear down his work and do it all over again. This will delay my other projects.

He came out and did our entryway tile for $39 I already knew by reading other reviews there was going to be a $15 traveling fee, but he didn't mention it until he was at the house. It didn't bother me because he was still cheaper than all the other people I talked to. My tile looks great and I will use him again.

Alan Bodon from Footprints Floors of McKinney was quick to respond, made appt for making an estimate and then provided a detailed written estimate by email that night. We hit a snag early in the project and had to change materials due to a flaw that would not be acceptable in our application of tile to cove fireplace. This was not Footprints’ flaw but the manufacturer’s. We had supplied the tiles and dealt with the store ourselves. We changed to slate and during that change, Footprints was on hold. Once we had everything delivered to the house, we recontacted Alan, who again responded promptly. He rebooked the job, workers showed up and did an excellent job. Our project was long only due to the flaw in material. Otherwise it was very promptly done and workmanship was excellent. I would highly recommend Footprints Floors and Alan Boden.

We have done a lot of home improvement projects and these guys were definitely the best! We had a lot of tile work that involved installing around our floating shelves which can get tricky. These guys were meticulous, nice, clean and a pleasure to work with. My husband is a perfectionist and he was super impressed. Would definitely use these them again!

Initially I gave him single star for the following reasons and then changed it back to 5 star for the following reasons. Nelson agreed to do my kitchen tile for $750.00. I went to home depot bought all the items as he requested. But then at the last moment he texted me he can't take my project. Probably he got a bigger and better deal. Nelson did not keep his words. But then he called me. Requested me to change the one star review I gave him. I declined. Then he came back and did the work. He did a great job. He took the time to fix everything that I asked for. His tile work is excellent. He is a family man and you can trust him. Yes, I will hire him again. Since he fix the problem, I changed the review to 5 star. He is actually a good guy.

In a panic I looked on Thumbtack and Dat’s responded very quickly. The entire team was so accommodating and friendly. Their workmanship is absolutely perfect. I will definitely call Dat’s for any future projects.

I hired this company to clean up tile when I moved out of a rental house. They were quick in getting back to me and setting up the appointment on short notice. He did a great job on the floor and was able to get up most of the stains from my children's art area. If I ever moved back to that side of town I would use them again.

David is very knowledgeable and passionate about tiling. He hold the same value as me that we would rather do something right than making compromises even though it brings a lot of diffculties during the process. That's why I hired him for my shower remodeling project and he delivered perfectly. There are certain times he ran into unexpected problems and he marched through those like a champ. I already have some other projects lined up with him because of his professionalism and integrity. If you are reading this trying to decide whether to give him a try, do it. You won't regret it.
