David and his crew were awesome!! They were able to accommodate a next-day vent cleaning for my home (which with 30 vents, was no small undertaking!) Each of the crew members was polite, efficient, and kept things as clean as was possible. I plan on using David for any future hvac needs!

Scott and Gary were great. Scott set up the appointment, Gary came out and took a look at our chimney which was in a bad way. They gave me a fair estimate and a timeline within which they could complete the work. I am very satisfied with the work, and since the furnace vents to the chimney and it was full of debris, they cleaned the chinmey, re-lined it and put caps on the chimney. This is one happy customer, and the price was right.

I had Gomez help me with some HVAC work in my bathroom. We needed to move a air vent from the floor to the ceiling due to a bathroom remodel. He was Fantastic. I would recommend him to any friend or family member. He was on time. Price was great. He explained what he was going to do and executed everything on time. Seeing as how I live in an old Arlington house, we of course uncovered issues along the way and he was able to still complete the job without jacking up the price. I cannot say the same for other contractors that I have worked with in the past. If you need Heating and AC work done in your home, call Gomez. He is a great professional.

Ernesto Cruz (his company is Salvation, LLC ) installed a dryer vent and washer for me in my finished basement where there was no existing plumbing. I was very happy that to install the dryer vent he did not cut a hole in my basement drywall ceiling where as I has couple estimate previously and both had told me they had to cut the drywall ceiling at least in 2 places! He did a nice job to install new plumbing for the washer. At the end he hooked up washer/dryer and made sure work properly. He always showed up on time, very organized, and completed the job within the timeframe promised. He is polite and got the job done at a reasonable price. I would recommend him to any friend or family member looking for a good plumber. I will contact him for any future plumbing need at my house. Thank you Ernesto!

Highly recommend Obed Callejas. He does amazing work and is awesome to work with. He added some plumbing in my basement, added a vent for dryer and I've hired him to add floor heating and tile. I know that will be equally great.

We recommend Jim and his team very highly! His challenge was figuring out how to install a central heating and cooling system in a 1851 stable. Not only did he take on the challenge but seemed to revel in it! It was time consuming and amazingly difficult. He even took the time and made the effort to order and install special air ducts to distribute the air flow more efficiently. He returned promptly to tweak the system when we called. He's easy to work with, knowledgeable, able to work outside the box and has the integrity and work ethic it's hard to find these days. We couldn't be more pleased!

H&J Installed a new A/C, gas furnace and duct work. They also moved the water heater and re plumbed the laundry washer. The installation was clean, organized and all around professional. I got a Cadillac system for a Honda price. Also please note your HVAC system is only as good as your installer! This is an owner operated company that clearly values the customers satisfaction and the product. The company's low overhead is passed along to the customer with very reasonable prices. Highly Recommended for Duct and HVAC work.

Dan was fantastic. He did all he said he would do and then some. He not only cleaned the vents to my dryer, but went into the attic, disassembled the outside vent on the roof, and found the blockage that was keeping my dryer from working properly. I was thinking I'd have to buy a new dryer, but it works great now. He and his crew were very polite, skilled and professional. I will use them again, without a doubt.

We hired Margaaa Services a few weeks back to inspect the basement of a house we had made an offer on in Lorton. I initially went with this company because they had great reviews on Yelp, and also because of the price. They quoted me $50-$100 cheaper than their competitors. At first, I was concerned with going with this company because they seem to be large, but everyone I spoke to was super helpful and they delivered everything they promised. Our mold inspector was Moe and he seemed to be very knowledgeable and was very nice to answer our many questions. After the mold inspection, we had some professionals go to the house to further look into some things, and pretty much everything Moe told us about the mold, the professionals told us. So, it seems to me that Moe knows exactly what he is doing. We received a very detailed report the next day (on a Saturday!) by email as promised. (Which was an additional cost, but totally worth it.) Overall, I am extremely happy I chose Margaaa Services and will gladly hire them again. Try them you wont be disappointed!!! :)

Eric came out and cleaned our ducts, found another issue we didn't know about and did the work quickly and efficiently. He's clearly not afraid to work hard because one of the jobs took a while to complete and he worked seemingly non-stop. We will be referring him to anyone who needs mold abatement or duct cleaning

I just bought a home and needed to inspect the fireplace as it was being sold as-is. They came out to my house within 3 days of initial request for a FREE inspection. I was able to get the sense of security that the first time I use the fireplace it will work as intended. I was billed 0$ and would absolutely recommend these professionals to anyone.

Duct Doctors did an outstanding job for us! We had a dead critter in one of our air vents, which was very difficult to locate. The critter was causing a terrible smell in our house every time the heat came on, and we were having guests for Christmas. Duct Doctors arrived early on the morning of Christmas Eve and hoped to be done with our house fairly quickly. It took much longer than anticipated, but despite it being a holiday, the extremely polite and hardworking crew stayed until the critter, which turned out to be a chipmunk, was located. I was also impressed by their prompt, on time arrival in the morning, as well as their use of a tarp over the door to try to block the cold and loud vacuum noise out since the door had to be kept open to make room for the vacuum hoses. In addition, the crew took their shoes off when they entered our house so they would not track dirt inside. We were extremely appreciative of their hard work and perseverance as they worked to find the dead animal decomposing in our air vent!

They ran a new dryer vent (duct?) from the dryer, through a wall, the ceiling/floor of my kitchen, through a cabinet to keep it hidden, and then out the exterior wall. They did a great job. Very happy with how it turned out. They were very friendly and had good communication in terms of timing, cost, etc. - which to me is one of the most important aspects of a project. I would definitely recommend these guys.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

    • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
    • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
    • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
    • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
    • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
    • Ductwork properly protected.
    • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

    • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
      • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
      • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
      • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
    • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
    • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
