Training sessions with Obie are awesome! He helped correct my form on many different lifts through great coaching and positive feedback. Obie helped all of my powerlifting PR's increase dramatically over just a few months, over a 100 lbs gain in my squats, bench, and mostly deadlifts. Obie is very creative and keeps the training fresh and challenging. I'd recommend Obie to anyone looking to make serious gains towards any personal goals.

Chris is awesome! He found out my fitness needs and created a workout plan around it. He kept detailed notes about each personal training session and followed-up on my diet to make sure I was getting the most out of each session. And on top of everything, he pushed me to do a lot more than I thought I would be able to do! Highly Recommend!

I have been training with Paul at the Utah Fitness Institute for two months. I have been very satisfied with the training program and Paul's highly individualized approach. Paul developed a customized program to address my goals and has continued to tailor it to my indivdual needs and circumstance. As a result, I have found that I not only get physical benefits from training with the Utah Fitness Institute, but I also thoroughly enjoy the experience. At the Utah Fitness Institute, I am continuously pushed without becoming overwhelmed or injured. It always amazes me how Paul knows my physical limits, often better than I do, which is a hallmark of an experienced trainer. Based on my experience, I enthusiastically recommend Utah Fitness Institute to everyone.

This woman is amazing! She is organized, responds immediately if we have any questions regarding our training regimine, she does the "full packsge" including health, nutrition, and exercise, and she has such a fun personality! Joe is an excellent trainer. I let him know exactly what I was looking to accomplish and he tailored my program to meet those needs. He is very personable, funny and really cares about you as if you were his only client. Even now while I am on a break from our training sessions he still checks in to see how I am doing. When my schedule permits I will be going back! You couldn't pick a better trainer.

I researched trainers very carefully in the SLC area before choosing Bruna and never looked back and it’s been a year and 1/2... She has the workout written out and prepared before class she has good form a stickler for form in her clients... I feel safe with her.... She does two different forms of martial arts, graduated from the UofU while we were training in psychology. Great personality and work ethic. Go with confidence from getting up from the sofa to a cross fit champion.... things will get better

I have been working with Kenny for two weeks now. I'm so sore! I didn't have a lot of experience with training before, but I feel like he has been understanding of that and encouraging as well. He is fun to work with and has pushed me to work hard. Definitely a good choice to hire him as my trainer!

Corey jones has helped me to create a miracle in my life. I have trained with Corey Jones for 19 months so far. He provided online training during the time I was rehabbing after two surgeries as well. Corey has taught me nutrition, healthy thought processes and how to exercise. I have lost 75lbs. during our time together so far. Corey has helped me maintain my 100lb. weight loss during rehab. Corey keeps me safe and has helped to improve my mobility. Corey has been patient and caring while I’ve made mental and emotional changes thru all of this. Corey has inspired me to be happier, do more and live more. Corey is very knowledgeable about training in a variety of areas and he lives what he preaches. I love Corey’s work ethic and it produces great results. I trust Corey and have been amazed at what I’ve been able to do in my 50’s. Corey is professional, courteous, respectful and never judge-mental. Corey responds to my texts promptly and he is great at putting me at ease. Corey is always on time and I get more than my money’s worth. Corey is a life changer.

Ben was so amazing to work with. I explained exactly what I wanted to accomplish while training with him, and he knew exactly how to help and we saw so much progress right away. I loved how he knew that he was supposed to train me in a general way (VASA style), but he decided that I was in shape enough to focus on what I was wanting to focus on which was jumping. And wow I saw so much progress so fast when I was working with him. Like he knows when you can give more, and he’ll get you to give it. But on the flip side he will listen to you if you have a concern or are just having a hard day or something, and he’ll take that into account. Anyways I 100% would recommend Ben, he helped me so much, and he’s just a really cool guy.

I have been training with Maui off and on for over three years, but consistently for the last year and a half. She helped me lose the weight after having my first child and has helped me reach several goals beyond that. She is an expert on how to combine fitness and diet to help you maintain a healthy, balanced life. Maui is a motivator and encourager. She goes above and beyond for her clients and if you want long lasting results- 360 is for you!

Sam is an excellent personal trainer. I signed up with HIITFitLife wanting to lose weight, become proficient in weight training and running all while tending to a recently healed back injury and he was able to build a workout plan that accommodates all of my fitness goals while paying special attention to my back. Since beginning my fitness journey with Sam, not only do I fit my favorite jeans better, I FEEL better! Sam keeps me accountable for my workouts on days that I don't train as well as what I eat - ensuring consistent progress. I also appreciate that as fitness trainer, Sam's past experience in healthcare is evident in the way he incorporates his vast knowledge on human anatomy and the way the body works in each workout session. Most importantly, it's evident that Sam is passionate about his work. You can see it in the way he shows up in each group and individual training session, in his professionalism, punctuality, his detailed notes/spreadsheets of each session, and his readiness to follow up on any questions as well as offer advice and motivation. Sam's HIITFitLife is the truth!

When I first started going full-time with TroyBuilt Training I had experienced mild gains in both strength and size, however, within six weeks of going full-time with TroyBuilt Training I really started to see the strength improvements muscle definition improvements and overall size game I really started to see the strength improvements muscle definition improvements in overall size gains. as of late, approximately six months into my full-time training with Troy, my size increases been very dramatic, 5 1/2 inches just on chest in less than nine months, and the number of people making solid eye contact and comments has dramatically increased. I do credit Troy and the TroyBuilt Training system for the guidance and the direction on these changes. He is very motivational, and constantly pushes me to achievement levels. After my two hour workout, I can easily say I was the hardest working motherf-er in the gym!

Seth is an amazing trainer. He always knows exactly where I am at physically and how hard to push me to see results (*and not push me out the door). He is intuitive, professional, and genuinely cares about his clients. I have been training with him for 3+ years and could not be more satisfied. Thanks.

Just over a year ago I began my search to find the perfect personal trainer. We had tried diet. We had tried exercise. We had seen doctors. We had spoken to nutritionists. There was weight loss but it was always followed by weight gain. We needed a workout program that would work for the individual - not a one size fits all approach. We needed a healthy eating plan that we could live by long term and not just a diet that could never last. We wanted someone who could understand the struggles of living in a body too big and the ups and downs of losing the weight. And then - I found Laura. Over the last year she has been everything we were hoping for. So . . . . If you are feeling the things we were feeling and you are searching for someone to truly help you with your journey - there is absolutely no reason you should not pick up the phone and call Laura with Transformation Training to see if she might just be the solution you are searching for.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

    • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
    • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
    • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
    • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
    • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
    • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
    • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

    What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands. In competitive kickboxing, opponents must remain standing, and no fighting can occur on the mat or ground. Kickboxing has its roots in Muay Thai and other ancient martial arts. Some elemental moves from kickboxing include roundhouse kicks, back kicks, hooks, uppercuts and more.

Modern group fitness kickboxing is practiced in gyms and workout studios across the country. It draws its moves from combat kickboxing, but instead of fighting with an opponent, participants perform jabs, crosses, punches and kicks in instructor-led, choreographed routines set to music. Personal trainers also incorporate kickboxing moves into workout routines, spending time punching and kicking the bag. These strength-building moves, mixed with high-intensity intervals, boost heart rate and increase strength.

    Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session. Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
