After exchanging a few emails with Steve and one other potential teacher/coach, I chose to work with Steve. We have been meeting weekly for the last few weeks and the experience has been great! He is very talented, not only on the guitar but in teaching and helping me to progress. I'm an older student (over 50) who has had lessons before during my younger years. My experience with Steve so far (and I expect this will not change) has been wonderful - I look forward to the sessions and my practice is productive. His attitude and approach are supportive and encouraging. I strongly recommend that you give him a try if you are thinking about taking lessons at all.

Awesome working with Chris! My daughter has tried piano lessons twice in the past and her interests always fell off, but with Chris she's motivated to even PRACTICE without being told. I'm loving it!!

I started taking guitar lessons with Curt about a year ago. I had no previous music lessons whatsoever and felt it may be a little late in life to learn to play. Curt is very patient with beginners, like myself. I was nervous at my first lesson. Curt was able to break the music and chords down to a level for me to understand. He made me feel very comfortable and I appreciate the time he's taken to help me learn to play the guitar, which is a lifelong dream. I have highly recommended Curt to several friends.

Nate immediatlely replied to my request for guitar lessons, and went beyond what I would have expected by offering to go guitar shopping with me. He is extremely talented, and he explains things in a way that is easy to understand. He was also very flexible in setting up a lesson time that worked with my schedule.

My husband and I hired Skip Hancock to play for our small wedding ceremony. He was a professional from the beginning to the very end. He was very easy to get in touch with, was punctual on the day of the event, and played beautifully during our ceremony. There were times when I tuned everything else out and just listened to what he was playing. We were so impressed with Mr. Hancock's performance and we're so glad we found him through Thumbtack!

Destiney is an incredible teacher, a wonderful pianist, and an absolutely lovely person. She is compassionate, patient, energetic and just amazing with children. My daughter was 4 years old when she started lessons. I recall an incident when she started working on a new recital piece that was a bit more challenging for her. Following her lessons, I asked her to play it for me and she struggled with a particular measure in the piece. I tried different methods with her: one hand only, count out loud, play really slowly, copy my fingers. But whining turned into tears, and tears quickly turned into a complete physical meltdown. Destiney happened to return for my son's lesson within minutes of the meltdown and my daughter was still emotionally tuned out at this time. But within 10 minutes, Destiney not only got her to play the section perfectly, she brought back my daughter's calm self, her confidence, and her smile. We have seen her bring out the best in all of three of our children.

Tonya is one of the best piano teachers I have personally worked with. I have worked with a handful of other piano teachers in the past, attempting to learn the instrument, and several teachers have either gotten irritated with me and said that I did not try, or did not have the patience to try and teach me the right way, and stopped teaching me. Tonya was good about being both patient and helpful at correcting me with a multitude of errors I experienced in my time as her student. She was also very good about moving at my pace throughout the lesson. She had a very good feel for what I could handle, and she was good about keeping up when we breezed through the fast sections and also slowing down and providing feedback when we experienced longer, more difficult stretches of a song or hand signature that took me longer to process and understand. She also has a really great background in the instrument, and she has pointed out many different examples of classical piano music and other styles and songs for the piano that I have never experienced before, which just goes to show how passionately she feels about the instrument! On top of all that, she was very good about scheduling and being flexible with communication. Because I was commuting from so far away from her town to get lessons, I often had to jump through loops with getting rides from my mom and dad. Also, with my work and schoolwork on top of it all, I had to change the dates and times for lessons with Tonya many, many times. She was very flexible with lessons and was very good about communicating lesson plans and working out scheduling, whether I used email or phone to contact her. My only personal disappointment with Tonya is that I had to so abruptly end my lessons with her. She was easily the best piano teacher I have ever had, and she has rekindled my love for the piano, and I continue to practice the work she has taught me daily in hope that I can pick up lessons again someday. I would highly recommend Tonya to anyone who wants to learn the piano, as she is a very talented musician and teacher. Great and easy to work with, and I loved the service she provided me at the reasonable price she offered! ~Tyler K.

About

I am a student at William and Mary studying linguistics and Spanish. I have been playing piano for 10 years and teaching lessons for 5. I have also played guitar for 5 years and taught lessons for 3. In addition, I have experience tutoring youth of all ages, from elementary school to high school. I would say Spanish is my specialty; my knowledge is extensive, especially instructing at the introductory level. I am a straight A student and am competent to tutor most subjects, but I also have particular previous experience in Algebra. Though I am skilled in presenting material from a textbook or workbook clearly along the format of the class, I also enjoy coming up with creative methods for teaching and tutoring and designing my own exercises.

I train on breathing properly for singing. I train on all styles, and I have trained in opera, classical, pop, and R&B. I teach site reading, give my students a schedule to practice at home, and help them find their own sound. I train in vibrato, falsetto, and all other mainstream voice diversions. I can train male or female. I teach at a studio in Virginia Beach called OBW Theatre Company. If close or nearby, I can drive to a student's residence, if necessary. It's $30 for a half hour if you don't want to take a whole-hour session.

About

I am a piano, cello and music theory teacher. I have a BA in Music (Cello Performance, Minor in Piano) earned from a music college in Russia. I am highly professional. Since 2010, my students participated in over 25 recitals and concerts at College of William and Mary, Crosswalk Community Church, King's Way Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Greenfield Senior Living, Patriot's Colony, and many other venues. My students also participated in The National Federation of Music Clubs for the last 4 years in a row. All of them received superior rating, and four of them already received Golden Cups. I have been judging piano solo events for the last 3 years. Our recent performing project was playing in the Bard's Market at the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. Three of my students did an exceptional job entertaining the audience by playing a classical piano repertoire. I also provide wedding/special occasion entertainment (cello, piano, and violin) as a trio, duet, solo in any combination.

I provide a complete instruction for all string instruments, bowed and fretted. I also give a complete instruction in music theory. I work with live instrumental performance groups. Composition and arranging services are offered. Fees are $35.00 per half-hour lesson. You provide the materials. My goal is to provide each student with the necessary knowledge and skill set to enable them to perform either as a soloist in their home and perform as a member of an ensemble, such as a church, neighborhood bands, etc. I can get this done in a two-year period if the student is diligent with his/her practice routine.

My method is fairly orthodox -- I teach what is needed for a student to actually be able to play songs in just a few weeks. While we will learn the basic chord shapes and scales, I will also teach alternative tuning, many of which have much simpler chord shaping, enabling some popular songs to be learned even by the beginner.
