We recently used Veronica's Cuisine for our son's wedding rehearsal dinner. We had a big group to feed...120. We received proposals from many caterers and all of them had add on fees like delivery fees (around $500), staffing fees ($100/person for servers at buffet), etc. and then I found Veronica's Cuisine on Thumbtack. There were no hidden fees. When they said the cost was $10/person it was $10/person. They were flexible with our guest count and gave us within 2 days of our event to make changes and then were no price adjustments based on less guests attending. We could also get our full deposit back if for any reason we needed to cancel within 2 weeks of the event. The food was delicious and delivered on time. I would definitely recommend them to my friends and would use them again for our next catering event. Thanks Veronica and Daniel for your attentiveness and making our special evening even better!

I ordered a meal for drop-off for an event for 160 people. The food came on time, hot, and in easy to manage containers. Chef Alex gave us all the information we needed and more. Everyone raved about the apple cream chicken. It was something unique, not something you eat at home or in a restaurant everyday so everyone asked what it was and how to make it. LOL. I gave them Chef Alex's number and told them to order from him. Highly recommend 801 Catering! I will use them again.

We had a great experience with Wasatch Flavors for our retirement party, so much so that I was asked many times who catered for our event. Great job! We'll definitely use you again!

Jenna cooked the most delicious foods for a family reunion I hosted. She cooked at my house, don't ask me how she easily managed to cook calmly and efficiently as if she cooks in that location everyday. My family LOVED the food, her dessert, and her margaritas, second to none!!! I would highly recommend Jenna to make any event tasty and very special and unique.

I hired Chef Rob for a backyard party for about 40 guests with an unusual menu request. I asked for a "low country boil" which meant bringing in craw dads from out of state ... I literally have looked for a few years to find a chef that would do this for us - and thanks to Thumbtack, I found one willing to do it and was so much fun to work with! Chef Rob is OUTSTANDING. He left me with no doubt that he could handle the entree and gave me some great ideas for sides, desserts and beverages. He was extremely responsive, he showed up earlier than I was expecting, he has a mobile kitchen where he can cook everything, he was uber professional and has a GREAT personality! While I was still running around like a lunatic setting up for the party - he volunteered his services repeatedly to help us - even going so far as running down the street to pick up a truck load of ice. He was amazing at our party with our guests. He isn't afraid to take charge and he is quite fine just being in the background. Our dinner that night was outrageous!! I would consider myself a foodie - I know good food - but Chef Rob hit it out of the ballpark. He will forever be my go-to guy for any personal or professional catering events. I cannot sing his praises enough. If you are lucky enough to find him available for your event - hire him.

I ordered two dozen cupcakes that look like roses from Simply frosted. They were absolutely gorgeous and look so shabby chic. That wasn't even the best part. The best part that the taste of the cupcakes and the frosting match if not out did the looks of the cupcakes absolutely fabulous. Someone else ordered a dozen cupcakes from a pastry shop in Salt Lake City but it didn't even match the quality and the beauty of what Simply Frosted provided. The icing alone melted in your mouth. Thank you for making me look good at our work event.

I have used Harvest SLC Catering for a couple of events and have absolutely loved this company! My husband and I decided rather than have his business Christmas party (about 14 people) at a noisy restaurant, we would host a more intimate meal at our home. We hired Harvest SLC to cater the meal. It was beyond delicious and the presentation was amazing. The meal was a 5 course meal including appetizers, soup, salad, entrée, and dessert. Every single person in attendance commented on not only how delicious the meal was, how beautiful the presentation of each course was, but also how lovely it was to be able to enjoy the ambiance of a more personal atmosphere. Because of our positive experience with the small dinner party, when our daughter was planning her wedding, we knew exactly who we wanted to cater the event. Even though the numbers were much larger (250+ people), they were able to handle this without batting an eye! Because it was an afternoon wedding, our daughter decided she wanted a dessert bar for her reception. Harvest created a wonderful variety of tantalizing and delicious desserts: sugar cookies, carrot cake (with chocolate chips instead of raisins at the groom's request), eclairs, glazed doughnuts, as well as a fresh fruit/cheese/ crackers and breads tray. Harvest SLC even went so far as to make macaroons in the colors of the wedding! Harvest SLC also prepared a light luncheon for the wedding party to snack on during the time between the ceremony and setting up for the reception. They thought of everything! Our daughter wanted the wedding cake to be a tower of individually decorated cupcakes...not a problem. Harvest SLC created the most beautiful cupcake display employing three different types of cupcakes, each one beautifully decorated with fresh flowers. It was truly a work of art. In short, I can without any hesitation recommend this company for whatever size or type of event you are having!

Working with Rockwell Catering and Events was a breeze! The owner, Ethan Ingram, was so personable and easy to work with. He listened to all of our requirements and when I got really specific/nit picky about little things that wouldn't have mattered to anyone but me, Ethan listened and made the changes I asked for quickly! The food he makes is amazing and the tasting that we had with him before booking anything was so professional. I highly, HIGHLY recommend booking any catering that you need done through Rockwell Catering and Events. Big or small events - you won't be disappointed. Two thumbs up!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
