Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

Read our cost guide on fence installation costs to see prices for other types of fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Great, responsive, small business! When a couple other businesses wouldn't relocate our current gate while adding some additional fence to it, we were happy when Family Affairs Fences said they could do it for quite a bit less than it would have been to have a completely new gate/fence put in from the other people we talked to. If we ever have to get our whole backyard fence replaced I'll definitely be reaching back out.

Keith Foster built our fence in a timely manner and it looks fabulous! He is extremely easy to deal with and the price was great. He uses exceptional materials and was great about changes in original plans. Keith goes above and beyond to please his clients. This is the second employment of Keith to build a fence in our family and we couldn’t be more pleased. We would very highly recommend Foster Construction for any fence or deck needs.

Great people to work with!! They are military family-friendly & came to our property before we even moved in to give us an estimate...& then again a few weeks later because my husband wanted different fence lengths & had questions. They were honest about prices of mats & labor fees, which we highly valued. They came to install the fence when they said they would & completed it in two days! We love our fence & are happy that we chose Family Affair to help us!

I called David on Monday and he started work that Friday. I had already called Hercules Fences and Chesapeake Fences - neither company called me back. David's prices were reasonable - especially since he was building the fence, not using premade pickets. The wood he used was weather treated. We found a couple pickets that we didn't like for cosmetic reasons, and David replaced them no questions asked. He made sure that the gates opened smoothly and didn't drag on the ground. He said that if there was ever anything broken over the years to just call him and he will replace the broken piece at cost. Over all a very professional guy. The fence looks great and we couldn't be happier. We are using him again to work on our pergola.

I worked with Ernesto, from out of state, to have a fence torn down and rebuilt for my rental property in Chesapeake. This is a veteran owned and run business and as a vet myself I love supporting other vets in their businesses. With that said, Ernesto was up front with every aspect of my fence tear down and installation. He provided many different quotes, they stayed in touch throughout the project and the finished quality of the fence was PERFECT! My tenants didn't have much interaction with the crew, but said they seemed nice. They hauled off all of the old fence and left absolutely no mess behind. I would definitely recommend Veterans Lawn LLC for any lawn care or whatever service you need that they provide. Very courteous, professional and worth every penny. Their prices are very good for the quality of work. Great job guys!

Max has wonderful customer service. They put up the fence quickly and it is beautiful. He is very detail oriented and made sure each board was even with the next. I am highly impressed how quickly it was put up and how great it looks. I'm just amazed that putting up the fence made the house have more curb side appeal.

If you are considering using this company to do anything to your home or business, run! You will be lied to, and you will be swindled. After several run-ins with the owner of this company over the phone, which we never met, we finally had our 6 foot privacy fence installed in October of 2020. I’m fairly certain that some of the materials used to build our fence were leftover scraps from previous jobs because many of the pickets which were individually installed along the backside of our property are inches shorter than 6 foot and that is clearly visible along the bottom of the fence. Also, there were many pickets that were not nailed in properly and months later we are still finding them. The post where our fence meets up to the corner of our shed is not a 4 x 4 post, but a 2 x 4, which I have recently been told is not in line with Chesapeake city code. The 2x4 cross section where the fence meets the corner of our house is severely bowed and visible from the outside of the fence. If you choose to hire this company to complete your project, make sure you go over everything in your contract before you sign it. Make sure every tiny detail of your job is included in your hand written contract because if you don’t, trust me, it will come back to bite you. My suggestion would be when you have any conversation with the salesman from this company or with the owner from this company, record your conversations because you will need them. I would strongly urge spending a few extra dollars and get your project done right. Now, I wish we had. In the attached photos, we are in the process of staining the fence. The inside has been stained but the outside has not. So yes, it is the same fence in all pics

They reached out to me within a couple days of submitting a request for a quote and we’re able to have somebody to my house with a couple days to talk about measurements, materials and costs. The crew came out and installed the fence in one day! They are extremely flexible and are willing to go the mile to make sure you will be satisfied. Keith and his team were absolutely awesome. He was the best value out of multiple quotes that I received and his fence work is just gorgeous. Not only did he complete the fence in a very timely manner but he was able to get started right away and went above and beyond making sure I had what I needed. Seriously could not be more thrilled with this job and they were a pleasure to work with. Highly highly recommend them!!

Max and his crew did a great job and for a good price. The only reason I didn't give him 5 stars is because we told him we have a dog that escapes, he said he wouldn't escape his fence, and he did the very first time out!

Clever was amazing from the beginning to the ending of the project. His availability and pricing exceeding my expectations. The work he completed on my fence was well worth every penny spent and his willingness to make sure I was happy as customers showed that he values and stand behind his work. Definitely will be calling him back for other projects as well as referring him to anyone I can.

David and his crew, Shawn and Wiley, did a fantastic job on my privacy fence. He was upfront and honest and walked me through it step by step. Each day that I saw him he explained what he was doing that day and why he was doing it that way. He treated it like he was building it for his own use and you can tel by the photos he takes pride in what he does. I definitely would recommend him

Dave went above and beyond with building my custom gate to my privacy fence. He was descriptive with what the project would entail and was honest about recommending what we truly needed vs what he could sell us on. His attention to detail and workmanship were spot on. His prices are affordable and we were extremely pleased with the end results. From my request for a quote to the completion of the job was one week. The other company I contacted hasn't even called me back to come look at job. Daves timeline was awesome! Would recommend him and use him again.

Quality Built Exteriors (QBX) did an excellent job. I’d give them 5 stars if everything ran flawlessly, projects were completed 100% on schedule, and zero rework. That said, their customer service, attitude and responsiveness were the best I’ve seen! Hired QBX to complete several small projects: (1) Install 35ft of wooden fence, (2) re-flash chimney and (3) remove rotten wood/wrap garage door trim. I found this company more capable than your standard handyman service. All the employees were very experienced. If you have several exterior jobs to prep your home for selling and you want to deal with one company, this one is it!

Excellent job by everyone involved. I dont mean just the building of fence. Ray was great with coming out twice to double measure and talk about job. Chris was excellent with the construction and put up with all our questions or concerns(our property is uneven so we worked around that minor issue with our gate) Cheryl and Amber at the office were great also. Couple of sweet girls, who were always available and didn't mind being bothered. When i spoke to the girls they made it feel like i was on phone with a friend, not a business. My wife and i were extremely pleased. We also needed a part of gutter replaced and Ray added it it on with a discount, on top of already discount for being a military veteran. We will be using them again as needed in future and coming yrs and we keep going with home improvements.

Communication was terrible. I literally had to blow them up to maybe get a response. This is a reply to the owners reply to my rating. I have screenshots of the conversations that weren’t answered from the thumbtack app, and from the salesman’s who “tracked me down for payment” I told him to give me a heads up before he charged my card so I could contact the bank, in which he didn’t reach out until my card was declined for the initial 7K or so charge. I’ve attached the screenshots, there were issues with the permits which I had asked about and ended up having to pay for even though on the contract it stated one look was responsible for the permits. The guy I talked to in person and asked about it said the company was supposed to get permits. After I reached out and got no response I just got the permit instead. I was told someone would come out and attempt to adjust the fencing to help with the issue that I could push the bottom out with my foot. No one came. I asked about the front gate that I could barely open and was told they would come adjust it and no one ever showed up. Who ever is in charge of managing the app and giving messages to the owner didn’t do their job and this is what happens when people are left out of the loop. I do however appreciate the help I got when I did get it.
