Travis Stevens did a great job removing my old toilet and installing a new low water one. Plus, I asked him if at the same time he could snake my slow running drain, and he did so without hesitation. Would highly recommend him for timeliness, quality and professionalism.

I am very happy for the price and service that Ron’s Plumbing Company has provided. Thank you Nate and Jose for your hard work, and thank you Ron for your clear communication! I must be honest that initially I was very skeptical, and was judging them because I had a previous bad experience with a small business. The few bad reviewers on Yelp and Thumbtack made me even more uncomfortable. I asked lots of questions, and Ron answered all of them patiently, without getting offended. He explained to me that many years ago, the company was bigger and some of the employees were not doing their jobs as they were supposed to, hence the bad reviews. Since a year ago, Ron has decided to size down the company because of his health. He only hires people that he trusts, and since then all reviews have been positive. Finally, it was the big discount that convinced me to give them a try. I had another company from Chesapeake coming over, quoting $1500 more than Ron’s company for the same project. That company is bigger with all the inspectors wearing professional uniforms, but I thought I should not pay that much money just for the uniforms. My previous bad experience was with T&C Maintenance. In April of 2015, I had a blockage of my laundry drain. It was through Thumbtack that I hired Tom from T&C Maintenance to fix the problem. Tom came 2-3 times, and finally was able to make the gray water run again with his mechanical snakes. He was very courteous and charged me less than $100. I left a great review for T&C Maintenance. However, just after 2 usages, the laundry drain became clogged again. Since my family was traveling out of the country in the summer, I did not contact Tom until August. Tom (the father of T&C) said the cast iron pipes may have become too old, and it was likely that the pipes were rusting from inside out. He offered a great price to replace ~25’ of pipes with PVC for $275. When I called T&C again for the project, it was the son Chris who picked up the phone. He looks exactly like Tom. He explained that Tom has decided not to do any crawlspace work because he has got prostate cancer. Instead of $275, he charged me $660 for the work, saying that materials alone would cost more than $300. Being a first time house owner with no idea what could be going on in the mysterious crawl space, I trusted him. Five months after, I started to smell something foul from the crawl. The bad odor comes and goes, so I did not pay too much attention until my termite inspector noticed me the problem in Late June. When I called T&C again, without knowing who I was Chris said he would come to my house the next day at 6:00 pm. When I texted him my address and explained that he was here last November, however, he never showed up. When I texted him more, he blocked me from his phone. I finally decided that I should venture to the crawl myself, so that I will not be fooled by dishonest people. What outraged me is that when I was there, I saw the cast iron pipes that T&C has replaced, my dryer vent cap that disappeared since T&C visited, a water bottle, and some random garbage. I did ask Chris to take out the replaced cast iron pipes, to which he responded it was not standard for plumbers to take them out, and there are a lot of other parts in the crawl. The truth is, I could find no other trash other than the ones I have mentioned above. If I could review T&C again, I will give it a big thumb down. Don’t get fooled by the innocent looking faces. When I first met Nate from Ron’s company, as I said, I was not trusting him very much. For one, his name never appeared on Thumbtack. For another, I thought he talked too much for Jose, who I was told speaks perfect English, has good reviews on Thumbtack, and was supposed to be the team leader. I was under the impression that Nate was taking advantage of him, with him doing the sweet talks to get my money, while Jose does the dirty job. I was wrong. They both worked very hard, and very often it was Nate who crawls under there to do the difficult jobs. Eventually they charged me $1100, which included installing an additional 10’ of PVC pipe (because apparently the entire length has become rusty, fragile or with holes), and cutting up and removing the cast iron pipes left by T&C. Nate took a lot of pictures to show what it was like in the crawl space after the work was done. He also showed me the holes on the cast iron pipes he has replaced. I also appreciate him giving me professional advices a few times. For example, I wanted to keep the replaced sand for my garden, but he said that sand is contaminated with the mold-killing chemicals and bad for plants. I would have never thought of that. I have full confidence that they have done a great job. I will hire them again in the future.

Had a washer outlet and drain moved out to the garage. He got to our place very promptly and got the whole job and more done in a very timely manner. Just requested a washer hookup and also gave me provisions to install a deep sink in the future and helped me out with the dryer vent for no extra charge. Will deffinately use him for my plumbing needs in the future.

I couldn't be more pleased. We thought we just needed a toilet repair and he discovered a total blockage in the drain line and identified the cause. Paul came within an hour of my call, resolved everything that could be done immediately, and advised me on what I should do for a long term solution. I am very grateful for the wonderful service.

Excellent service and response time. I called another company to clear a drain at my house in Virginia Beach. They showed up but did not have a "snake" in their truck long enough to clear the drain. Called A-1 who showed up at the scheduled time with the right equipment on their service truck.

We had two leaks from our tub, at the drain and the overflow. We also had a slow draining drain. Chris Baum answered my Thumbtack inquiry with an estimate from the information I provided on Thumbtack, the same day I made it. We set an appointment time for Chris to either come and look at the problem or repair it. Chris arrived on time and was very professional. Chris looked at the tub, evaluated the problem and as well as the fix and got right to work. Chris was very professional and in approximately one and a half hours, the job was completed, the area was neat and clean and most importantly, the problem was fixed. The job cost me a little more than Chris’s on line estimate, due to parts needed for the repair. We are very satisfied with Chris’s work.

I had a couple of slow drains and a washing machine drain line that was backing up and spilling over onto my floor. Mr. McKnight was prompt, friendly and did an excellent job for a reasonable price. I would use him again,

Raymond did work in my home last month (February 2014). I was very pleased and completely satisfied with the job. He and his assistant installed two toilets, repaired a water-damaged section of ceiling drywall, and replaced an old bathtub drain with a new stopper trim kit. His bill was the same as the verbal work estimates he quoted me on the phone and was very reasonable. I had called two other plumbers for quotes before choosing All-Day. I have referred him to a friend recently and plan to have them back do a flooring job in a spare bathroom next.

Mr. Middleton responded to my request for my electric water heater not being as hot as normal. At first Mr. Middleton gave me guidance over the phone for free (checked circuit breaker to see if tripped) to correct the problem but that wasn't the issue. Next, still over the phone,Mr. Middleton mentioned that only one of my elements went bad since I still had hot water. He suggested to get both elements replaced still he would already have the water heater open. He also added to purchase a water heater kit (about $28). This proved to be wise and cost effective suggestion. The kit saves about $20 or more in parts. Essentially I got two elements and two thermostats changed for only $50 which was the same quote he gave me on thumbtack. I gave him his price plus a tip. It took about 15mins to replace the parts. It took an hour in total due to draining of the water heater and refilling. I took the time to give such a lengthy review because Mr. Middleton deserves. Essentially I learned from his Character and discussion that he has a good heart and there are still good people in this world that provide an affordable service instead of taking advantage of people in price in order to fix their problem(s). Mr. Middleton is first point of contact on my list if any issues arise related to his areas of expertise.

The services that needed attention was the drain pain used for the washer in the garage. Everytime the kitchen sink or dish washer was used it caused that pipe to leak all over our belongings in the garage. Kevin took no time coming and gearing up to go under the house and fix the issue. After days of being unable to use or sink or dishwasher we were finally able to get everything worked out. Kevin was very organized and made sure everything was cleaned up after the job was done. There is nothing I would change about our experience. Job well done!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
