I was in need for someone to contact me quickly and come help me sort out a water leak that materialized itself as a water stain on the ceiling. I was only going to be home for the weekend and I was not having much luck with standard plumbers. Tony emailed me right back with an offer to come out right away to look it over and give me a free estimate. I checked out the reviews he had from other customers and it just felt like this guy was the kind of guy I could trust. He showed up and went right to work troubleshooting the problem using very understandable logic. Water leaks can be tricky to isolate but Tony did a good job with minimal sheetrock removal to assess that indeed it was probable the 2nd floor shower drain leaking very slowly. He suggested recaulking the drain with silicon first to see if that would sort out my problem before the more involved solution of cutting into the subfloor to access and replace the drain itself which I really appreciated. That was the kind of troubleshooting I was looking for and it gave me piece of mind. The real bonus with Tony is that he is a real handyman and can do just about anything. He sees all these problems everyday in his regular job as a maintenance guy. I had some electrical switch issues and some exterior rooting wood and he addressed both those issues as well as the leaky shower drain. Tony squeezed me into an already busy weekend in terms of scheduled work on both Saturday and Sunday and there was no weekend upcharge. Tony is a very peronable "average joe" kind of guy you trust very quickly and you are rewarded with good quality work for a very fair price! When you find a guy like Tony Tan the Handyman you have a go to guy for future projects that are not within your ability and even a plumbing leak does not seem so bad. If you have any questions about what I have said please feel free to contact me at (312)594-7552.

we had a clogged drain in our kitchen sink and in our washing machine. in about 40 minutes, cody was able to fix the problem with one of his fancy snake tools and cleared as far as he had to go down the pipe in order for the back up to dissipate. so far, we are pleased with the results.

Mr. Stephens was able to assess our problem and fix the shower drain leak in our ceiling almost immediately. He was very knowledgeable, efficient and cost effective. During the repair process, he explained what he was doing along the way. He also used quality parts to complete the job and cleaned up after the work was done. I will definitely use his services for any future plumbing project and would highly recommend him.

The original job was to replace two bedroom faucets. Unexpected additional work was needed to replace a sink drain plug and a drain U bend. This included visit to hardware store to get U bend. Dan did the complete job in a smart and timely manner and left the work areas in clean condition. I recommend Dan highly for attitude and aptitude.

Had a clogged waste drain that caused a backup into a shower. Bernie Cogar responded within 5 min and was here shortly thereafter. He and his team correctly diagnosed my problem and checked to make sure there were no associated issues. It was a dirty job and they thoroughly cleaned up before they left. The price was also very fair. Cogar Plumbing is now on my "first call" list for the future.

I had a leaking toilet and broken water shut off valve. Once Tommy did the initial repairs, it become apparent this was one of those nuisance jobs where you fix one thing, another breaks. He stayed with it and was not satisfied until he had fixed all of the problems, even coming back out two additional times to my house.

I had a leak in my roof between the original roof and an addition that allow water to drain into my utility room through the sheet rock. I had attempted to solve the problem by applying a few layers of roofing cement. Greg came through and removed all of the roofing cement, locating the leak and repair the roof with new shingles and taking out all of the old sheet rock and replacing it with new materials. Then he repaired and painted the ceiling to make it blend in with the rest of the my home. I was more than satisfied with the results and at a very fair price.

Far more than what I would have expected from anyone. He even went to our rental house to fix the pipes there. This guy is amazing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
