After having Luis with Smart Appliance in my home to repair my fridge I felt much more confident and at ease that everything would be okay. He explained what was wrong and how it would be repaired AND it wasn't going to cost me a ridiculous amount. He said he only needed to repair something simple (an old worn out gasket) and didn't need to order an expensive part (which I was told I needed after a different repairman had very briefly looked at it - while having to read from a manual at the same time. I don't think he even knew what he was doing.) My fridge was fixed in a matter of minutes while the other repair man that came out earlier said he would have to order a part which would take at least a day to get (and was very expensive). In the meantime, my fridge would very well have been still leaking all over my hardwood floor causing further damage to it. Luis fixed the problem in a matter of minutes and was HONEST about what needed to be done. I trust Smart Appliance and will use them again and again.

We initially needed an area of subfloor fixed, and Keith did a fantastic job on that. We had had someone else fix a section of subfloor somewhere else in our house earlier, and the section Keith repaired looked much better, and was much smoother with the area around it, then the other repair had. We have since had him do a few other projects for us, and every time he has done an excellent job at very fair prices. We will definitely hire Keith again for any future handyman jobs needed.

Shane was terrific. Very professional from scheduling to updating his traffic progress and his work. He did a microwave installation for me and did it very well. There were some hiccups along the way but he handled them quickly (the hiccups weren't his doing) . I would highly recommend As Isz for any appliance repair or installation needs. I will hire him again.

What’s good about Byron is he came quickly, next day as opposed to waiting a week for the big boys. What you need to know is this is a side business, at it may take a day or two to come get the parts and fix. In my case he asked my tenant if he could pick up a part to install, and he did willingly because he wanted the washer to work. Byron is super nice and did competently diagnose the problem. He has good communication and fair prices. If you can work with his schedule a bit and going for parts he’s the man. If you need full service with a stocked truck and someone who will just do it all, you may want to call around. I would use him depending on the tenant- some don’t mind helping and others are more demanding and wouldn’t think of going for parts. I liked him and will call again. Thanks Byron!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
    • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
    • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

    How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
