Mike repaired water-damaged ceiling tiles in my basement. I could NOT be happier! Mike was PROMPT in the initial reply, MORE than willing to talk by phone, VERY easy to talk to, also willing to communicate by text (and did so VERY well) and CLEARLY understood what I was saying, VERY clear in what he needed me to know. The estimate he gave me was spot-on. He was prompt in every reply, prompt in his arrival, efficient and quick in his work. He'd said he thought he could complete the work in the same day, and did. He was happy to observe the HE LEFT **NO MESS.** Polite, personable, kind. I have already tentatively scheduled more work with him in the summer (floor vinyl tile replacement). I'd glad to know him, entirely happy with his work, and looking forward to working with him more.

Roger and Tom handled a remodel from an incident that caused flooding on my main floor and basement. The majority of work to some included laying laminate wood flooring and hanging drywall. The rest included framing closets and windows and some minor repairs. Overall, they done an outstanding job. It was not a situation where a "team" of workers came in to complete the project. Rather, they worked as a two man team to get the job done. After speaking with SEVERAL construction companies about the job, both large and small scale, I was encouraged by the honest approach in which Roger spoke about the project and what they could provide with the job. I took him at his word and they delivered. They priced the job fair and worked from 8:30 or 9am until dark each day. They were not the cheapest or most expensive quote, but both my spouse and I felt comfortable with them handling the work. Moreover, they were able to work within my timeframe and have my home back together prior to the holidays. Overall, a very positive and trustworthy experience from Roger and Tom. I would have them in my home again.

The Company had to redo a whole house: removing carpet, painting several rooms, installing laminate flooring, replacing bathroom fixtures and more. They were fast and did an amazing job. I would definitely hire them again for any jobs.

Tony, made a very bad experience much better. I contacted a local Hardwood flooring company to install 2000 square feet of very expensive unfinished walnut floors in my home. There are to many things that went wrong for me to list. However, I will share that the problems ranged from, substandard craftsmanship to stolen personal items. I was forced to find a new Hardwood flooring installer. Tony Tran, was highly recommended by a friend. Tony came over looked at the floors, and made several suggestions. He helped me understand what needed to be done to correct a number of issues. Because of my previously, bad and unfortunate experience, I was very guarded and more observant. Tony remained professional never once saying anything negative about the previous contractor. The floors took on a totally unique and much more professional look. I was very pleased. After the job was completed, there were a couple of small area's that needed to be touched up. I called Tony and his business partner, they came over right away and took care of it. It was at this point, that I made the decision to put hardwoods in area's of my home that was budgeted for carpet. Tony was worth the extra money that I spent. Again I would highly recommend Tony Tran and his business partner to others, needing Hardwood flooring in their homes. I would certainly use him for any of my future needs. Thanks!!

Adam Hale did a kitchen remodel for us. Work included removing cabinets, appliances and laminate flooring from the old kitchen and installing new cabinets (supplied by Woodmark Cabinets via Home Depot), appliances and new tile flooring and backsplash. His work was very good and he took great care to minimize dust and debris in the rest of the house. (My wife was VERY impressed and pleased with that!) He communicated well about the schedule and made it easy for us to plan accordingly. He is obviously very experienced and when confronted with the inevitable curve balls that come up on any project, he knew exactly what to do. We discovered our floor was sagging by almost 2” in one corner, and he handled it efficiently without any impact to the overall construction schedule. I can recommend his work without reservation. As a matter of fact, he is on the short list of contractors when we get ready to remodel our master bath!

I've known Burton for many years and this was the first project that I've hired him for, a bathroom remodel. I had a one bath house and he was able to make it into a bath and half resort. He also pointed out some work that needed to be done to insure the overall safety of the house such as adding and install new floor joists were there were none, gutting the existing plumbing and replacing due to advanced age, and also some questionable electric runs which were taken care of. Burton installed the travertine tile in both bathrooms and even did the shower tile to the ceiling. He was able to install the fixtures I had for the project with ease, such as the vanity and toilets. Burton was easy to work with on this project and took the questions and suggestions easily and gave great answers to the questions. This was the first project I've ever done for my house and Burton will be getting the next projects that will coming down the line. You will enjoy having Burton as your contractor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
