Apo and his crew did an excellent job in removing an enormous Cottonwood tree from our backyard. They were very professional, careful and thorough. They also did an excellent job cleaning up and grinding the trunk and roots as well. I highly recommend their services and will be sure to use them in the future.

I had a tree in the backyard that was interfering with power cables going from the house to the pole. They were resting on the cable and as fall/winter approached I'm sure they only would have been heavier. This is a recent purchase and the inspector said it should be dealt with. Rob responded to my request quickly and fairly, we worked out a time he could come look at it to discuss any issues and nail down a price. He hauled away the tree branches that he cut and cleaned up nicely. Would recommend to anyone.

Luki has been very quick to respond with a very reasonable estimate for my job. He removed 2 trailers full of soil and rock, though he did have to come back on a second visit when he didn't remove quite as much as asked the first time. He was quick to reschedule and finished the job well. We've been doing over our backyard bit by bit, and he is patient with our requests for estimates for the next portion.

I had JV Landscaping completely redo my backyard. I had them tear everything up and start fresh. They gave me great ideas and options to choose from and listened to what I wanted. I ended up with new patios, new sod, and a whole new layout for a backyard that I love. It started as a total nightmare area and now I love to spend my time back there. They were awesome to work with and I completely recommend working with them.

Daniel was great to work with! Very responsive and even came out on a Sunday to give us a bid. Very reasonably priced. He wasn't booked out months and months and we were able to get our backyard done quickly. He was the only professional who offered a detailed contract that we both signed, which gave us even more confidence. Would definitely recommend for sprinkler and sod

Thomas was very professional, punctual, and flexible when creating a great design for my backyard. He came out to my home to measure my yard, and came back to me with a couple designs for us to talk about. I chose one, and he produced a more detailed design including an irrigation plan and a list of plants. I'm very satisfied with his work.

Jerson and his G & M Landscape team performed work in our backyard including removal of a corrugated steel ring encircling our in-ground trampoline pit, filling in our in-ground trampoline pit with road base and top soil, removing all sod, re-grading the lawn area, re-sodding and removal of four trees. All work was performed in a friendly, professional manner, on bid and on schedule. We are extremely satisfied with the results and would highly recommend G & M Landscape.

Ruben and his team did a fantastic job on my backyard. Ruben helped me remove the sod, connect sprinklers with 100% coverage and install new sod. In addition, I utilized his services to clean, loosen soil and put weed fabric on all my flower beds. He went above and beyond to pick the plants for the beds and gave suggestions for watering. He even made sure all flower beds get proper water coverage. He is very knowledgeable and honest about his work. I will definitely utilize his services in future and will not hesitate to recommend him to friends/family.

Phil from Filimoeatu Construction surpassed my expectations with my landscaping, sprinkler system, and patio design. Our front lawn was sloping and not usable, so he leveled it, added sprinklers and built a rockwall. I was unsure at first, but trusted his vision and it came out better than I expected! He also leveled our our sloping backyard and added sod for our front and backyards. The patio was a suggestion of his, and it turned out fantastic and wasn't something I was even thinking of doing. It added an entertaining space that we love and are proud to show off. I was pleasantly surprised he had all the tools he needed to complete the job which helped him finish on time and under budget which was very appreciated! We plan on hiring him for our kitchen remodel in the spring and look forward to working with him and his interior designer on that!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
