We hired RJA Floors to install two tile murals on the wall of Floris Elementary School as part of a school/PTA fundraiser. We needed the tiles to be handled very carefully because the tiles were all decorated by members of the school community (children, families, and staff), and we needed the installation to be completed within a short time so that the kids could enjoy seeing their installed tiles when they returned to school. Robert was wonderful to work with - he was responsive, provided a very fair estimate for the work, and completed the work on schedule, on budget and in a professional manner. He responded quickly to questions, made himself available to come to the school on three separate days to plan and complete the installation work, and was careful to install the tiles in the order requested. We'd highly recommend Robert and his team at RJA Floors in connection with any tile installation work.

I hired Matt to take out old tub liners and replace with tile. He reached out to me very quickly and began work a few days later. It ended up being a much bigger job as he had to remove moldy walls and hang new ones before tiling. Matt volunteered to work Sat and Sun to compete the job quickly in 2 1/2 days. He was always right on time in the morning and more than professional! Explained every step of the process to me and gave me a good price on the extra work. Super guy with many years experience in tiling. I would/will absolutely hire him again!

My wife and I hired Oscar to put up crown molding, add a new wall to divide a large room into two smaller rooms creating an office for me (adding the wall required moving electrical outlets and A/C ducts), adding a backslash in our kitchen which consisted of 4 different tiles in an intricate pattern, and removing a wall dividing two bedrooms on our third floor creating a suite for our daughter. Oscar showed up every morning at exactly 7:30 he was like a Swiss watch. He brought a team of guys each one specializing in something different. Each morning they laid down blankets on the stairs and hallways to protect the wood floors. Each night they would remove them and clean up. His guys worked all day without talking or goofing around. They were all like machines which was fantastic. They did the work quickly, it took 6 days from start to finish. On the last day Oscar had a cleaning crew come in and clean everything. Dust settled here and there such as the stair railing and baseboards. The cleaners scrubbed everything on their hands and knees. The house looked cleaner after Oscar left then when he started which my wife appreciated. My wife and I are extremely happy with the quality of work. The work performed has such good quality it looks like the changes were always part of the house. I love having an office now and my daughter really enjoys her new bigger bedroom. The kitchen has been transformed with the travertine tile and crown molding Oscar installed. The only advice I can give Oscar is to change the name of his company. I was hesitant to hire him because I thought he would only be good at drywall. "Oscar the master of drywall" does not give you a warm fuzzy when you are asking for intricate tile work to be done. But the truth is Oscar has a team of guys each one with their own specialty . Oscar runs a tight ship and each guy works hard and never goofs around.

John recently came to my house to inspect a tiling job and give me an estimate. He helped verify that I indeed had a plumbing issue instead of tile issue, and gave me a reference for a plumbing service. He was prompt, responsive and all around pleasant to interact with. I’ll be hiring John to help with my drywall needs after the plumber resolves my water leak.

Ricardo did a variety of interior projects at our home including installing lighting, dry wall repair, installing faucets and a pedestal sink, fixing a lock, and cleaning and caulking our bathroom tiles. Ricardo did a good job across the board for a fair price. He was always on time and trustworthy (he was given access to my home unattended with no issues). Ricardo was very clear about pricing "more work costs more money" which is fair. He even gave us a discount on our contract since a couple of projects could not be completed (not due to any issue on Ricardo's part). I highly recommend him for your interior home repair needs.

Yong and his crew were amazing. We replaced the cheap wood with large tile on the entire first level. The job included pulling up the wood which was glued down and installing the tile which had previously purchased. Yong responded to my request for an estimate on the same day came by to look at the job and provided an estimate well below others. The job actually became a lot more involved than expected but he kept to his original estimate and did a great job. We'd definitely use him again and recommend him for any of tile and backsplash needs!

Cory was a pleasure to work with on our bathroom tiling project. He did an excellent job and is very knowledgeable and hardworking. He was communicative and very friendly and went above and beyond (he cleaned up the mess from a separate project that other contractors had left, much to our surprise!). We plan to work with Cory on our next next project!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

      • Old standard or electric toothbrush
      • Stiff bristle brush
      • Spray bottle
      • White vinegar
      • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

      • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
        • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
